Yes, that was an amazing thing to do. But have you noticed that things like that only happen to the fans who idolise him and gush nothing but praise for everything he does no matter how bad it is.

babynoz said: He was nice as pie when I met him too....that doesn't necessarily invalidate Meshell's experience with him. I suspect that they were okay at one time, which is why she felt she could ask him to play on her record. She has so much respect and admiration for him that his rebuff must have felt like a bucket of cold water. Why this is still such an issue for her all these years later is rather odd. Honestly, I don't know much about Meshell, but considering where his mindset was with WB at the time, he made that comment to her, seems he was trying to educate her that she was being used musically, and controlled by the label, similar to a slavemaster to a slave, on the level of ownership where they could tell her to 'Jump at their command, when and how, just like a house negro would', so-to-speak. She probably wasn't trying to hear what could have been, an uncomfortable truth for her, and like many musicians, was just 'trying to eat', and not wanting to hear about or get involved in the politics of the music industry. Doesn't seem like she may have got his point, after all these years. So now that she sees Prince obtained his masters from WB, and working with them again, sounds like she sees that move as hypocritical, but sort of misses the point that at the time he made that comment to her, he was angry at WB, didn't have ownership of his masters or control of his music that WB owned at the time. I agree. The only true way you can form an opinion about someone's personality, is if you actually take the time to really get to know that person...not just running with what somebody else says about him / her.
I mean, yeah, sure, Prince isn't without his flaws--who is?--but I really, truly believe that he is a good person, & he can actually be very, very nice to people.
And, BTW, if we're really gonna go so far as to compare Prince to anybody, I think we should be comparing him more to Stanley Kubrick. Their personalities are a lot alike, IMO. "One life is all we have, & we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are, & to live without belief...that is a fate more terrible than dying." -- Joan Of Arc

[Edited 9/11/14 2:39am] So, in order to prove he's a nice guy, he'd need to fly Bart or Hatrina to concert for free? Or maybe he opens an Ebola Centre in Africa, tending to patients himself -- would that do the trick?

The only problem I have with all these ORGERS saying he is as nice as pie is that many of you would most likely have been so starstruck to actually make a proper judgement anyway.
I haven't met Prince personally, so I certainly cant make any judgement, but as one who has read serveral biographies on the man, plus numerous articles relating to those who have worked with him, a recurring theme seems to be that he can be, shall we say "difficult" at times.
There has been numerous stories of musicians not being paid for their work e.g. Rosie Gaines, business deals that have fallen over because Prince simply lost interest apparently e.g. 3121 Perfume deal, there was that story that did the rounds of a fan who approached Prince at a club around 1997 to express his appreciation of the Emancipation album, to which Prince apparently responded with "What precisely is your point?" or words to that effect.
And like alot of stars of the magnitude of Prince, MJ and Madonna, one suspects that the only people that have lengthy tenures within the camp are the people who fall into the catagory of "Yes" people. If you are somebody who is working for Prince and you are either incapable or unwilling to give Prince what he wants, when he wants it and how he wants it, you would be finding yourself being escorted out the gates of Paisley Park pretty damn quickly.
I love the mans music, but there has been enough said about his personality over the years by numerous sources for me to be fairly satisfied that at best, Prince is a "testy" character.

ummm ok.. rosie wasnt paid or she thought she should be paid more....what susceesful person isnt testy,, fuck my vp of sales , and ceo can all be major league assholes at times,, what fucking world you live in where everyone is nicve constantly

I think Prince is like a lot of people in this world , he can be a nice person in real life and ruthless in music matters( business etc). That proves like everybody else , nobody is perfect. [Edited 9/24/14 11:17am]

According to a number of sources, there was apparently times where musicians simply werent paid for lengthy periods of time. I believe this formed part of the reason why Rosie Gaines ended up leaving the New Power Generation. There was a dispute over the erratic nature of payments being handed out to the musicians, and lets face it, they are all just trying to make a living. As to whether they were being paid enough, thats an entirely different matter.

Awesome!! Yes, it was a great show!!! I was front row, last seat facing stage (the handsome Italian guy..LOL) I was surprised that she did so many Nina Simone songs since that was her last album. The group in the middle of the front row had me cracking up when Meshell started singing a tune from Bitter...LOL...They were up like they were in church...LOL. Such a fun evening.
