This is hilarious, but would be grating if you were a band member as Prince sounds irritated a bit here. Strangest of all is how he can change from barking at band members ionto some of his most sublime singing ever.

I think Prince is instructing Mark to use a new piece of equipment he's gotten for him. It sounds like a filter pedal for his bass. Prince has used filtered bass guitar sounds in his music very rarely and it sounds like Mark is using the item in question for the first time. It's "sensitive to touch" because the unit is either a rocking pedal design or the amount of filtering the unit provides depends on how hard you hit the strings on the bass guitar.

You can hear how the bass sound changes after Prince tells him to "put it on".

From these posts, Prince sounds like he was (maybe still is) a horror to work for and with! Some have always asked me "why do I love Prince?"...stating that he is a complete asshole, and now I know why. Reading these things make me question that now myself. It's no wonder that the man never made lasting friendships or relationships. To be honest, I wouldn't have wanted to be around him myself, being a person such as that.

Well, here's the good news: if you don't know him personally, you don't have to be around him and you can still enjoy the music, which would never have been that great if he'd been an ordinary guy. Ever since Ike Turner, Chuck Berry and the one and only Mr. Jaaaaames Brown, who taught Prince everything he knew about how to drill your band like the marines... Rock & Roll was never made by nice guys. And let's not forget, most if not all of these stories are hearsay. [Edited 10/13/14 11:28am] [Edited 10/13/14 11:30am] [Edited 10/13/14 11:31am]

Oh yeah, and Bobby's quite likely doing stage mixing while playing the drums, as drummers often do. They often have a mixer placed right next to the drum kit. There's a different set of speaks on stage for the band for monitoring than there is for the audience - the mix for the stage is sometimes done by the band members if they prefer to do it themselves. In this case it seems that Bobby is doing the mixing for the rehearsal. Prince is just instructing Bobby to make the electric piano louder in the mix (it's Prince playing the piano). Prince also asks him if Bobby was able to see his cues last night.

They most likely haven't switched instruments or anything like that. The reference to the "bass on the organ" simply means that the organ parts are supposed to just play the bass notes during that section (it's either Fink or Lisa doing them). Nothing out of the ordinary about that.

In short,

During the "Screams of Passion" rehearsal (on the "Feline" bootleg) Prince is
- instructing Mark on how to use a new effect unit with his bass guitar.

- telling Bobby to make the piano louder in the mix, as Bobby is the one doing the mixing on stage during the rehearsal.
- nothing strange is going on with the guitar parts or the organ parts either.

Well its nothing new, hi bollocking his members. He is a superstar and has a superstar ego that goes with it. I guess he was more careful to make sure his bullying of employees stayed off the tape though. There are numerous tales of him being a hard taskmaster especially from Controversy onwards.

.

When he got Big Chick in late 1981 early 1982, that was when he separated himself from the band more, ate privately only occasionally inviting the band up and tours from Triple Threat onwards saw Prince on a bus separate from the Revolution, Time and Vanity 6. All the tales of Prince selecting either Susan, Jill, Vanity etc to sleep with him become commonplace and this happens at least up to the D and P period with Mayte happy when Prince got her way from the meatheads (The game Boyz) on the NPG bus. Rosie also mentioned the same clowns giving her grief over her size.

.

He probably also had less time for wendynlisa from late 1985 onwards when he started hanging with his "boyz" as Wendy puts it, they were bodyguards and treated women like dirt, they could not even do the simplistic steps Prince gave them.

.

Brown Mark mentions getting humiliated on stage by Prince and being begged to stay. Prince was known to be very hard on this young man viewed as competition with the ladies. He knew after having Andre in the bass shoes, his next player better lay back and do his job more and stop trying to be a star.

.

And the report of Matt Fink being humiliated in 1990 on stage saying that Prince hid him behind the drums and singers and that "He should be locked in a case". Missing the "Rock in Rio II" gigs after being given no notice, he was booted out for Tommy Elm.

.

Overall Prince's bullying meant that the stronger personalities and his peers (In some cases marginally older bandmates) of the early Revolution and pre Revolution bands (1978 -1981) gave way to docile members who played the groove more and merely let Prince do the creating. By 2000 Prince was turning over members regularly, putting members on and off tour and now hires a lot of people who play for him part time (Hannah, Delilah, John Blackwell, Maceo etc). Now he loves playing with people 20 - 30 years his junior, whom he pretty much has total control over.

.

Like most mercurial geniuses, Prince is a complete control freak and loves to be in control. He likes to create and manage the music. To him a good band members should listen to him, play the music he makes and well and put a personal touch on their playing when permitted and shine only when Prince throws a spotlight. Why do you think he dates young women with IQ between 65 and 90 all the time. Any brighter women did not last (Susannah had a much higher IQ than him). Why are his groups and proteges likely to be 17 - 25 year old women with cute asses, big breasts, mini talents and micro brains?

Simple word - domination. It was obvious Prince was enamoured with Both Wendy and Lisa when they first joined, but his interest cooled as Wendy and Lisa got tighter and matured together challenging Prince.

.

As for friends, I would say probably other black men like himself, namely Musicians independent of Prince's control and his buddies through his career. I guess that's one of his big mistakes, was this obsession with close friends joining his bands and being let in with less talent at times (Greg, Wally, Jerome, Tony, etc) or familial bonds (Andre, Duane as bodyguard and manager) and friends he has made like Gilbert and Levi who were awesome bodyguards/musicians but terrible business managers. I think he mixes easier with black males and this latest friendship with Joshua Welton the producer proves it (He is young and hip and thus possibly easy to control).

.

I suspect too that Prince is slightly wary of white men, as the ones he has had working for him, he has aleways been a bit distant or wary of. I mean how many white men has he had anything other than a boss or respect older figure relationship with? None, either he bossed them about like Matt Fink, Tommy, Renato etc. or he kissed their asses like the bosses at WB.

.

His approach to white and Mexican women though is better as he sees them as easy to control, of course if they are intelligent or older he loses interest. Prince's interaction with black women is as strained as white men, a few have played with him but he has not really befriended many unless they were quite young or gentler looking (Shelby, Susan Moonsie). I feel that Rosie, Boni and Cat probably intimidated him a bit as they were older and more intelligent. I feel he respected them more, as they may have reminded him of his Mum (Look at his relationship with Mavis Staples). But generally he has always fancied Mixed race/White and Hispanic women sexually.

So in all Prince has a professional rather than a social relationship with most of his band members. There are exceptions like his girlfriends (Only Manny was not involved some way in his musical empire, but she was a secretary I think). In the 80s he tried to be more social, but apart from occasional sexing of the attractive females (Andy, Hannah possibly), he sees them only as players.

.

Thats how a musician should work, Prince spent years paying his dues and he has a clear musical philosophy of how he wants his empire to run. To him a band member is paid money to do work for him, he does not want to pay for friends. Music to him is his only friend. I guess that is it. I think he is socially niave too and thinks its okay to treat his bandmembers and fans like shit, but that is Prince land I think.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

He's a complete control freak who can't see far beyond his music and craft. I don't think he stuggles socially though. Everyone says he's very funny, constanly making jokes and trying to impress.

Any woman who comes into his life has to understand that they are second to his music, no excpetions. I have no idea why he has always shuffled not only his bands but entire friendship circles. He must be very sad, and very lonely. Who does he sit with in Paisely Park every day? sad Donna and Hannah both have partners and their own houses.

And what a bunch of gratuitous racist and sexist remarks.

Leadership in a band is seldom gentle, even in your local smalltown band. He's a perfectionist, that's for sure, and he's demanding from others the self-discipline and total commitment he applied from the very start to himself.

He stated several times that he feels more comfortable working with people he knows, and this worked for better and for worse.

I wouldn't be too judgemental on this. The fact that he prefers working with long-time friends is pretty rare in the industry, where usually A&R choose the usual bunch of musicians when it comes to superstars : Paulinho Da Costa, Jeff Porcaro, Manu Katche, etc.

As someone who tries to reinvent himself constantly, he has to part from collaborators to keep the challenge going on. I am not sure that this makes him happy, and it sure does not make ex-band members happy. But that's the way he is: trying to pack as much experiences he can in one career/life. It seems the only way for him to honor the talent he's been blessed with.

Alex Hahn written Book(Rise & Fall of Prince) where he was saying that at a Rehearsal Prince was telling Miko to turn down his guitar. Well I guess Miko didn't turn it down enough because then Prince got really close to the Mic & yelled "..Turn down your Mother Fuckin Guitar!!!!". So Miko said "hey man..you ain't gonna talk to me like that..". Prince said "Wanna take it outside??..". Then Miko said "..OH yea, you & your security".

[Edited 10/13/14 18:50pm]

This is interesting some of it may be true and other bits are just a reach. There are claims about Prince's intelligence made here that can't be substantiated in any way. You don't know what Prince's IQ is or what it is compared to anyone else on this planet and certainly not Susannah or any member of the revolution.

The claim that Prince was somehow not trusting of white men is absurd because Prince had every opportuntiy to place familiar black men in charge of his career from the beginning but allowed David Z, Owen Husney, to guide his career over Andre's mom and Pepe Willie. Why would he do

that if he's more confortable around black men and familiarity? Cavallo, Ruffalo, Fargnoi, all white men that he trusted his career to and Purple Rain to. Alan Leeds anyone? a white man, who has the longest tenure of any unfortuante soul to run any aspect of Prince's business.

Race had little to nothing to do with Prince's business choices as Prnce was more concerned about what each man could bring to the table and what skill Prince was lacking that he could assimilate from them. He did not want to be considered a black artist and even lied about his mother being white when in fact she is black.

The question of Prince "blackening" himself is because of the Wendy and Lisa fans who think Prince was better then and believe Wendy and Lisa were fired because Prince wanted to be 'blacker' and connect with his more RnB base listeners. Guess what the ony person that can answer that is Prince himself. I just find it interesting that Prince's white fans actually and scornfully resent the break up of the revolution and explain it by saying Prince wanted to be black which is why he fired two white girls. Labeling the three black men as dancers who had no talent and were womanizers and pigs is quite the stereotype. While also ignoring the stories that Wendy and Lisa loudly stated on several occaisons that the revolution isn't the same with all these niggers in the band! That statement is a story I have heard and read but not substantiated or proven, just like your claims that these men were doing anything other than being men around hot women. Why do these black men have to be talentless, disgusting, womanizers? It is an interesting claim because Greg Safford for one was always around and the entire crew knew Wendy and Lisa were an item. If you tell one story tell both sides.

The need to 'blacken' the revolution was most likely because although Prince railed aginst being typecast as a black artist, he was also the producer of the funkiest black music on the planet. The Time was his avenue to explore that but when the Time was over and finished, Prince was being lauded for fusing Rock and funk and RnB. It probaly dawned on Prince that he no longer had to be ambiguously black but he could do it all through one band and one sound. There was no more time available to produce an Rnb act as Jaime Starr. What was left on the Time was going to be the Family, avenue for St. Paul his girlfriend Susannah to explore her writing talents. Mind you, Susannah was not having her door knocked down by record labels prior to meeting Prince. She was a session singer at best and yet somehow she was 'the brains.' How one could come to that conclusion is beyond me.

Lets also point out that Alan Leeds put together the plans for Paisley Park, handled the tour, Prince's personal business, and the band. Coming from working with James Brown, Alan was not controlled in any way shape or form and Alan often speaks of Prince's intellectual ability as being far advanced.

One thing in your statement that I need to address for any white person or anyone in relation to Prince himself. He's doesn't feel comfortable around any particualr race or creed or person for that matter. This is a deeply falwed man emotionally that is supremely talented. Prince doesn't expect anyone to be around for a long time and when they are he gets rid of them anyway. Prince doesn't do it because he's a scum bucket, he does it because he learned to be that way. People with Prince's life experience and socio-economic background grow up to be criminals and yet he's probably the most talented musician of our lifetime. He should be studied and he would be if he ever told the truth but I undrstand why he lies, it's because if he was ever vulnerable again and needed someone, he would expect the same treatment he knows. Which is probaly why he got rid of Wendy and Lisa. They became his best friends and confidants and he began to need them and trust them and his defense kicked in and he got rid of them. It more than likely was never about music or ability or if they were getting 'better' than him or he was threatened by them.

Everytime we criticize this man we forget that he's human and all his mistakes and success comes that humanity. Don't place your own racial biases on Prince to try and explain actions that only he knows the reasons behind. Factually, if Prince did get rid of Wendy and Lisa to be more black then why isn't Lovesexy an RnB record? Why was Sign of the Times not stripped of all rock songs? Why did he embark on the side project Madhouse that was all Jazz and had nothing to do with black listeners? Why was he still playing POP music? Why did he do the Black Album to actually parody black rap music? Where is the proof in the music or in the presentation? How could Prince be intimidated by black women and yet hire them to be in his band? These claims make zero logical sense and yet they have lived on in the prince fan lore for decades.

To the post above maybe (I won't repost it as I found the blob of text very hard going), maybe you would like to insert a line break every 4 or 5 lines.

.

I said those things as you rightly said, its Prince fan lore, and nearly every Prince book I buy or read says the same thing, he loves hanging with the brothaz in the group, hates or distrusts white men (Except in the beginning of his career, when he used several Jewish men to enhance his career).

And that he also loves young white and mixed race/Hispanic women over black headstrong ones. I agree he has one point in his favour, most of his musical choices in band members came out of ability, but at the beginning he was going around stating he wanted a mixed band of men, women, black and white because of his obsession with Sly and the Family Stone. Later on however he cared less about this, and the NPG and later bands have been mostly black with the token white person or woman. Only 3rd eye girl seems to be a mostly white band.

.

Yes I am obsessed with IQ, as I still believe in it and think it is a very valid measure of humanity and the truth of the matter is, none of his girlfriends apart from Susannah and possibly Susan Moonsie, came across as very bright or erudite in the interviews on TV or elesewhere. Plus he liked immature women, often cavorting with women aged between 18 and 25 and when they stopped being young girls and became women Prince greew tired of them (The tale told in an earlier post was probably a slightly older woman with a bit more maturity that pissed off Prince). And then theres the story of a bored Anna Garcia being encouraged to play drums in her spare time waiting for Prince in the studio, once she sounded any good, Prince stopped that. The fact he saw multiple women at once many times, also shows what little respect he had for most of them.

.

Plus saying that Wendy and Lisa talked about too many niggxxs in the band, thats plain nonsense. I doubt they were ever racist. They maybe resented these people for their lack of talent, the way they treated women and the spotlight Prince was giving them. But I doubt it was because they were Black, I mean Prince was Black and so was Mark and Dez, if they hated black people so much they would never have agreed to be in a band playing mostly funk music led by a Black man (No matter how light skinned he was). Where did you even get this idea from.

.

Plus the bit about changing the genes of his parents was also deliberate. Prince hated interviewers, and wanted people to assess him on his music, not his race. He considered questions about his and his family's racial origin unimportant, and thus saw nothing wrong in offering baffling and erroneous answers. Most of tehse interviews date from the Dirty Mind Period, before Prince stopped doing many interviews and only gave occasional ones. John and Mattie were at various times, Black, Italian, Cherokee, Filipino, Creole, Mulatto and nearly any other racial combination of these. Both were clearly Black but like most Louisiana people, no doubt had a significant amount of white blood from slavery days caused by evil masters raping Black slave women or whores and then the mixed race children being forced to live and register as black as racial laws made even a person with 99% white ancestry a negro in their eyes.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

"Small Club" is referenced - during "Still would stand all time" "Who's the fool singing will!? its WOULD"

I always assumed he was adressing some people in the audience, not a bandmember, I may be wrong, though.

There's definitely a backing singer who's getting it wrong.

You missed the point and clearly didn't read the entire comment. I have never read a single comment about Prince hating the white people in his bands or white people in general. Not once. As far as him loving hanging with the 'brothaz' as you weirdly put it, specific to the revolution era, Wally and crew were already hanging with Prince and crew prior to Prince putting them in the band. Prince hung out with them because they were funny and talked to girls not specifically because they were black. The comment Wendy made about too many niggas in the band is a rumor that is unsubstantiated just like any book that speculates on Prince's motives for firing Wendy and Lisa or hanging out with black people(which you seem to equate as being part of his downfall, strange to say the least). There is no accurate way to determine any facts surrounding Prince because A. He lies and B. former members of his entourage either won't say outright or make blatantly absurd statements to hurt him. Prince not dating black women is also incorrect as they just weren't reported on or talked about as openly as his latina and white conquests. The point is we start fucking up when fans make assumptions without any facts. Assumptions change when challenged like when you say Prince was intimidated by black women when he hired black women and was known to be fucking Cat who is black. You say he wanted to hang out with the 'brothas' but seemingly had in depth personal relationships with Alan Leeds, Wendy and Lisa and Bobby Z.
