people rave about hsi live shows now, but to me they are Prince Lite.

boring trite and dull

I went to his shows in 85, 88 and 93..... 1988 being the best of them, but none of these shows now hold a light to any of those back then.

Went to his shows , in 88 , 93 , 2005 and 2014 and he is still brilliant live and not boring to me.

His last appearance on The View was a total snooze fest. Those yellow pants and nothing really to say was painful to watch. Lotusflow3r was incredible. A few interesting tunes since then but unless you've seen him live over the past few years it's been a very boring time to be a Prince fan.

  1. His interviews. Prince, stop giving them. You don’t answer questions. You don’t reveal anything interesting. Just don’t do them. And, like Howard Stern said, you get talked to like a space alien—because you act like one.

This I agree with nod His interviews these days are so lackluster....just a bunch of cryptic talk, with no important details or interesting insight.Plus,he seems to complain/whine alot in these interviews.

Early 80's - Prince showing off that he could play all the instruments and write all the songs.

.

mid to late 80's - Prince showing off how diverse and ground breaking his music and songwriting is.

.

Early 90's - Prince showing off how gangsta and hip he could be.

.

Late 90's - Prince showing off how much money he has, how great he is and how many songs he has unreleased

.

Early 00's - Prince showing off how he can release music any way he wants and doesnt need a record company. He only needs Jehova.

.

Late 00's - Prince showing off how quickly and easily he can make music, no matter the quality.

.

Early 10's - Prince showing off how he doesnt need to release any music at all.

.

So, basically, Prince is a show off. But where the showing off was all about the music in his earlier career, it has slowly migrated to showing off how good he thinks he is and the music has taken 2nd stage.

.

Its all about "look at me and what I can do", as opposed to "listen to this and what it sounds like".

Yeah, I agree with this. Prince seems to be a show off and is constantly looking for confirmation how great and cool he is. He was a very small kid in his formative years, probably got bullied a bit with that, and had little self confidence as a HUMAN. As a MUSICIAN he had lots of confidence though, and he started to compensate for his personal insecurities by showing off with his music. This was great for the fans as the music was fierce, bold and funky. But in later years i feel he got distracted from the music and got consumed by other stuff like popularity, money, record contracts, JW faith, etc. And it showed in the quality of his new music.
---
I feel he still has quite a bit of that little, insecure young boy in him, and he is still looking for confirmation that he is C.O.O.L. In my opinion Prince really lost track after his WB feud, and the music suffered bigtime. I believe he should start focussing on the MUSIC again and not on projecting the image of a cool, rich pop star. Nothing would make him look more 'cool' than good quality new music at this point in his career IMHO. Prince yielded his biggest successes by using his new music to make him look cool, it would be perfect for the fans of his MUSIC if he would try that again!
---
End of rant, still love ya Prince... wink

Live shows have become boring.

Sampler sets?

Two or three shows a night?

Does not sound like aquality show to me.

The recent albums were soso.

I haven't played an actual Prince cd (bootleg or not) in a while.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

This is what happens when you follow an upredictable artist for a significant amount of time. Their unpredictability becomes predictable. My opinion of his current output aside, I'm amazed at his ability to maintain his "mystique" after all these years.

Complaints aside, I will take Prince's catalogue and live performance over any artist living or dead.

Pop music is becoming the all purpose, non purpose music of the ages.

what "mystique"?

"What's he really like? What makes him tick? Is he black or white? Is he straight or gay?" All these wielrd myths, stories and speculation about how eccentric he is and the reasons he does what he does. He's got that Howard Hughes thing going on.

.

Seriously, a certain element of mystery (mystique) is definitely one thing Prince has maintained over the years.

Yes... He is so played. That Essence cover is so laughable... And more importantly the guy is just stuck musically. I am stunned at how immature the lyrics are to his new music and the vocal arrangements to his songs are so clumsy

Breakfast can't wait LMBO.... All this bravado and delivering these bullshit lyric songs. His performance on Arsenio was downright embarrassing.

When the live performance is not there then you know it's time to just chill a minute

Prince has ruined his career and his legacy. He is going to need a ton of outside help to reclaim it. Otherwise an artist that should be universally recognized as a genius will be remembered for what he is to most right now.

A punch line

Rock andnroll love affair totally surprised me. It seemed to have a whole Neil Diamond vibe. And then the Kimmel performance, made the Neil diamond thing worse. It looked and sounded like a cross between Neil diamond and prince. It seem intentional as well....and somehow...through all of that... I STILL friggin love the song.
And even MORE surprising and engaging to me was this songs contrast to Screwdriver(remix)...like really?!?!?! That's the same fuckin dude? His ability to create STRONG efforts in such diverse styles and approaches still astounds me and is my most exciting and favorite aspect of his career too me.

Then theres fixurlifeup. A fail(a huge one) in my book...but still...an entirely different sound to the point I think then poor guy has a slight case of dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality). Still waiting, a beautiful night and endorphins machine all written by the same person....it appears to have mental illness written all over it to me.

Thanks for your post, interesting points. But he is an artist that often reinvents himself. He's musically very perceptive and can reflect many different styles that aren't his "own" I think plenty of leading psychologists believe it's not necessarily unhealthy or even faintly unusual for an individual to have many personalities. As long as there's one personality strong enough to take charge at any time when called for.

There are probably people posting plenty of annoying things left and right on this site. I could probably point to any number of examples of said "annoying things"...if I wasn't so busy ignoring them.

As if that makes them go away. You posted the meme of the mainstream. The sheeple.

The music needs a change. Any change. The show needs a change. A radical change.

Only then can he gain credibility.

The rehersal recording of "always in my hair" from Paisley with 3eg is hardly boring.

the clips from Europe with Bambi, C&C etc are AMAZING.

What or who is NOT boring on the scene right now?

One direction?

The latest Paul Mccartney tour?

c'mon, other than Neil Y who keeps it better?

At least McCartney made a really great record. So far I'm not hearing it here.
