Yeah, nothing resembles funk on AOA. As a matter of fact, AOA sounds a bit like Prince has been hanging out with this guy Welton a little too long.

People grossly abuse the word "funky"...

The problem with funk is that it's difficult to classify in terms of sound; it's all in the feeling. Something that brings out the funk face on a fellow orger, might well leave me stony faced. There's certainly no P-Funk inhabiting the album, but I'm getting a couple of funk signals on Art Official Age. In my purely subjective opinion, I'd classify the songs as follows:

Dance:

Art Official Cage

Essentially funk-free, but not necessarily without soul and/or a bit of bounce to the ounce:

Clouds, Breakdown, U Know, This Could Be Us, What It Feels Like

Prince doing his thing:

Way Back Home

Something jiggly sounding that could be mistaken for funk:

Funk n Roll

Somebody, somehow forgot to put the funk in:

The Gold Standard

The smell of funk in amongst other elements:

Breakfast Can Wait, Time

Hmm, I can't say you're wrong. Prince undoubtably has funk, but I can't find a definitive funk track here.

This is funky...

although it has some great tracks, AOA is not.

The bass in Time, though slow-paced and methodocial, is funky and reminiscent of some of Bootsy's slower tunes. Also, the horns that come in at the very end remind me of Fred Wesley and the Horny Horns. I would love to hear an extended version of the song that incorporates a bass solo and more horns. I think AOA has funy elements throughout, but no, it's not intended to be Mothership or Funkenstein funky.

There is a difference between saying that something is a "funk" album versus saying that it is "funky." If you can't hear the funk or funkiness of "The Gold Standard," "FunknRoll," and "Time," I question your ability to identify funk. So, no one is saying that AOA is a "funk" album or that it is definitive of "funk," but it certainly has it's funky moments, and if you are "too far gone to see that" then maybe you are Sir Nose D'Voidoffunk.
