Purple Rain Workprint There have been a few threads in the past about the workprint version of Purple Rain, but I want to know just HOW exactly is it different than the released version? I know there's no barn-sex scene or Morris & Apples running from Prince's house, so I wanna know what in the workprint version is interesting/different? . It's also low-quality, but I'm really curious about it... [No hinting for it - luv4u] Maybe do, just not like did before

I had it a few years ago and lost it when my computer crashed. It's not what you think, but from what I remember the Lake Minatonka scene is longer with more(different) dialogue. The scene with the ankle bracelet is also longer. The scene with Prince slapping Apollonia in the basement has different dialogue. There was no cuts of Morris and Apollonia running away from Prince's house or the warehouse where Prince fights The Time. And no, there is no sex scene in the barn. __________________________________________________

I don't remember any significant dialogue changes, some scenes were a few seconds longer, but it's been a long time since I watched it. The quality is quite poor. A couple extra lines in the Lake Minnetonka scene, yeah. |

Too bad Hollywood is so retrictive on releasing deleted scenes with the movie on home video for sale to the public. Imagine if they could invent some technology that would allow you to watch different edits of films, outtakes, deleted scenes, documentaries, etc. Then any movie could retail with bonus features and such. I mean for Purple Rain fans that would just be a godsend or something. Yeah too bad it's 2014, and there is still no legit way to trade our cash for the various outtakes we've only seen glimpses of over the last 30 years.

I wish I could've participated in the Q&A session with Albert Magnoli. Someone asked about the (mythical?) X-rated version of PR but I would've asked about scenes that were cut that he wished he could've kept in.

Slightly off topic, but back in 1989-90 a girl I worked with said she participated in a test screening of Under The Cherry Moon. She said in the test-screening, Prince's character did not die. She couldn't remember much else. She liked prince but wasn't big into him. She wasn't trying to impress me, just we got on the subject of prince and she mentioned it in passing. . Thought there was more to it than that, but being a huge Purple Rain nut, that's a must-watch (not asking for it, just stating that it sounds interesting) Maybe do, just not like did before

. I think Apollonia said in an interview that the sex scene was never filmed. Unusual, because that clip of her rubbing her boobies while straddling P is circulating... I guess they filmed sexual acts but not the actual sex scenes themselves..? . I'm hoping that the cut scenes weren't discarded... Ik the movie had to be trimmed down for its final release, but fans should be able to watch the cut scenes by now 30 yrs later Maybe do, just not like did before

I've heard this too about test screenings being different from the actual release. Makes you wish that it was all just released in a box set and it wasn't so hidden/confusing. On a related note, do the Workprint scenes follow the original Purple Rain script? Maybe do, just not like did before

The workprint pretty much follows what you see in the movie.
The scene in the basement when Prince tackles his dad to help his mom in the movie is from the workprint. If you notice, it's a helluva lot darker than the scenes before and after it. It was mentioned in the 20th anniversary commentary that they somehow lost the footage for that scene and had to splice in the workprint. __________________________________________________

If the director says the scenes are gone, then there's no chance of ever seeing them Always thought there was hope to see em sometime in the future..
Edit: Wonder why nobody really seems to bring it up that the director supposedly confirmed the scenes' deletion in 2004, when they're talking about wanting to see the deleted scenes.... is there still a chance they exist, or. [Edited 8/12/14 12:24pm] Maybe do, just not like did before

Probably because Albert Magnoli never confirmed (in a commentary or any other place) that the scenes were destroyed or discarded. The only mention of certain scenes for this film being "lost forever" was during the "the matter with this house" sequence in which the film lab lost the camera negative for those shots.
But hey, if anyone can provide a reference point in the commentary or a direct quote from Mr. Magnoli, I'm prepared to have my heart broken. [Edited 8/12/14 12:56pm]

If we know Prince, I'm sure he has a print of all footage filmed for Purple Rain in his own personal collection locked in the vault. __________________________________________________
