Breakfast Can Wait - better without the "duck voice"?

I love this song but man when the "duck voice" kicks in at the end I think it ruins it for me. I want to play this song for my friends but I am afraid of the WTF look I will get when it happens...

Who is with me? Can we start a petition to fix the song or something LOL? smile

BTW I know a lot of you love it so I am prepared for that - this is just a personal opinion and I am curious as to who shares it with me...

Yeah, I agree. I like it when he uses his falsetto, but then he drops down to tenor and from there Disco Duck on helium. So overall, I don't like the song because of all those disorienting lead vocal changes, but it is really really good before he goes all gimmicky with it.

Part of the joy/pleasure of most Prince songs is the WTF moment, and if your friends don't understand that as part of being a Prince fan then eff 'em, but, then, again, I like the "duck voice" so...

Yep, it is. I often switch the album version in my playlist with one of the remixes so I don't have to hear it.

^ I do the same. The buttermilk mix is cool.

When I heard that on the video I figured it was done to "tag" the video so that people ripping it would have that version. Was so dissapointed to hear it on the album version. It makes the song almost unlistenable. It sounds dumb and it come in really loud.

It is not a duck voice. It is the same voice you hear on Erotic City and a few Funkadelic songs. Some of you do not know your funk.

Out of interest, which Funkadelic songs would those be? I'm fairly sleepy and a tad inebriated, so I can't really remember any smile

At first I shook my head in that oh here we go expression, then accepted it then actually listened to what he's saying now I find it kind of cute.

I love it. It reminds of Lovesexy when he comes in with "Pretty little willow, you've got me drippin' all over the floor". Kinda unorthodox but that's what I love about Prince's music.

Couldn't have said it better myself.. If Prince did things the way the world would expect him to do it then I wouldnt NEVER ever have been a fan of his. He does entirely what he wants, even when it makes no sense and I applaud him for that.

.

As for BWC, after about 10 listens I've entirely grown used to the duck-voice. AOA is one of the first Prince albums in a long while that I don't feel compelled to skip anything.

Change it one more time..

I like the duck voice. The song is corny enough as it is, that last little touch just kind of fits to me.

At first I was like "WTF" but I never thought it didn't fit in the song. It didn't make me stop listening. I just got used to it. I would like to hear a version with his regular voice instead of the duck part though. The song is so old and played out to me that I rarely listen to it but I used to jam this joint all day long for a while.

I haven't liked the song since the first listen, the 'duck' voice has no bearing for me in liking the song anr more or any less. Boring and bland.

Duck voice? This is a straight rip off of Alvin and the Chipmunks. The camille voice was his creation, but this is simply copying somebody. Prince is the most innovative musician who ever lived, but he continues to copy others more and more...making him less of an original.

I like Breakfast, but the song does go down several notches once Alvin starts annoying. It's like the Auto Tune on U Know. Prince made a decent song, but is totally pandering to people under 30 who think Auto Tune is some miracle gift to sound.

Just like the stupid horn at the start of Art Official Cage...that sound effect totally played out in songs for young people, and here comes Prince...late with trend following again...

Nirvana made "hidden tracks" a fun but really dumb trend with their hidden track in 1991...Prince showed up late for that, and thinks it's some innovative thing. It actually just serves one purpose...it makes you have to learn to extract audio to make a cd with the hidden track not hidden.

I admit I dont like the chipmunk sound either and find it embaressing to play to someone (so I dont). It sounds immature to me and detracts from a song I like otherwise.

Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

Camille is a sped up voice used on songs like "Housequake." The voice on Breakfast is Alvin and the Chipmunks...NOT EVEN CLOSE to Camille.

Camille is not a sound. Its a character. Camille is not associated with Erotic City, Love or Money, Come On, PFunk etc etc.

Camille can be high (housequake) or low (Scarlett Pussy).

Something thae seems to have been lost in the sands of time.
