I love Prince's version of this. I listen to it and the original back to back. I have a harder time with his remake of "I Can't Make U Love Me" so I get what folks are saying. penguin

Not only do I love the Prince version, this has to be one of my favorite Prince songs since I don't know when...

I thought the same thing even before I knew it was a remake. I think Prince covered the song because it summed up his feelings about those who always complain no matter what he does. The end part especially. Could be that he just liked the song, heard it another way, and recorded it, but it just feels like more than that to me.

My remark was a joke...

But as with all great things from Prince, the final result can be interpreted in more ways than one.

I think when Alice Smith and Prince sing something like " I'm the greatest living soul you'll ever know", it's the writer's way to talk about the excruciating pain of the end of a love story.

It's the final, self-embarassing cry to persuade the other party to change her/his mind.

I won't go as far as thinking that Prince is so full of himself so to sing "I'm the greatest living soul you'll ever know" in a "My Name Is Prince" state of mind.

/ You do not have to ask permission to cover a song. He can pull that stuff on YouTube because it is being broadcast that being said many covers are horrible.

Yes, just imagine the piles of money Princey lost when some ne'er-do-well uploaded a 15 second Instagram of him singling When Doves Cry. Can't have such insubordination, right? What's next, men marrying horses?


It does not matter if it 15 seconds or 15 hours. He owns it he can do as he wishes. I am sure no one has a problem with Disney if they want something pulled down. I guess it would be better if he was in George Clinton.

I prefer the live performance of this on SNL than the album version, but stilll I'm not that particularly fond of it. It seemed he was happy & enjoyed playing it especially with Donna as he kept looking over at her during their performance, but I'm not really feeling it. I think it's a strong song, just not my cup of tea.
