Prince was ranked 22 in NME's 'Most Influential Artists Today', with Radiohead being number one.

As Gotye and Kimbra considered Prince to be a huge influence on their careers, how many alternative rock bands or artists consider Prince an influence? 'cause you can't say the same for pop phenomens like MJ or Madonna... with Prince being more artistic and different.

I can't think of hand about Prince , but maybe Madonna influential those people who can't sing like herself, that you can sell millions of records.

I'm talking about alternative bands, like the xx, vampire weekend, grizzly bear and stuff..

I'm an old punker, most of my friends are too, and LOTS of them really like Prince. I always see musician pals I haven't run into in years when I go to a big show. This has been true since the 80s, lots of us didn't listen to any radio pop that was big at the time except for Prince. The group WACO, a kind of avant-garde chamber orchestra, did a Purple Rain tribute show about 10 years ago that was a big hit in our little scene.

Hard to say how much he is influential on their own music though. I can't recall any real specific Prince-influenced stuff. But he gets respect for standing up to record companies and doing his own thing, no matter how perverse it is. We punker types like to see that in an artist. "Hey, that guy hates record companies too! We're like brothers!"

I think just about all of them. Who hates Prince?

The difference is, you're not going to be in the studio and listen to Beat It or Borderline, and think "I should use that bass line" or "that transition was brilliant". But if you're going through a Prince kick, chances are something like Dirty Mind will figure into what you're doing. You can be a synth band, a guitar band, etc. and still get something out of it.

It's also really common to hear Prince out at indie dance nights.

I think that any musician will appreciate Prince...he is a phenom when it comes to playing any instrument.

Pop culture...sure, Prince is outshone by Mileys and Beibers, but when it comes to musicianship, EVERYBODY is impressed.
