This was a great, raw out-of-the-soundboard performance. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I'm fed up with people bitching about details. From the first second, their little inquisitive eyes and ears were waiting for the smallest flaw. Is that appreciating music? Living it? The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

- Dude.....tell us how you really feel.
- But I must admit I agree with most of what you said to some extent. I loved the rendition of Clouds for the very reasons you mentioned above. I love when he changes songs a bit here and there, and what you said about Clouds sounding a tad fragile is exactly why I liked this live version, especially with Prince on keyboards....this was a nice change from the usual guitar god or piano solo intros. As far as Alan Leeds is concerned....I don´t know, I don´t think he´s wrong but he could´ve been a bit more diplomatic or maybe tried to reach out to him personally instead of posting stuff online. But I do think that Mr.Leeds has so much experience and wisdom, and so much history with Prince that what he says should be taken seriously. A bit of constructive criticism is not a bad thing. I think Prince does not really NEED help or advice, he´s good where he´s at but there seems to be this nagging feeling here in the fan community and even among his former associates that yes, he´s good, but things could be so much better because Prince still has so much untapped potential in him that he doesn´t utilize to the fullest. As far as I ´m concerned, I tend to see the good rather than the bad. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

LOL, then you do know there's no point in replicating improvisations, don't you? Jarrett would never be able to do that note-for-note even if you'd point a pistol at him.
Anyway, calm down and enjoy your Prince concert from last night as much as you want. I'm off to something else instead.

There are two types of critique that one generally sees. One that focuses on something falling outside a person's preferred genre or aesthetic, where the critique is "X doesn't sounds like my favorite song/performance/time-period" etc. And another that focuses on critiques of sound-quality, song-craft, musicianship etc. Only the latter are valid IMO. The former is more a statement about the listener than the artist creating it. The problem with the former is that humans always tend to think that their aesthetic is more universal than it ever really is. The problem with the latter is that the person giving those critiques has to know what the intended goal is of the person their critiquing so that it doesn't fall flat. Change it one more time..

It pains me to say I agree with Alan Leeds here: "File this appearance under trying to do too much and ending up not doing much at all." Go back and read Leeds' liner notes for The Hits. He kind of knows what he's talking about re: Prince's music. Just saying. . For a new Prince listener that was a lot to take in at once. We all already know the songs very well and could appreciate even the snippets. I still hope it helps sell some albums, though. . I'll take Prince anytime I can get him, but the performance did feel a bit rushed/forced to me. I understand it's a medley and maybe that comes with the territory in a live TV performance. We're lucky it was as good as it was, considering all the change ups, etc. I still enjoyed it, but would have preferred two full songs: One from AOA and one from PE. More specifically, "Way Back Home" with live strings and nice backing singers for the chorus. And "Another Love" in all its full rocking glory. . His performance of "Fury" on SNL had much more feeling and emotion. I think I stood up out of my chair at the end of it like I just watched my favorite team score a touchdown. I just didn't get that from this medley. Again, not being harsh...he had a lot on his plate. . Yeah and SNL sucks now. Too much politics and not enough good writing and players. "The password is what."

A thanks to bonatoc for his passionate write-up. It was what I needed, especially the "raw out of the soundboard" comment.
I was listening to clouds and my head was reeiling. "Bad mix? What's wrong with this?". So I did NOT like it.
But then... in this age of nothing but sound effects... "raw out of the soundboard" is unique. And I know enough about recording to know if it sounds THAT GOOD raw.... adding all the icing makes it... well in honesty it makes it good with icing on it.
I'd love to see ANY OTHER performer on SNL go out there and do the raw sound version. Many of their careers would end immediately. Somehow Lana Del Rey managed to get by her performance, but...

I wasn't all that blown away. The song choice was good but... Princes guitar wasn't plugged in when they went into PlectrumElectrum - which is fine - shit happens - but Prince didn't even seem to notice for about a minute.
All in it was enjoyable to see and nice to hear so many new songs played live. Perhaps it would have been more memorable had they just picked 2 songs and rocked out a bit more
