"Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" doesn't sample "The Max". It's the melody from the Duke Ellington piece from "Caravan" and Prince has used it on some other tracks too ("Days Of Wild" uses a variation of it and it's used on the unreleased "Soul Psychodelicide", which exists as three different versions).

However, "sampling" means that you're taking a portion of another recording and including it in a new piece of yours. It doesn't refer to playing some melodic or rhythmic part of an earlier composition on a new piece (although this use has started to get more common on Wikipedia articles and the like, but it's incorrectly used in that context).

In other words, playing the melody of "Caravan" on a guitar and including it on a song of your own isn't sampling.

Yes, it's an interpolation, to be correct. But, samples, interpolations or quotes are, I think what Jerky asked for.

God, I must be half tone, I never paid attention to the party up thing in the mix.

And the sighs of the woman, is that the thing supposed to be in the LOVESEXY song? From what we can read here, it seems that MNIP misunderstood many about the samples used.

Perhaps the dumbest example is "Movie Star" sampling a song that was recorded nearly ten years LATER...with "Jam of The Year." So stupid to release an old outtake with a new song sampled in...and don't get me started on "Joy In Repetition" having its wonderful linn drum intro ruined by the Eye No/Alphabet St Segue stupidly placed there.

Letitgo (Sherm Stick Edits) sample The Ballad of Dorothy Parker.

Just for the record, Koppleman stated once that in his time it was common that would work on a new track then suddenly send the engineer to the vault to bring back a particular unreleased song so could pick up a track or a sample from it. Koppleman said that he was shocked at how had such a detailed memory of his entire catalogue so he could just suddenly think of using a bit of an old song in a new one. It's very possible that this practice started early and that some released songs sample unreleased songs we don't have (see the The Line #2 example above: 2 samples suddenly revealed more than 20 years after release).

The guitar solor in Prince's unreleased version of Chocolate resurfaced at the 3:30 mark of Shortberry Strawcake on Sheila E.'s In The Glamorous Life, and again on The Time's version of Chocolate on Pandemonium in 1990.
