At first I was tempted to agree - awful, awful, awful BUT then I thought if I heard this live and I were somewhere hot & sunny with a cocktail in hand and the sea lapping at my feet then I think I'd find it pretty cool biggrin

I actually usually like covers better when they totally reinvent a song that when they try to emulate the original. I'm not a reggae specialist but this makes a fine reggae tune with a life of its own as far as I'm concerned, I like it lol

So....after listening to the snippets of the album on itunes I actually think its pretty cool!

Some of the songs such as Darling Nikki and Lets Go Crazy sound really quite good. They have managed to get some respectable artists - Beverley Knight, Suggs, Ali Campbell etc... and have obviously thought about how to rework the songs to fit the genre. The only one that sounds appalling to me is Sinead O Connor doing 'I would die 4 u' - that really would take some getting used to.

She's got some nerve singing in a tribute album after all the shit she's spread on prince!

Sorry, Leann Rimes still hold the title of worst cover of this song. The Hollies version is a close second.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

To my ears this award should rather go to - and I am really sorry to say that, because I'm a big fan of her - Aretha Franklin's godawful Nothing Compares 2 U: https://www.youtube.com/w...ufH-jEh8r.

What a wasted opportunity! Remember what Jimmy Scott did to this song? --> https://www.youtube.com/w...EBwmQoduE.

Jimmy Scott made a great song even greater, and Aretha could have topped that. But along came Andre 3000.

Good news! You don't have to wait any longer!

The Beautiful Ones (you HAVE to listen at least to the spoken part at 1:36!)

Computer Blue live snippet (betcha never heard "Father's Song" on a trumpet!)

When Doves Cry live snippet

I thought you would have better taste Mr Bank. If somebody like The Mad Professor or Lee Scratch Perry covered it they might have still captured the mood. But Purple Rain (The Drinking Lilt On The Beach Version)??

Were being the operative word. I used to like skanking to their early stuff. One In Ten is a classic.

You liked Aretha's cover of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' as well! Come on man! lol

The Beautiful Ones is actually quite enjoyable (apart from the spoken part) IMO, especially the last 90 seconds. I could listen to this. Thanks for posting smile

It's a silly cover sure but I don't have a feeling it's taking itself too seriously so it's OK in my book, a bit like Age Of Chance's punk cover of Kiss, it totally betrayed the spirit of the original but it was just fun, nothing ethereal, so it's OK lol

The funny thing is that really there are so FEW covers of prince songs that I like. All the tribute albums I've heard so far were mostly disasters to my ears, same with a good 90% of the other random covers I've heard here and there. Those 2 have the merit of totally going in another direction by comparison to the original and I appreciate that. No I ain't gonna listen to them every day u know, I just gave 'em a shot outta curiosity and thought "yeah, cool" wink

Haha not sure if I love or hate that. If you took the tumpet alone... it sounds like it could have come off a 70s TV show.

Ironically, it seems like Purple Rain's the best of the bunch here (as well as that trombone solo in Computer Blue, which I rather liked). Something about this material just doesn't work well in a reggae context for me. Might've been better not to focus solely on PR and judiciously select songs from his whole catalogue. I could imagine an interesting version of, say, Thieves in the Temple (though I confess I'm struggling after that).

I've never found myself entertaining an urge to see Dennis Brown performing in heels and assless chaps, either, so I suppose it works both ways.

A real reggae artist would have done PR justice. Real reggae artists are big on Judgement Day etc.
This is not fit to describe as reggae. It is polished reggae-lite pop music. PR is not fun, it's deeper than that.

Yes, I suspect it's true that another artist could've done a better job. I just mean it's the best of a bad bunch, for me, as it's the only song in the set that remotely sounds like it has any business being turned into a reggae tune.

Are these guys on Warner Brothers? I just love their RR logo. This whole thing has a great "fuck you, we're gonna do it anyway" vibe about it. I used to LURVE Fun Lovin' Criminals.
