September 11. 1987 Paisley Park Studios officially opened in September, 1987. Owned and developed by Prince Rogers Nelson, the complex was designed for rehearsal, recording, and film and video production. Located about 30 minutes southwest of Minneapolis, this 10 million dollar, 55,000 sq. ft. facility is one of the top flight and historically important recording studios in the world. An influential star of the 1980s, Prince wrote and produced funky pop songs that had cross-genre appeal, including the best-sellers 1999, When Doves Cry, and Kiss. The son of a jazz pianist, he taught himself several instruments and formed his own bands as a teenager. At age 19 he released his first album, on which he played all the instruments. His second album, Prince, was followed by many others, including 1999, the soundtrack of the film Purple Rain, in which he also starred, and Diamonds and Pearls. He became known as something of an eccentric genius: he dressed in high heels and outrageous finery and was so multitalented that on many songs he played all the instruments himself.
The studios were designed by architect Brett Thoeny of Boto Design of Santa Monica, California and acoustician Marshall Long, working with local engineers in the Minneapolis area. Brett took the lead in studio layout and control room design while Marshall provided HVAC noise control, vibration isolation, room-to-room sound separation, and made contributions to the studio interiors.
The acoustical isolation design was particularly challenging since the sound stage is used to fly a full concert rig and play at concert levels while the other studios are in use. The facility includes four main studios. Studio A has an 80-track recording console, while Studio B has a 48-track console; Studio C is the smallest and most intimate, while the soundstage is over 12,000 square feet and is used for concerts, rehearsals, and video productions. Every room in Paisley Park is wired for sound to allow Prince to record wherever he likes.
The studios were closed in 1996 with only Prince and some of his friends continuing to record and perform there. In 2004 Paisley Park was reopened with the studio's editing and recording rooms having been newly digitized and upgraded. The numerous unreleased music and full length films and video work that are known to have been created in Paisley Park Studios are among the rarest of the Prince catalog on the Paisley Park record label. In 2004 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Regarding the outside, I think that's the whole point. It belies what's inside - like Dr Who's Tardis.

Paisley Park is like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. I watched a video of Peter Gabriel's studio grounds and it's like Noah's ark. 2 swans, 2 ducks. It's just different strokes for different folks. What?

An excellent thread by the way...hard to come up with one that hasn't been done around here. I'd say the question I've always wondered is how did he get it WB to fund it and why haven't more artist done the same? I guess I'm assuming that WB did indeed fund it or help finance it...either way I'd suspect it was a hell of a return on investment. 1 over Jordan...the greatest since

The first party I went to at Paisley Park in January 1992 was amazing. Prince had done a warm up show at Glam Slam for the Diamonds and Pearls tour. The party started around 2am. It was held in the atrium, lights down low, catered food, alcohol, DJ and blasting speakers. My friend and I were standing around and the elevator had come down from the uppler level. When the doors opened, it lit up the room and Prince came walking out in the outfit he wore for the Spin magazine cover/Insatiable video. I could have died. He came walking by and I said "hey Prince" and he smiled and said hello. He hung out where the DJ was playing and he gave him a CD. He played Sexy MF, My Name Is Prince, the Continental, and Damn U. Mind you, this was January 1992 and D&P had only been out for about 3 months. It was SO surreal. I saw Terrence Trent D'Arby sitting at a table in the kitchen area. Later in the night, we were all moved to a rehearsal area down the hall from the atrium, but not the soundstage. Prince and some of the NPG jammed until the sun came up. This was the party where TTD attempted to grab a guitar and play with them. It was like a dream come true. This was the first of MANY more unbelievable nights. TRUE BLUE

They've taken a lifetime lease I remember this virtual tour from a side. This fold out image of that square hallway. Shame the original site http://www.paisleyparkstudios.com/ has been closed, I think it was 'live' until a couple of years ago. I will check out a certain Q Magazine, or was it SKY, from 1987, it featured some pictures. One moment...

Plenty of artists have recording facilities - it's almost standard now. Private compounds aren't really unique either, and aesthetically speaking, I wouldn't call Paisley Park really state of the art, or high end, especially in this era of new development. What little we've seen has looked pretty meager, and dated, to me.

Isn't it interesting that when asked about their favorite Prince LPs everybody always mentions the 1980s albums that were recorded before he built his own studio? I just listened to Controversy again and I'm sure one of the reasons it is so good is because it was recorded in his basement studio without all the gadgets that would come later. As soon as Prince had his own studio, he started losing himself in studio trickery, like overloading his songs with sound effects. That said, it IS an amazing achievement that he was able to construct this and keep it running for all those years. But if it did his music any good... I'm not so sure...
