Oh right, this is true
maybe because the latter songs were more 'dancible' the missing bass means something |

I agree. They're had been a good number of pop hits which contained rhythm tracks with no bass parts ("Strawberry Fields Forever" is one example). Historically speaking, what made "Doves" so noteworthy was it was dance hit with a funky rhythm track containing no bass parts. The harmonies are implied as they are rootless. Pretty much unheard of in dance music up to that point. After it became a classic, many r&b tracks particular in the 90s featured bass-less rhythm tracks.

The bass part on "For You" is performed with human voice. But on the same album we find "Crazy You" which has no bass part! |

Paisley Park has no bass either.
That song would really be better, in my opinion, with a melodic bass line. I think that whenever I hear it these days. |

If Mindbells is indicating there is no bass part in the song "Paisley Park", he/she would be correct. |

As it stands When Doves Cry is flawless. I DO NOT want to hear the version with bass. It would ruin it for me. The best thing Prince was leaving the bass off. The song is really busy it is not need anything else. At the risk of being hated some other songs from that era would have been better with less. |
