Come Under Rated?

Come is so under rated... Why?

Is it because it was his first album to not perform well on the charts?

As a whole it is a solid album, not a masterpiece, can't compare it to his 80's works... But this is a real under rated album imo.

Strong Tracks:

Come

Space

Pheremone

Solo

Letitgo

I think that in general the fans seem to have a fairly good opinion of it, but I do reckon that it doesn't get its fair dues, which is a shame. IMO, and I'm sure people will violently disagree with me in a second, it's a stronger album than TGE, feels like it's gunning for a more cohesive atmosphere and doesn't sound as dated to my ears.

Was thinking the same thing, that's why i said overall it's a solid album and your right it doesn't sound dated at all.

Let It Go and the Space remixes sound real good 20 years later... IMO as an album TGE sounds more dated than Come.

Come is the best of all the 90's albums save Graffiti Bridge, which is a close out of 80's tracks.

I think Come and The Truth are the only albums from the 90's that stood the test of time. Other than a track here or there, these are about the only two 90's albums I ever reach for.

...I do like Chaos and Disorder quite a bit too though.

I do like Come but I think Prince sabotaged it's success. Took away the rockin version of Come, Endorphinmachine, Strays of the World and replaced them with overlong remixed version of Come and dull Letigo.
Album could have been as killer as Gold but Prince wasn't going to let that happen.

Exactly

'Come' performed reasonably well in terms of chart positions.

I think "Papa" is one of his gems.

I like it. It's okay. It's nowhere near great, but there is some incredible writing buried undeneath those layers of drum loops.

Totally agree with you about Strays of the World. Should´ve been on the album because it was supposed to be the last song on the album and would´ve been a great closer to that album. It would´ve made the whole album a bit more cohesive than those split up moaning and whispering parts. Especially with those lyrics and the final word "Come!" at the end of the song.

.

I´m among the few fans who prefer the album version of the song come over any other alternative version but I can´t stand the melon eating/pussy licking sounds at the end of the song. Ruins the nice, stretched instrumental later half of the song.

-

I loved the Space maxi single, especially the Universal Love Remix...that maxi single probably could have been even greater than it already was if he had added the rock version of Space to it. That would´ve been a cool little EP.

.

It was funny how, in hindsight, Prince treated Come as the lesser of the two albums shortly before they came out even though it is not really worse than TGE. As far as I can say it has aged a bit better soundwise and it doesn´t have that NPG Operator inbetween songs.

Prince seemed to sabotage that album, playing songs from it during interviews and preferring TGE over it but most of the songs were interchangeable, i.e the configuration for both albums changed so often that I regard all those songs as part of some bigger concept at the time, with the TV special and first mentions of the internet and all.

Good times...chaotic but creative.

I completely agree, I think Come is much better than The Gold Experience (which is really overrated). I love dark moody Prince. When he sounds too polished he loses some of that grit which made him so ill.

I think there was a sense of frustration with Prince at the time, at least amongst the fans I associated with. Diamonds and Pearls had felt like a sell out. The Symbol album had been all over the place. The Hits collections were still kind of annoying. And then he dropped Come. I vividly remember picking it up for the first time and feeling horribly disappointed with the crappy vinyl packaging. On first play, it just sounded weak. I immediately hated it.

I think I, and maybe many other fans who had been following him since the eighties, needed some distance from the odd atmosphere of his mid-nineties period to be able to appreciate what a great album it actually is. It took me fifteen years. Looking back now, it's by far and away his best album of the nineties as far as I'm concerned.

Hang on, there's a rock version of Space? I never knew that, that's crazy. It's funny, I like to think I'm a pretty knowledgable fan, but the other day I only just heard about the Versace Experience II, and now apparently this escaped my attention. That's what I love about Prince, there's always more stuff to discover squirrelled away in a corner somewhere.

Michael Bland mentioned rehearsing it. He mentioned it here on the org. As far as I know, it is not in circulation and the time Michael Bland spoke about it is the only time I´ve ever heard about it to this day. He said specifically that it was a "rock" version and that it sounded nothing like all those released versions. Would love to hear that one day. I loved that big , bombastic sound of that incarnatino of the NPG. Big sound, tight band, probably his tightest ever. I miss Michael B, Sonny and Morris. I´d also love to hear the raw version of Strays of the World that Morris talked about....the version Prince recorded in Paris and then made Morris listen to and Morris loved it. It´s a great song in my opinion, profound lyrics and message, strong sound, but some here find it too bombastic and love to compare it to the cheesy Three Chains of Gold but I disagree.

Strays of the World would´ve fit perfectly on the Come album with its message about loneliness and coming to whatever, the light, the Dawn, I don´t know....but it should´ve been on that album like it was originally meant to be. It would´ve been a killer closing song.
