Prince uses often the same scales, thats right!He mixed

the pentatonic with the dorian scala!But on the other

side, when i listen to the concert from 5.12.87, he uses

a lot of different scales, very jazzy and innovative.The

gig 18.8.88 also, great guitar work.But the solo at the

end from Sign of the times during the ona Tour, he used

only a lot of effects, thats not really difficult.But

it sounds great. And thats the point. What he plays

is perfect to his music.

Ok I'm not gonna take the same old "I gave P a Brazilian wax" (or something) bait. But one thing I'm getting tired of on the org is how little some people know about jazz, yet they get all pedantic about it. Do you people ever LISTEN to jazz?

Jazz has many, many subgenres and while in SOME 'difficult' chord extensions and exotic scales are used, there are lots and lost of great jazz musicians who like Prince, play in a blues-based style.

This can be said for much classic Hard Bop (from Lou Donaldson to Jimmy Smith), but if you want to talk about guitar players specifically, respected jazzmen like Melvin Sparks, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Kenny Burrell en Grant Green on many occassions used more simple scales and chords than Prince does in Strollin' or She Spoke To Me (extended) or A Love Bizarre for instance.

I personally would love to hear more guitarists play jazz without the ego-trip virtuoso thing which is NOT what this music is about. Give me Ronny Jordan over Scofield anytime.

Obviously, it just frustrates the chronic so much that he is nowhere near as successful as any of the artists he mentions, even though he apparently has the greater talent!
I pity you, chronic. Even if you are better than Prince, which I seriously doubt, this is not chronic.org and nobody here is buying your music.

The theatrics don't obscure the actual playing for me, neither do any of the extremely talented musicians I know (including jazz-fusionists) think Prince is anything less than brilliant. Some don't like his style of music, but nobody denies his obvious proficiency with instruments and production talent. And you also place far too much weight on technical proficiency - you could be the most gifted player on the planet, but if it's shit music, or music that doesn't move you in some way, then what's the point?

Now, the guitar player in my band I rate in the top 10 in the world at the moment. Chronic, if you'd like to org.note me, I'll gladly arrange to swap a tune with you - then we can see if anyone is talking out of their arse. Rise to it!

Don't Get Me wrong I like MJ also, but I went off him after HIStory, I liked about half of it. I still got Invinsible but I didn't really like that at all. I like the video fro yourockmyworld though. Prince is much better than MJ in all respects and I don't think I will ever go off him. Unless he duets with Gareth Gates or Will Young.
