Honestly, for me, if you replace "Free" with "Moonbeam Levels" and add on "Extra Loveable", you've got what's probably his greatest album ever.

All Day, All Night (no idea where you got "up" from), the released version of Irresistible Bitch and Electric Intercourse are all from after 1999 was released, so it would be impossible for them to be on it.

Moonbeam Levels and Extraloveable would have been nice additions though.

I'm not so crazy about "Free" as it is, but i still don't now and never have understood all the hype over "Moonbeam Levels."

Let's see what we have here from that specific era...

Moonbeam Levels

Extra Loveable

Irresistible Bitch
How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore

Just add 4-6 unreleased tracks from that same era, almost anything, and you'd still get a pretty strong companion album to "1999" based on how strong just those 4 songs listed are.

To me, 1999 is a time machine.
I loved the 80s sound, and 1999

is the perfect capsule into that

period. A perfect mix of different

styles including new-wave.

The only song I dislike is

International Lover (yes, I like Free).

1999 sounds dated, but in a good way.

1999 is sacred and shouldn't be touched.

I still possess that initial cd that didn't have enough space for DMSR, it's an unholy thing to have in one's home.

Masterpiece album. But I could deal with a remastered reissue with the mentioned unreleased tracks added to it. I'm also a fan of Free, too.

.

1999 is perfect as is, as far as I'm concerned. But if they could have added "Extraloveable" to the album it would have been just exquisite.

.

If I had been WB back then--in full consultation with Prince and with his consent, of course--I would have made sure that song got on the album or at least on a B-side of a single. If time constraints were an issue, I'd have recommended editing "Lady Cab Driver" down to 3 minutes, and adding "Extraloveable" to the beginning of the B-side of of the second record with the track edited down to about the 4-minute mark. Then I would have proposed releasing "Automatic" as a single as follow-up to "Delerious", with the full version of "Extraloveable" as the B-side with some very minor editing to the lyrics in the latter half of the song. Both songs I think would have been well received and "Extraloveable" could have been a massive underground hit like "Erotic City" was in '84. (WB really dropped the ball on releasing "Automatic". That was a missed opportunity for everyone.) And the full version of LCD might have been able fit onto the 12" version of an "Automatic" single.

.

Love all the unreleased material from this era but the original version of "Extraloveable" is to die for. Despite the fact Prince wrote it with Vanity 6 in mind to record it, the song flows perfectly with the sound of 1999, making it a natural fit if it had been added to the album.

.

Now that I've got that off my chest...as far as a contemporary, digitally remastered 'Deluxe' cd of 1999 goes, IMO the more unreleased material you include on it the merrier. cool

If time constraints would have been an issue, they could have shortened "Lady Cab Driver" and added the song, and kept the full version of LCD to use as a B-side if they had released other singles. I really think they could have gotten away with releasing "Automatic" and it would have done very well on the heels of "Delirious" or "1999". (WB really dropped the ball on that one.) Or they could have released "Automatic" as a single with "Extraloveable" on the B-side.

.

1999 is a classic masterpiece - which places it beyond any second guessing after 30+ years. It is the album that launch Prince's career into stratosphere because it showed how prolific and unique he was over 2 fantastic discs during the dawn of the MTV era. Suddenly he had a whole lot more white fans which means this album crossed him over. B-sides served a purpose back then - you had to hunt down the 1999 single to hear a masterpeice like How Come U Dont Call Me Anymore? That tune is the stand out favorite that it is today because it WAS NOT on the 1999 album.

For some reason, the only 2 albums I can never bring myself to tinkering with are 1999 and Purple Rain... all of the others are re-made into customized 'era' playlists with over 15 tracks, but the two above albums I can never change. I usually just create a new 'album' with 1999 outtakes and such.

So no. IMO, 1999 was perfect the way it was released. Regardless of how much I love 'Purple Music' biggrin

I've often wondered if "Purple Music" should have been on the album instead of "All The Critics..."

I love both songs! lol

Prince won't do anything like that until he has a hit record again, I know it.

You should all go out there and buy 5 copies of AOA so that eventually we get that 1999 boxset. Do it, I know it's the only way.

You took away most of my favourites! I actually think Automatic onwards is stronger than the first half of the album... but it is a perfect album as it is.

Extraloveable

Moonbeam Levels

Lust U Always

Purple Music

Baby, You're a Trip

Turn It Up

Irresistible Bitch (original)

The outtakes from this time are incredible. There's probably more just as good that we haven't heard like 'Yah, U Know', 'Moral Majority', 'Vagina', or ones that we haven't even heard of. There should be an outtake album from this era.

I find these kinds of threads silly. The record is what it is. If u want it different, make your playlist and move on. Whats with trying to convince past-prince to change his past-mind into making something he elected not to make....just make your playlist and be done.
