At the time (1991) Prince was still the main reference point in pop music. All eyes were still on him. Even Bono´s eyes, through his fly glasses. I think 1993-94 were the years when he began to lose relevance for many critics and pop fans alike, myself included. I know many of you state that his best period ended in 1988, but I remember Prince still being considered the great pop genius until the name change and the Come fiasco.
U2 has just released their new album, today for free, on iTunes.....

By the time this video came out, which was 1992, Prince was a laughing stock for many with Tony M and those Star Trek Next Generation uniforms he and the dancers wore. His music was still highly respected, but the lame rapping took its toll on Prince's repuation. Michael Jackson was probably more respected at the time.
What's funny to me, is that I've watched that U2 video at least 50 times or more, and must have missed it...but it's not rare for me to "listen" to video more than actually paying attention.

The video came out in 1992, but the song in 1991. Anyway, I didn't see what you saw back in the day. I'm not saying Prince was as respected in 1991-92 as in 1987, but I don't think "many" considered him a "laughing stock", and, that's my impression, Michael Jackson was very, very far from Prince as a reference in the pop music world.
