Prince "period" classifications How do you group Prince albums? Decades is bit too arbitrary. Been thinking about this in light of the new albums. Here's how I currently think of it: . . . . .
Disco Prince - For you, Prince . Rude Boy - Dirty Mind, Controversy . Baby I'm a Star- 1999, PR, AWTWIAD . Indi-Artsy Prince - Parade, SOTT . Confused Prince - LoveSexy/Black Album . Tinny Plastic Prince - Batman, GB . Gun "keeping it real" Mic Prince - D&P/Symbol . Wilderness Years Prince - Come, Gold, Exodus, C&D, Emancipation . Cynical Prince- NPS, Rave . Evil Prince - TRC . Retooled User Friendly Prince - Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth . Confident "I just do what I want" Prince: Lotus, MPLS, 20ten, AOA, PE .

On a more serious note, any division in periods is somewhat arbitrary but this would be mine, based on the music itself, not so much the personal phases of Prince's life/career: . 1978-1985 (For You to Double Live): Prince builds the basics of the Minneapolis Sound, basically becoming a musical genre all by himself. 'Nuff said! 1985-1990 (Around The World In A Day to Graffiti Bridge): Prince explores many new musical territories, including pop and jazz, diversifies his output and musical vocabulary, a very versatile moment. 1991-1996 (Diamonds And Pearls to Chaos & Disorder/The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale): Prince matures, reabsorbs his Afro-American heritage, becomes somewhat more of a R&B act and less of a pop artist, and most of his music from this era has a "live band" sound. 1996-2001 (Emancipation to The Chocolate Invasion/The Slaughterhouse): The so-called "plastic years", Prince incorporates the 90's "vibe" in his music in significant ways, with a very synthetic and often minimalist sound that contrasts the heavy "live" sound of the previous era. 2001-2003 (The Rainbow Children to N.E.W.S.): The so-called "jazz years", a very short period indeed but significantly different from what preceded and followed, with strong jazz influences and a very organic sound. 2004-???? (Musicology to ???): The longest period by far. Prince goes into a neo-classical period where he continuously emulates either his past self or classic R&B and rock, with few -if any- significant new musical elements. It's possible that Art Official Age may represent the begining of a new era, though, for there is somewhat of a departure from the previous albums (including Plectrumelectrum) here, it'll depend where he goes next, it's too early to tell. For You - Prince Dirty Mind - Controversy 1999 - Purple Rain AWTWIAD - Parade - SOTT - Lovesexy - Black Album Batman - GB - D&P - Symbol - Come Gold - Exodus C&D - Emancipation - NPS - Rave - Chocolate Factory - Slaughterhouse TRC - NEWS - Musicology 3121 - Planet Earth - Lotus - MPLS - 20ten - AOA - PE OF4S, Girl 6 OST & Crystal Ball (+The Truth & Kamasutra) are difficult to integrate because they collect songs from various periods. Musicology -the song- sounds a bit like The Work, Pt. II and yeah the band and sound of the tour still had something of the ONA tour in them, nonetheless Musicology -the album- was by all means a pop album, easy to grasp and aimed at mainstream audiences, rehashing -and I don't mean it as a critic- all kind of things Prince had done before.
