'Selfish performer'... yep, will never understand this attitude. Oh, no, poor people, having to hear music they've never heard before. Why is it people can only stand hearing music they've heard before when they go to see a 'pop' star?
I'd hate to see these people at a jazz gig.
I wish I had gotten to see Neil Young when he just performed the new album on the Greendale tour. Would have been fantastic.
Why can't we treat these things as an experience, one that we've paid to have? It's the same mentality as those who have to video the gig on their phones, have to take pictures, have to hear the songs they want, dammit, cos it's their special show and they paid for it dammit!
It's the fans who have the temper tamtrums, not the performers who decide to do something interesting with their show, rather than churning out the same old stuff.

TGE is not a great album but it has great singles, it's what makes Prince , well Prince? the weird stuff mixed with the Mainstream, RAP, ROCK, SOUL, FUNK, Electronic, Blues, POP, Jazz, Country, Gospel a blend of styles no other artist alive could do...the haven't got his voice/range and music mojo and then put it on one album ? Crazy but he does it better than anyone -
Shy to Endorphinmachine - who does that? is he rapping or is it hip-hop or ryhme or rock, singing or pop, latin styles, the layers are crazy!! vocal choir ...church
Prince is to big an artist to fit on a single CD, He starts with Pussy Control (Snoop Dog hooks - Beyonce using hooks - Samples - 80's electronic) and ends with Gold (Church - echo, Gospel, - Rock 80's Guitar solo in the middle, harp sound, na-na 60's beatles like chants, hymns - then a rap )?
who does that?

I'm from the Twin Cities so I've always had a soft spot for Rock n Roll is Alive and It Lives in Minneapolis. I first heard Pussy Control at an all-night party my high school threw for graduating seniors, shortly after TGE came out. I had no idea who it was. I grew up loving Prince, but this shit was so out there it blew my mind. A few months later I was staying overnight at a girl's house when I saw a poster for TGE on her brother's wall. It was a poster about how the album was all legendary and shit. It intrigued the hell out of me. I didn't buy TGE until about a year later, when I raided Columbia House for 12 CDs for $10 or whatever the fuck it was. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Billy gold and pussy are the only noteworthy tracks. Prince got carried away with the most beautiful new album mix so I'll leave it off. I prefer the bell records version.

It always felt like Diamonds & Pearls part II. Good batch of songs, but nothing terribly profound. Everything is on the surface, meaning it's missing the "huh?" factor, for better or worse. It was a disappointment to think that it was what he considered freedom--something reaffirmed upon Emancipation's release My Legacy

. This one is one of the best shows: http://www.princevault.co...t,_1995-am . Fantastic version of "Days Of Wild", and then he does "In Time". Magnificent. © Bart Van Hemelen

I've tried to look at TGE from a distance, to evaluate the quality of the songs etc., but I can't. That record is just too much tied in to that period when Prince started to feel exciting again after years of bland commercialism and other disappointments. . I still recall hearing that new music back in early 1994 when he had sent a DAT to European radio stations. There was this spark of freshness, of self-belief, that had been lacking for so long. . TGE isn't a classic, in part because it lacks "Days Of Wild". It's a gorram shame that track was removed and instead we got "We March", a horrible track that sounds like it belongs on Emancipation. TGE was also released far too late, it has those cheesy segues, it is too loud, some tracks have superior versions to the album versions,... So much potential for a far superior album. . And yet I still think it is the last time we really saw Prince. That whole era has given me so much music (released and unreleased) that I cannot dislike. I find it almost incredible that he was already working on the dire Emancipation in 1995. © Bart Van Hemelen

the gold experience overrated ?...no...not for me...if anything...its underated...prince was having another creative peak similar to the mid 80s while he was making this album...he was bursting with ideas..i agree the album we eventually got isn't perfect but it could have been a classic prince album.. . as bart has already mentioned some of them..days of wild and interactive should have been on the album..i would have binned we march and pussy control...the album is too loud (for whatever reason)..should have been the original version of the amazing endorphin machine instead of the cowbell version we got.. . prince was on fire when he was making this album...if it had been released properly..it would be up there with his great albums... . shhh endorphin machine days of wild dolphin shy i hate u gold
all brilliant prince songs ...overrated..no..i think its underrated if anything. [Edited 10/24/14 2:53am]

I don't think that's on Open Sessions, though it's been a while since I listened to it. Did that show ever leak out in a widespread way? (Note to mods: I'm not asking where to find it.) I find it almost incredible that he was already working on the dire Emancipation in 1995. I rarely listen to the released TGE. I love the hell out of the raw, unreleased versions of Gold, Endorphinemachine, and others. Plus, I need to add Dsys of Wild and Interactive. This music has an edge. Prince had vitality, oomph, something to say. He's never been that good again. I started a thread last week about how I think the early single-disc configuration of Emancipation is the missing link between TGE Prince and Emancipation and the later plastic crap. It's jarring to think he went from TGE (and C&D) straight to recording shit like We Gets Up and Mr. Happy. But to my ears, the early Emancipation sounds like the natural evolution. Slave 2 the System is closer to TGE; Feel Good is closer to the released Emancipation. And so on. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I often wonder how good Emancipation could have been if he stuck with the band/sound/production of 93-95. I think there's a lot of good songs on it but they suffer with the plastic RNB lite Kirky J production. The difference in Saviour - which has that classic NPG 95 sound compared to the likes of Emancipation (the track) which sounds awful, is like night and day. [Edited 10/24/14 3:44am]

TGE is my favourite album/era. He was 100% into what he was doing, had a vision, a concept, was angry but at the same time full of euphoria, which greatly affected his song-writing, singing, lyrical delivery and guitar-playing. Apart from that, he had the best, tightest band ever at the time.

The tour at that time was among the best for me. I went to pretty much every UK gig and there was always something different thrown in. B-sides and rarities.

SquirrelMeat said: Not overrated in the slightest. A real productive period, with this the best album of the bunch. Its dated as good or bad as 1999. Always surprised that people would replace We March with anything other than Lovesign! Still a Nona/Prince duet, but RnB, commercial & a better fit for the album. Prince removed Interactive because it didn't hold up against EndorphineMachine (watch him perform them back-to-back on VH1 awards to see what I mean) and he removed Days of Wild because of the negative feedback from the music press at listening sessions. Days of Wild is a big favorite of mine, but I don't think it works on that album, whether it's the live version or the studio version. I know that sounds odd when you have tracks like Pussy Control, Now & Billy Jack Bitch on there... "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

^ A agree about Days of Wild TGE doesn't suffer because it wasn't included. The studio track is dull when compared to the live performances.
