Be Honest Now.....

Now that we are bombarded with threads (as predicted) that AOA and PE arent the sellers we thought , what did U, yes U actually think it was going to sell? And how did you honestly believe this was going to happen, very curious to hear.

I for no knew this is where it was gonna be, the first few singles got NO attention at all, no videos, not much play so I knew that obviously since he hasnt had a HIT SINGLE in 21 years "breakdown" and "Breakfast Can Wait" were not going to be the ones to break that streak. Lets be real he seemed to be doing more for "Rock N Roll love affair" and to be honest that was a better song too. But even if that was the "kick off" and that had a video and he did a few tv shows for it, i never thought AOA was gonna sell anything close to 100,000 and if it did that would be huge! for him at this point.

So what did you think it would sell?

it sold 50k (US) in the first week, so we can guess it will go Gold in a few weeks?

I think that is amazing, also PE will go 50k in a few weeks.

so it did well in this brand new age, when life's a stage.

I honestly don't worry about sales with Prince at this point. Just quality music. I mean it would be nice to see big numbers, but when such bad acts are topping the charts at any given time, then charting isn't what it used to be. Everything's upside down now. The crap rises to the top and the cream is pushed to the bottom by the tasteless masses. Give me "Anotherlove" or "Way Back Home" any day over the tripe on "top 40" radio now. No question.

What was Prince's last career single to ever make the Top 40?

Candidly speaking, this is Prince, it's foolish to make upbeat sales predictions.

I don't recall anyone on here expecting this to be a huge seller..at least not from what I've read.
I, as many, knew it wouldn't sell very well due to no promotion, and no airplay. Also, with the record industry as a whole in the crapper, it's extremely hard for anyone to get platinum status these days.
But, with those things being said... for him to sell as much as he has, and make the top 10 with his last 5 U.S. releases...not to mention the fact that Lotus Flower ran neck and neck against Keith Urban for the #1 spot, and it was only available at Target, no airplay, and just one commercial for promotion... i think Prince has faired very well!
Imagine if he and WB did promote AOA and got some decent airplay...I'd be willing to bet he would have debuted no lower than #2, and would probably stick around on the charts even longer.

Gold is 500,000 copies sold. AOA may get there eventualy, but it won't be "in a few weeks".

Being honest, I seldom give any thought to Prince's sales figures...things like that are his problem, not mine. lol

I thought this thread was gonna be about something else.

er

I was talking about it to the girl in the store when bought it and we agreed that it was doubtful whether these records were going to sell. There's plenty of folks who used to love P back in the day, but don't know what he's up to nowadays. But with little or no promotion, they're not gonna come back on board.

I would think that most fans, the long time ones anyways, have moved past requiring popular opinion to re-enforce their enjoyment of Prince's music. As corny as it sounds I think you really need to surrender to Prince in order to full appreciate his art. The vast majority will never do that.

They are number 1, but the level of denial is so strong with some people here that they could sell 10 million copies each that you'd still have people to create threads to say how much of a commercial failure it was rolleyes Also most people still live in the 90's and haven't realized that record sales aren't what they used to be, so they think prince is at the bottom of the sales because they believe everyone else is selling by the millions. This is ridiculous but this is what the Org has become...

Have we been bombarded with threads about it not selling? Surely everyone is aware that his albums usually top out at about a million worldwide - but nobody was thinking this is going to be a huge international hit.

The album has been out less than a month? AOA will ultimately sell over 100,000 copies. I'd be very surprised if PlectrumElectrum didn't do the same. I don't think anyone predicted otherwise. The breakfast experience got some attention but there was no strong push for it to do anything, it was just "made available". Once they tour both Art Official Age and PlectrumElectrum will shift a lot more copies.

Just imagine with proper promotion all around what these 2 albums could be doing. That said, I care much less about charts these days. Prince put out 2 really good albums. That's all that matters.

There are countless threads and IDEAS why Prince could have made this a HIT which was basically my point. This album as I said way back was not going to debut with anything close to 100,000 in a week, and like you said and I believe too, this album will probably just do 100,000 overall here in the states, PE will not. But again as much as people said they expected it, they still cant let go of the 80's ad 90's by offering UP the WHAT IF PRINCE did promo for the album and what if he did talk shows and videos blah blah blah. When Prince did LOTUS which everyone keeps bringing up he had a major retailer though not a music retailer, but someone who could stock and promote and position this album down evveryones throats, and he did some random tv shows and interviews etc...but again that was over half a decade ago, ALOT has changed, Prince for the most part has been off the radar though he popped up here and there on award shows and tv shows. But as I said before the purple rain re-issue is what got the attention from day one, none of the singles released garnered any attention, but everyone keeps holdiing on to this notion that PRINCE if only youd.......He is not 25 anymore and people are not looking for him, the industry and media world is a whole different world, artists who sell records now almost NEVER have a single, Bruce Springsteen constantly has number one debuts, when was the last time you heard a song from BRUCE on the radio or the top 100 songs?

Not unless he promotes the new album with his upoming tour and sells the CD at the concert, then and only then will he go gold in the U.S.

Yeh, but this is a fan forum... That's the kind of things fans say and talk about.

This album as I said way back was not going to debut with anything close to 100,000 in a week, and like you said and I believe too, this album will probably just do 100,000 overall here in the states, PE will not.

Once they tour. Both albums will easily sell over 100,000 copies.

But again as much as people said they expected it, they still cant let go of the 80's ad 90's by offering UP the WHAT IF PRINCE did promo for the album and what if he did talk shows and videos blah blah blah.

Again. It's a fan forum, you'd rather we all just had some quiet time? He has in the past proven that when he courts the LA elite he can get an album to #1. Even with insanely mediocre albums liek 3121.

When Prince did LOTUS which everyone keeps bringing up he had a major retailer though not a music retailer, but someone who could stock and promote and position this album down evveryones throats, and he did some random tv shows and interviews etc...but again that was over half a decade ago, ALOT has changed,

Lotus - another example. When he gets behind something he can make it take off. But no he doesn't have the hardcore following he used to.

Prince for the most part has been off the radar though he popped up here and there on award shows and tv shows.

Not sure of your point? It was never assumed Prince would debut at #1 because it's rare that he does. Although as I've said, look back though the past 14 years - the albums that did, he was on TV quite a lot.

Fans following their favorite artist(s) on the charts and hoping for singles/tv appearences is hardly a new concept. It's why they're fans.

Fans following their favorite artist(s) on the charts and hoping for singles/tv appearences is hardly a new concept. It's why they're fans.

But again people are saying "that this album is possibly a GOLD record" really? First thing is that whenever an artist sells a new album week one is the peak, with someone like a Prince these albums will most likely be off the charts in about a month, and after its debut dont expect either album to sell more than 10,000-20,000 a week as an average, expect this album to fall under the 10,000 range a week very fast. And granted a TOUR might help but as we all know Prince almost never promotes his NEW music in shows it is a rarity when he does. Those of you who remember Emancipation the 36 song epic work, he played no more than 3 at one time in a show on any dates. The only time PRINCE has really gone all out with a record and playing the whole thing (at least lately) was the Rainbow Children and that moved albums with no promo and an exclusive with Best Buy. Not sure if People realize that gold is 500,000 and this album stands at 51,000 in its peak selling week, so if he falls in the 10,000 average range (which is very generous) it will take this album 45 weeks to get there, if you think that is even a possibility than i dont know what to say. outside of that the albums are good, i think was the bigger picture, though AOA is a little too slow and poorly mixed and engineered it is still a strong record.
