Way Back Home = born dead As much as I like WAY BACK HOME, I think he should've changed the part were he spoke of being born alive, while most people are born dead. Lol, Mr Nelson no one is born dead, we all have a purpose, something to contribute. [Edited 10/1/14 14:47pm]

I think it's just a play on the phrase "everyone dies but not everyone truly lives". But it is Prince, after all, so who knows? [Edited 10/1/14 14:50pm]

[Edited 10/1/14 14:50pm] I get the gist of it all, but the point is that whether some are truly living or not, doesn't mean that they were not born alive( born with something to contribute to the world).

Perhaps he is referring to that moment when a person has left his/her mother's body, but has yet to breathe on their own as the "dead" part. Perhaps he is saying that he was born later, when he was already functioning on his own biologically. Maybe it's another element in the story line that he's been sleeping for 45 years and "comes alive" in the Art Official Age.
OR...hasn't Prince said that there was an issue when he was born - that he didn't take his first breath immediately? Perhaps it's a paradox. He was born dead but others were born alive, which means he was born alive but others were born dead. [Edited 10/1/14 15:04pm] We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Indeed and I mentioned earlier that the line even sounds condescending. Way Back Home is my favorite song from AOA but I don't sing that line. - Also don't like the 'blind people' line on TicTacToe and would have changed it to 'blindfolded'. [Edited 10/1/14 15:18pm]

You're thinking too deeply. I've understood not to think too deeply into princes cryptic messages as part of his crafted persona of mystique after reading his quote about the internet "They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you" I'm feeling a bit fammy™

I didn't take it that way. I took it to mean that he felt he was born to do what he is doing and (he knows it) vs.most people who don't feel that way about what they're doing. The very next line he talks about just that (his 'dream' or purpose). I think the 'home' he is referring to has to do with something of a musical nature. Perhaps getting back to that place where he first discovered music in its purest form. Before the buisness and all of that. I do acknowledge i could be reading too much into it too. Haha. I've always loved the ambiguity in a lot of his songs. Good music makes me happy.

My cousin was born dead. We put him in a tiny coffin. It was pretty fucked up. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

If he is sticking with his stated faith as a christian, the he is probably referring to the many bible verses that teach that we are all dead to sin and only made alive by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. The bible also teaches that we have been predestined by God to receive this grace before the foundations of the earth, so therefore while we are born dead to sin, we are alive in Christ: Ephesians 2:1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, Romans 6:11 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Matthew 8:22 But Jesus said to him, "Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead." Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, Ephesians 2:5-6 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 1:3-6 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

There's a few songs titled "Born Dead", so who knows he might be referring to one of them.

All those potential Prince, and Princess whom we will never experience their gifts! They were born alive, yet, died before their gifts could ever reach fruition. [Edited 10/1/14 19:16pm]

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

"Power to the ones who raise a child like me", lol how was Prince raised? A broken home? Divorced parents? Living at Andre Cymone's house? Lol

Has Prince become larger than life? Egotistical?

This is a song which contains a fembot telling him that the only thing that matters in life is himself and that anyone or anything that wants his attention elsewhere is an evildoer. So.

I think he is tipping his hat to parents who have had to raise a difficult child like he was. In other words, he was somewhat of a problem child.

As above, so below. The microcosm is the macrocosm, etc. It is about the self, but the concept of the self is expanded to encompass the entire universe and everything in it. In many respects it is a dissolution of the self into something much wider and less egotistically 'self-centred'.

I'm just glad there's a Prince song with lyrics actually worth analyzing again. It's a little different than, say, Everybody Loves Me. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

This, kind of. I took it to mean he doesn't want the standard thing, like get married, get a 9-5, pay the mortgage have kids and go through braindead routine forever - he wants something else and islooking for it, and when he's found it he'll be "home", or has found his way back home (his purpose). And as for the power to the ones who raised a child like me line, I think he's referring to whoever raised him did something right to make him want something "more" or "else". And I don't necessarily think it's autobiographical, it could be from the perspective of a fictional character, not just Prince's perspective. It IS writing, after all. [Edited 10/2/14 5:43am]

I considered that 45 years would make him 100, but he'd still be youngish. I don't know what to do with it after that.
