The alternative camp is those of us who know who they are, and still don't care
Hugely overrated band. "Song 2" is quite good though, but a clear rip off of the Seattle Grunge sound, and I'd still take Nirvana's worst songs over it.
And ugh, "Country House" is one of the worst songs ever, by any band. Total shite. |

Haha yeah, I was just gonna say this. We pretty much take the piss out of anything that walks.
I like how this thread has just turned into a Prince v Blur thing Last time I checked it was Oasis v Blur (I have to say Oasis tho because I'm Northern).

It was poking fun at Prince antics-that's funny. Nothing serious here. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

I don't think it's funny because we know why Prince changed his name. It wasn't just weird behavior. I don't know who Blur is, are or were but really? Prince's music changed both Pop & RnB back in the 80's. They will never have the respect that he does. Prince will be remembered (ha, ha) so joke on that. We don't even know who the hell they are now!

There were several so-called "Britpop" bands in the Nineties that I liked quite a lot more than both. I remember buying Cast's debut album, which was a band fronted by John Power, formerly of The La's (of 'There She Goes' fame). I liked that record a lot better than anything by Oasis or Blur.
Suede was another band I preferred.
Largely though, the entire "Britpop" scene in the mid 90's was inferior to the British bands of the 80's. There's not a single Britpop album that I prefer to most of The Smiths' catalog, or Depeche Mode. |

Well I thought it was funny; Prince was way too po-faced around this time. Plus I love Blur.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've never really got all that into britpop, I've listented to both Oasis and Blur albums, but none have screamed out to me as being amazing. I find that I mostly listen to Oasis and the likes on really sunny days. They're what I like to call a 'summer band'. Same with the Stone Roses really, stormy weather aint stone roses weather.
I agree with you on that one as well, I'd much rather listen to a British band of the '80s rather than the '90s. When I listen to '90s music its usually early '90s 'madchester' rave music.

Blur were the first band I ever liked, back when I was 12 and as far as I knew prince was just this ridiculous figure releasing ballads about beautiful girls and diamonds and pearls.

You make Bart sound like someone i'd wanna drink with!
Literally everything you've ever written on here smacks of idiocy and someone who lives all alone with nothing but Buffy the Vampire dvds to keep you company. 3121

I know who they are, liked them at the time and don't care now - Prince was a hypocritical dick at the Brits, blur were perhaps disrespectful to him but the. Perhaps, like Jackson and Jarvis Cocker, he just needed to be brought down a peg or two...perhaps they saw how hypocritical he was being by attending and industry event, picking up an industry award that he didn't really deserve at that moment in time and then using his speech to moan about that industry. Who knows/cares...it was insignificant 20 years ago and more so now P-p-e-n-g-u-i-n......the P is silent

I think Prince went a little too far writing Slave on his face, historically speaking. Comparing what he was going through to actual slavery was immature and ignorant. . Prince made a conscious, well-informed (?) and lucritive deal that he then for his own reasons had second thoughts about. He should have maintained his professionalism, delivered on his agreed-upon contract and then gotten out when it was over. Instead, we got "Slave", contractual obligation cast-offs and years of label-hating rants. . To wrap it up: a grown man getting paid a ton of money to play music is not a slave. Good for Blur to poke a little fun at it.

"Song 2" was an ironic take on grunge, but the irony may be lost to some. --- Funny how New Mod On The Block says the comparison on this thread was Prince vs. Blur at the moment and not Albarn. Interesting, because... Blur doesn't exist!!! How can you compare Prince to a band that doesn't exist? --- On the other hand, it's perfectly fine not to know Blur, as some people claim, but being proud of one's ignorance, as others are, is rather silly, or probably stupid arrogance. Is it an American feature? I hope not... [Edited 8/19/14 7:11am]

^ hey Javi.. are you talking to/ about Militant, when you say "New Mod On The Block"..? aren't you a bit "condescending", or "disrespectful"..?

thedance, I didn't mean to be disrespectful, only to make a slight joke regarding someone who, no matter how huge his ignorance is, speaks always with silly teen overbearingness. --- And, as I said, I don't see the problem in disliking Blur. But some people on this thread seem to be proud of not knowing them, instead of showing an interest in what they haven't heard or at least shut up, since the discussion is related to a band unknown to them. Your posts are very funny. I'd rather continue reading them. Anyway, ignorance is the most powerful source of arrogance, and those who have both features aren't willing to listen.

I just seen it as Blur guys being silly and not a real jab at .
One of my friends opened for Blur on first American tour for the 1st album. They were one of the best acts, very loud, very drunk. Like seeing the Who play dives. The real deal! Confusion, drunk as fuck and not knowing where the hell they were in America. Extremely good band but indie art rock is not your thing move on. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Tell you what though they know how to do a good re-release - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blur_21 - if Prince even got half as good as this we'd be doing well

It would seem that Prince took the event in good humour. Along with the slave mimicking, Blur were reported to have thrown bread rolls at Prince as he sat at his table. However, later that night, Prince performed an aftershow/party. Blur tried to get in to the venue and were refused entry but handed a bag of bread rolls by security. Damon Albarn later said Prince was very funny (in reference to the night). This is what Dave Chappelle would call a 'prince judo move'.
