As an album, I think it's my favourite of the new ones. NouveauDance summed it up for me for the most part. I like it because many of the tracks have a DF era vibe and there's less contemporary pop / R&B trend chasing on it than on the most other newer ones. I can't take the lyrics of the first or the last track seriously either, so I, you know, don't. I just enjoy the vibe and the DF era approach (I really like the W&L esque middle section of the title track). I don't even mind "Mr. Goodnight", because it's so close to "Player" and I always liked that one for its roughness.

It's not a classic album by any means, as the songwriting really isn't there, but listening to it is like listening to an outtake collection. It's a satisfying listening experience to me as such.

I kind of like the album cover in that "oh, it's just Prince being Prince" way too.

Don't think W&L payed on the title track at all.

Yeah, that's what I've heard too. That's why I used the word "esque". It means "in the style of", "resembling", etc.

As I read the credits on three different sites, they're not listed as credits on the title song, but both of them are listed on The One U Wanna C.

Yes, it's one his best 00s albums for me, probably only bettered by Lotusflower and TRC.

.

The only bum note to me is Mr. Goodnight, everything else is ranges from ok to great. Not crazy about The 1 U Wanna C, but this album contains some of my favourite 00s tracks - All The Midnights, Resolution, Future Baby Mama, Chelsea Rodgers, Guitar, SHOE - All great tracks.

.

I'm always surprised that people dislike songs like All The Midnights and Resolution, the latter especially to me sounds like it could've come from the Dream Factory sessions and All The Midnights reminds me Pearls Before The Swine which I also like a lot. I get that it starts to sound a bit polite old church lady, but it doesn't outstay it's welcome - in fact the whole album doesn't and it's very, very lite on the modern hip-pop/R&B genre chasing that bogs down albums like Musicology, 3121 and MPLSound, I really appreciate that.

.

I really like "All the Midnights." But I hate "Resolution" because of its trite, Barney-esque lyrics (the same reason I dislike the song Planet Urf).

Come to think of it, that's why I dislike a lot of Prince's recent output. He has completely lost the ability to tell a story. What's worse is that he doesn't even try.

[Edited 9/19/14 9:39am]

As I read one review of the song, the writer thinks that Prince was just having fun with the lyrics and this is not the most prolific album Prince has made. I could agree with that, but still impressed with the songs.

I agree the lyrics of Resolution are trite, that kind of goes over my head though if I like the melody, atmosphere etc, which I do. It gives me vibes of Prince, Wendy & Lisa 85/6 stuff like Teacher, Teacher - that frothy, off-beat pop that was really unique to that triad. I forget who does the female backing vocals (The Twins?) but they really capture that sound of late era Revolution.

Former Revolution bandmembers Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman are credited on the album without any specific track credits (as is the case with all musicians involved on the album), but it is believed that they
contributed to this track (as well as The One U Wanna C). It is not known when or where their contribution was recorded, however.

Recording Personnel

Pretty sure Wendy gave an interview describing their contribution to Lion Of Judah. They worked on it separately, with Prince sending over a recording for them to add stuff to, but with instructions not to change certain parts. I got the impression that Wendy would have liked to have radically altered the track if Prince hadn't instructed otherwise.

I quite like Planet Earth and certainly go back to it more than 20Ten.

I've always felt the sequencing is a little off though: to me it flows better starting from track 2 having 'Guitar' as the opener and moving 'Planet Earth' to the end, with everything else as per the album. That guitar solo at the end of Planet Earth track just seems like a more natural finish to an album than an opening track to me.

At the time this album was released, my father was dying and I went to take care of him at home for two months. Hé needed constant attention because eh was allowed to smoke, and being on morphine he was always dropping his cigarettes, so it meant watching him 18 hours a day and often staying up all night because he couldn't sleep. On more than one occasion, I was up for more than 24 hours.

There was no way I could stand listening to Planet Earth the song, I stayed away from any sad songs. The only song that I cared for was Chelsea Rodgers, it got me going, it's classic disco funk very well executed very playful. The playfulness is what makes this song special, it seems he genuinely had fun with it.

Chelsea Rodgers is sometimes listed as one of the good tracks recorded in the last 15 years and is a much better party anthem than trite attempts like Life Of the Party, so I expect this song to be a minor Prince classic, later era, years from now when lots of water has passed under the bridge.

I really like this album with the exception of Chelsea Rodgers and I can take or leave Future Baby Mama. The CD I listen to in the car has CR replaced by FUNK and for me the album is much better for it. Love it.

I like "Chelsea Rodgers", it's enjoyable, but having "F.U.N.K." instead of it might have worked better for the overall flow and feel of the album. Somehow I don't feel they both necessarily fit the same record.

If he only had left of Lion of Judah and Resolution and put in a song a la F.U.N.K. then this would have been his best album since Rainbow Children.

Not from me you won't. I love that song, I have the greatest album and that is one of the highlights that still stands up after multiple listens (When you are tired of the reflex and Rio).

.

Planet Earth was their first hit released in early 1981 it made #9 in Britain, and made them chart stars at least. The official video merely has them playing their instruments on Top of the Pops. It was eclipsed however by the next song "Girls on Film" complete with a racy clip of girls in a wet shirt fighting/boxing bout with a fat old man. The video was immediately censured and gossiped about and the song made Duran Duran big stars.

.

The rest is history!!!!

.

Prince's album is alright, there's mostly okay songs, the bedroom raps are average if funny. I like lines like "I come like Thunder" and "If u wanna get creamy" from the 1 u wanna c. Lion of Judah is great along with Guitar and title track, the rest is at least decent. I don't why it gets so much flak.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

It's an OK album. It's one of his 'white' albums, sounding more like a Revolution b-side compilation than the more recent stuff he had been doing.

The biggest issue is that none of the songs 'wow' the listener. They are just kind of there.

However, I don't get why people hate this thing so much. It's better than 20Ten or

most of what I've heard from Art Official Age. shrug

If you take the first half of Planet Earth and the Frist half of of 20ten you have a strong album of gems in my opinion, then save the latter half of each album as b-sides or extras online releases.

I fully agree. This is actually one of my favourite P albums from the nillies.

It has some nice memories attached to it as well, like a nice two-day trip to sunny London, and an O² gig.

I love every song on the album, really do.

I still find it hard to take the album seriously. Planet earth (the song) talks about how fragile the world is - and by Mr Goodnight he's offering to send a private jet to an un-named girl. Not exactly helping there are we Prince confused

  1. Future Baby Mama – 4:47 The lyrics are a tad too ghettoish but I love the vocal delivery, the music and the whole vibe of this song. And,as ghettoish as the lyrics are, they are still better than Guitar, The One U Wanna C etc. etc.

I'll agree that the title and lyrics are ghettoish, but the song is very nice.

Interesting though that Prince can make the twins sound like W&L...

I seriously doubt a revolution reunion would sound lack luster like this album
