I Was Listening To The Planet Earth Album For The First Time

...and I was really impressed with the tracks on there. My favorite is Planet Earth, though. Also, I like Guitar because it appears to mirror his love live. Anyone impressed with this album? Released in 2007.

poeple on this site dont like this album. there just gonna complain how he's lost it, and how they want him to return to his 80's sound. this is one of my favorite albums of the 2000's era. my favorites are planet earth, guitar, all the midnights in the world and lion of ludah!

I am actually okay with Planet Earth - except for the first and last tracks. And I can't remember the last time I loved a Prince album start to finish, so that's not really a knock against it.

I love the title cut. 3:50 into the song really gives me chills

There are good songs on the album, just no cohesive feel

With an album with that title, the songs have no real flow, no connection to the title concept

that kind of thing for me always will turn my attention level up. One reason I love Rainbow Children

I know these are songs from different periods with different sounds but if Planet Earth looked like this

it would probably be a better liked album

I'm okay with most of the songs that people hate: Mr. Goodnight, Chelsea Rogers, Resolution.

On the other hand, Guitar and The One U Wanna C leave me cold.

And Planet Earth (the song) to me, is among the most dreary pieces of music I've ever forced myself to listen to.

No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I like this cd too. The only song I don't like it Lion of Judah, it sucks. Somewhere here on earth is awesome and so is Chelsey Rogers.

Yes, it's one his best 00s albums for me, probably only bettered by Lotusflower and TRC.

.

The only bum note to me is Mr. Goodnight, everything else is ranges from ok to great. Not crazy about The 1 U Wanna C, but this album contains some of my favourite 00s tracks - All The Midnights, Resolution, Future Baby Mama, Chelsea Rodgers, Guitar, SHOE - All great tracks.

.

I'm always surprised that people dislike songs like All The Midnights and Resolution, the latter especially to me sounds like it could've come from the Dream Factory sessions and All The Midnights reminds me Pearls Before The Swine which I also like a lot. I get that it starts to sound a bit polite old church lady, but it doesn't outstay it's welcome - in fact the whole album doesn't and it's very, very lite on the modern hip-pop/R&B genre chasing that bogs down albums like Musicology, 3121 and MPLSound, I really appreciate that.

I really like "All the Midnights." But I hate "Resolution" because of its trite, Barney-esque lyrics (the same reason I dislike the song Planet Urf).

Come to think of it, that's why I dislike a lot of Prince's recent output. He has completely lost the ability to tell a story. What's worse is that he doesn't even try.

Man, I got bashed for loving this album. The only song I don't like is 'Mr. Goodnight'. I absolutely adore the title track ('Planet Earth'), 'Lion Of Judah', 'Resolution', and 'All The Midnights In The World'... songs which most here don't like, which I find strange, as these represent musical sides of Prince that were mbraced in the past... Also, this was the last time we heard those styles. He must have been quite discouraged by the "fans" reactions.

.

Other songs are also quite stellar, like 'Chelsea Rodgers', 'The One U Wanna C', and 'Guitar'. 'Somewhere Here on Earth' is among the best ballads he's done.

I had no issue with the music on Planet Earth, at all. But I'm someone who actually listens to the words (one of the hazards of being a writer). The words are where he falls down of late.

I agree the lyrics of Resolution are trite, that kind of goes over my head though if I like the melody, atmosphere etc, which I do. It gives me vibes of Prince, Wendy & Lisa 85/6 stuff like Teacher, Teacher - that frothy, off-beat pop that was really unique to that triad. I forget who does the female backing vocals (The Twins?) but they really capture that sound of late era Revolution.

Not so impressed by this album. But it alwys brings back the indigo aftershow where he played a lot of the songs in the same order.

Guitar on the album is better than all the live versions i have heard.

I'm loving Somwhere Here On Earth, too. Lion Of Judah is cool. I agree with you that Prince brought some nostalgia to the mix, when he recorded this album

As an album, I think it's my favourite of the new ones. NouveauDance summed it up for me for the most part. I like it because many of the tracks have a DF era vibe and there's less contemporary pop / R&B trend chasing on it than on the most other newer ones. I can't take the lyrics of the first or the last track seriously either, so I, you know, don't. I just enjoy the vibe and the DF era approach (I really like the W&L esque middle section of the title track). I don't even mind "Mr. Goodnight", because it's so close to "Player" and I always liked that one for its roughness.

It's not a classic album by any means, as the songwriting really isn't there, but listening to it is like listening to an outtake collection. It's a satisfying listening experience to me as such.

I kind of like the album cover in that "oh, it's just Prince being Prince" way too.

Former Revolution bandmembers Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman are credited on the album without any specific track credits (as is the case with all musicians involved on the album), but it is believed that they contributed to this track (as well as The One U Wanna C). It is not known when or where their contribution was recorded, however.

It is not really an album I often go back to but the songs on it that I like have aged well and I still like them a lot. I think this could have been a really strong album if he´d done a few things differently. There are some interesting details here and there, and even the weaker songs have their moments.

  1. Planet Earth – 5:51 A tad too bombastic and cliché for my tastes. And also a bit too formulaic. Reminds me a bit of Strays of the World but, I love Strays of the World but this song? Not so much.
  2. Guitar – 3:45 Can´t stand it. Really, really can´t stand it. Still don´t know why so many fans love it, and why Prince loves it. lol
  3. Somewhere Here on Earth – 5:45 Definitely a classic and the live version on Jay Leno´s Tonight Show was flawless, probably one of his best TV renditions. Love this song, the video, the feel of it, great, classic Prince song, great music, great lyrics, not generic like so many of his newer ballads. Love it!
  4. The One U Wanna C – 4:29 Can´t . Stand. It! Always skip this one. The lyrics are absolutely not my thing, and the music is reminiscent of old classics like When U Were Mine and other guitar driven classics...only that this one does nothing for me whereas the When U Were Mine and ICNTTPOYM are among my all time favorite songs, ever.
  5. Future Baby Mama – 4:47 The lyrics are a tad too ghettoish but I love the vocal delivery, the music and the whole vibe of this song. And,as ghettoish as the lyrics are, they are still better than Guitar, The One U Wanna C etc. etc.
  6. Mr. Goodnight – 4:26 Oh come on Prince. Seriously? lol These kind of lyrics from the same guy who wrote The Beautiful Ones, Condition of the Heart and Mountains? Personally, I´ve never been a big fan of his more materialistic, bragging songs.
  7. All the Midnights in the World – 2:21 Reminds me of the Revolution era in a bad way. Yes, there , I said it. There are indeed many Revolution songs that I don´t like that much, like Teacher Teacher and Make Your Mama Happy....this one is reminiscent of them, somehow. Not my thing, but maybe I need to give it a chance.
  8. Chelsea Rodgers – 5:41 Can´t stand this generic tune and the lyrics and the umpteenth time that Prince dedicates a song to a girl for reasons only he knows. Absolutely not my cup of tea and it has everything in it that I don´t like about the 00s incarnation of the extended NPG. Sounds too retro, too. Don´t like it. If he wants to go retro, why not rediscover that dude named Prince from the mid 80s instead of recycling the 70s?
  9. Lion of Judah – 4:10 Love, love, absolutely LOVE this one. Weird and great vocal delivery, great melody and music in general, great arrangement, nice lyrics. Its only flaw in my opinion is the religious imagery in its title that kind of reminds me a bit of the often used biblical imagery used in Rastafarian Roots Reaggae music.....with the Lion Of Judah and all......it´s a great, classic Prince rock song that doesn´t sound as sterile as most of his newer rock songs....if it wasn´t for the Lion of Judah line, this one could have been an all time classic I guess. I really like this one.
  10. Resolution – 3:40 It´s aight....just not my thing. See my opinion on All The Midnights....not really my kind of song.

So, all in all, there are THREE albums on it that I still like, and the rest of the album is kinda meh. It´s one of those albums I´ve only listened to a few times and skipped a lot of songs on.

And....I paid quite a lot of money for it back then before I went to the o2 shows where I received a free copy. lol

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

This is what I suspect a Revolution reuninon would sound like. Which is why I don't want a Revolution reunion.

Interesting though that Prince can make the twins sound like W&L...
