I will give Prince this much credit: He never did commercials.

While many celebrities do commercials on teevee, Prince has never fell for that. He has also never had one of his songs on a commercial. That's good.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Wasn't the track titled "wow", not the same as the opener on the PE album, intended for a cola (coke or pepsi) commercial?

Commercials with P would be hilarious. Imagine him selling a set of kitchen knives in an absurd television studio setting. I'd put that ish on repeat and listen to NewPowerSoul over it until the neighbors call an ambulance.

It can be great exposure these days. Primarily the trendy Apple adverts which have catapulted some bands and made internationals with the likes of Frans Ferdinand and New Young Pony Club. I discover new bands all the time by using shazam during TV commercials.

Somewhere here on earth is a great track. If Versace or Channel wanted to use it in a commercial why not have your song on TV every hour during prime time? Everyone has seen the fit lass in the speedboat? It's not much different to the NFL using it. Other than his needing to be brand aware.

And didn't he actually write a jingle for Ray Charles for a Pepsi ad?

That could have been cool. How close did this come to happening? I think I'd read somewhere that the unreleased Uh-Huh was also intended to have some association with coke?

There was also a rumour (which I think turned out to be nothing more than that) about Prince having penned "It's always the real thing" for Coke, after MJ had been involved with Pepsi.

Uh Huh was written by someone else, for Ray Charles, for the Diet Pepsi commercial. Prince just liked it and did an unreleased cover.

The hidden commercial on Rave Un2 is pretty fucked up. I can't think of another artist who has put a commercial right on their album. Especially when that same album complains about the commercialization of music bringing the music down.

There was a commercial for Crystal Ball album that featured the song Crystal Ball, does that count? lol

Prince's recording of this track has often led to the mistaken belief that Prince wrote the jingle used in the commercials; in fact it was written by Diet Pepsi creative director Alfred Merrin and jingle writer Peter Cofield, who tried to tailor the catchphrase "the right one" to Ray Charles' delivery and consequently added "baby." Charles' backing singers The Raelettes then added "Uh-huh!" after playing around with other two-syllably alternatives, such as "doo-woo".

I seem to recall a TV commercial for the Lotus Flower CD. More of a Target commercial for the CD if I recall correctly.

Sorry, I mixed up "wow" with "uh huh". The latter was apparently intended for the commercial (although that's now been refuted in one of the posts above).

Supposedly, Prince wrote his "Uh Huh" song inspired by and using the Pepsi song backup chorus as a sample. He didn't originate the idea. He expanded it.

THat is something Target made - not Prince. THey had the exclusive rights to do so since they were the exclusive brick and mortar retailer of the album. I think the origingal intention of the thread is Prince actually making specific content for a commercial to sell a product or service that is not his.
