From just the 30sec sample this is totally different then the cool live version performed on Arsenio. I was diggin that live joint and was excited for the album version. Is this going to be another Fury where the live version kicks the studio versions arse? I hope not...especially if with the recent video production this is going to be the first single to try to get some airplay... Also why is this single not yet available on iTunes preorder to download? [Edited 9/18/14 6:29am]

Did you not get to hear the studio album which was leaked to radio a while back? I expect that to be on Plectrumelectrum. It's a hell of a lot better than this one and as much as I love the live versions, I actually preferred it on the studio version I think. Very much looking forward to the PE version in perfect quality.

Nope I didn't hear it but I sure hope to hear it soon to restore my faith in this track...

It seems to me that he is getting back at WB by giving them a crappy album in return for his masters. As good as he is there is no way that this is the best stuff that he has. Already looking forward to the next album. He gave them substandard efforts with Come and Chaos and Disorder, but he was holding Gold and Emancipation in his back pocket.

No one wants to see a 56 year old man singing autotune to Timbaland beats.

I'm hopeful that I will still be pleasantly surprised by this album because now my expectations are at an all time low. I do like Breakdown and Clouds, but given that two of the dozen songs are complete busts there is no way this album will be a classic.

I see why WB is not doing much promotion.

Perhaps AOA is for the kids and we aint really supposed to understand it. Maybe PE and the rumoured NPG release are for the fanbase.

I think that is the strategy. I don't like it, but I'll roll with it. I'm actually looking forward to PE, except for the fact that he is not singing lead on all of the songs.

AOA reminds me of Diana Ross in the 80's when she was trying to sound like Janet Jackson. He may think that it makes him cool with the younger fans, but kids will cringe.

I was wondering earlier who it's aimed at. It seems way off the mark for fans of anything he's done up to this point and kids aren't going to buy something by a 56 year old man tryng to be cool are they? Im very confused by it so far. I hadn't been too down on Josh so far as I'd quite liked Fallinlove2nite and was looking forward to seeing what happened with the album but not now. Even a good song like Breakdown has been marred by terrible production.

But what do I know, it'll probably sell millions and be a number one hit. lol

LOL....The Org jumps off the cliff again....

This version of the song has been played at listening parties and various sessions (this solo version of "FunkNRoll" was the one I described as "Prince in the Trap..." when I did a review of it some months back...Not my cup of tea, but I dig most of the other solo tracks I've heard)...

But for all u hip-hop/R&B haters, don't worry your pretty heads....The original swinging LoveSexy type "FunkNRoll" will be on the 3rdeyegirl joint, which is already looking like that's going to be one of the better songs on that album. Oddly enough I'm more interested in the Prince solo joint than the group thing...I'll let y'all rock to "WHITECAPS" and the Hannah/Josh duets...

If this 30 second clip is from the intro of the song (or a breakdown), then it still could be good... HOWEVER, that woodblock sound needs some more swing to it. It's too straight, and doesn't lay back in the groove.

.

I think something happened to Prince when his 20ten project was rejected by labels and distribution (with WB likely in that mix). Think about it... he pours himself into crafting a real throwback sounding Prince album, no one bites, so he chops the album down drastically, and gives it away. Then, he becomes "album shy". There was another album project in the works, which would have included 'Rock & Roll Love Affair', 'Screwdriver', etc. Remember the shirts, guitar, and lyric sheet, all with the flaming graphics?

From another thread:

1 WOW (Prince lead vocals)
2 PRETZELBODYLOGIC (Prince lead vocals)
3 AINTTURNINROUND (Hannah lead vocals, no Prince)
4 PLECTRUMELECTRUM (instrumental)
5 WHITECAPS (Hannah lead vocals, Prince background vocals)
6 FIXURLIFEUP (Prince lead vocals)
7 BOYTROUBLE (Hannah lead vocals, no Prince)
8 STOPTHISTRAIN (Hannah and Josh(?) lead vocals, Prince background vocals)
9 ANOTHERLOVE (Prince lead vocals)
10 TICTACTOE (Hannah lead vocals, Prince background vocals)
11 MARZ (Prince lead vocals)
12 FUNKNROLL (Prince lead vocals)

im sure that will be possible. It will just be difficult to mesh them together as PE and AOA are going to sound so different.

I started my definitive compilation from the past couple of years already. It isnt very long unfortunately:

Extraloveable reloaded
RNRLA Original

Groovey Potential

Same Page...

Boyfriend

Screwdriver

And thats it really (I think). Hopefully I will be able to add a few gems from the 2 albums and have something half decent so that 2010 - 2014 isnt a complete write off.

At this point I'm thinking the same. I'll be surprised if I like more than 2-3 songs on each disc.
If I end up liking half of each disc I'll be satisfied...

Clearly AOA is aimed at the general audience and should resonate really well with the youth, provided there is some promotion in place. I am happy this album will not be delving too much into past. FUNKNROLL should fit the overall feel of the release perfectly.

But why cater to a group that is not even checking for him? Makes no sense.

I really think y'all need to pull out some past Prince albums...There has always been some dubious head scratchers on his releases....lol

That said, I'm hearing more positive word about Art Official Age than I am the 3rdeyegirl project....Even with a WTF joint like the "FunkNRoll" remix I'm much more interested in the solo joint (I like every other song I've heard from Art Official...and a few I've heard at a listening session)...

I think it's less about the youth and more about catering to the R&B/soul audience, but on his own terms...

I also think that people are going a little too THE SKY IS FALLING route with Art Official Age....I would be much more alarmed with the 3rdeyegirl project at this point given that Prince sings backup on a good number of the songs.....

You know what's funny? If I played a non obsessive Prince fan who isn't pining away for a Revolution reunion "U Know" and then this "FunkNRoll" remix they would be able to seperate one from the other...I know to a lot of the folks on this site they sound the same....But it's obvious which one would get a thumbs up and which one would get you laughed out the room....

I'm actually enjoying the snippet. Go figure. And as someone said before, it's fresh for Prince. Just go with the flow for now, peeps, and allow him to take us somewjere a bit different. This is what made him a legend in the first place. Or would you rather every new song be just what you expected? In other words- give it a chance.

I certainly don't want a revolution reunion and U Know and Funknroll only sound the same in as much as they both sound not very good. I've liked almost everything up to this point, it's not like I'm a hater of new stuff. Fixurlifeup, RnR Affair, Screwdriver, Groovy Potential, loved loads of the new stuff. Enjoyed 20Ten and all the past albums.

I'm hoping they grow on me. U know didn't sound as terrible on the 2nd listen but still waiting for the album to listen to it more.
