I'm not sure what your age is but the longer you live, the more you will see how "post-racial" America isn't the utopia that it's cut out to be, especially during difficult economic times. Wait and see... Trolls be gone!

For as long as I can remember, the Stones have been very clear about who they were influenced by. No James Brown and no Little Richard would have meant no Mick Jagger. I think it fitting that he would push to get an excellent movie about Brown made. The scene between James Brown an Little Richard alone was fantastic. I am all for this movie. Philmoreliz

Do any of you remember that news story that came out about 2-3 years ago about the Ivy League school that had just returned the stolen artifacts it took from some tribal folks in Peru? I think it was Yale. Anyway, they basically held on to stolen artifacts for 100 years and because of mounting pressure from the tribe (and possibly the Peruvian government), they finally got it back.
For some reason, this discussion reminded me of that news story... Trolls be gone!

And now Mick Jagger is showing his respect to James Brown through this move. What more do you want? Music is a criss-cross of influences and does not belong to one particular racial or cultural group. I now I have put all the energy in this discussion that I wanted as well. Peace! Be wild! If everything belongs to everyone, why aren't more black folks the CEOs of corporations, banks, the U.S. Senate, Private Government Contractors, etc.? But, when it comes to what black people "have" (to put it loosely), it's a free for all.....Yeah that sounds pretty consistent with history. Exploit the wealth of others to enrich yourself....that's America. Trolls be gone!

You guys got a black president for crying out loud!!!

Here's an analogy:
A few weeks ago, we had the NFL Hall of Fame ceremony. I don't recall the exact number of inductees but let's say it's about 8-10.
Now, if you count up the number of kids that play Pee Wee league all the way up to those who actually make the NFL, that's probably several million men. Out of those several million men, only 10 or so each year are inducted. So, the overwhelming majority of boys and men who ever take one snap in football will never reach the status of the NFL Hall of Famers....
So, "you guys" don't always win because "one guy" wins.
I had a feeling you were going to say the whole bit about a black President (who buy the way is being sued by the House). Have you ever heard of undermining, political stalwarting or symbolic post-racialism? I doubt it, based on what you wrote.
Happy trails, culture vultures!
Let's keep the convo back on topic. James Brown entertained the world but he belongs to black America. I'm sure the Rolling Stones are not going to pretend to be American just because they have lots of fans here so why should we erase James Brown's cultural ties to black America? WE are the ones who collectively kept his career alive once white America got pissed off at his pro-black music.
But, denial is the first step in controlling the dialogue about race, so none of these denial tactics and whatnot erases the reality that this has and will continue to happen throughout history. Why can't you accept it? Why must it always be a figment of the imagination of those who have their culture hijacked?
Okay, I'm done here. But, you seem like the type who has to have the last word, so be my guest. [Edited 8/10/14 10:41am] Trolls be gone!

Naw, he ain't by racial anymore, they call him the N-word as much as they do any other black person People only say he's bi-racial when they want to prove a point that his blackness isn't as real as the next person. Should we call his kids 1/4 white? Doubt it!
When it comes to racial identity in America, whatever the cops and cab drivers think you are, that's it Trolls be gone!

When it comes to racial identity in America, whatever the cops and cab drivers think you are, that's it Right. That's more-or-less what I was getting at. The assertion that he's black and he's the president supports an arguement against the perpetuation of white supremecy. It's a card played by folks who want to take a blind eyes view toward the everyday realities of the majority of black people. "You guys got a black president, so everthing must be hunky dory for black folks now, right?" Pointing out that he's a biracial Havard graduate damages the foundation of that assertion so generally that card is played during a different hand (so to speak) if played at all. *edit: You know, I should really apologize. Attempts have been made to steer this thread back on topic, and partially through my own doing, we've managed to veer off topic again. Perhaps a thread in the P&R forum is indeed a more appropriate space for the continuance. Sorry for hijacking, folks. [Edited 8/10/14 12:38pm]

I agree with what you wrote here and I think it's relevant to the discussion at hand. Before James Brown sang, "I'm Black and I'm Proud", he was a non-threatening entertainer who was in a comfortable place for many whites. When that song came out, it was "game over" for James Brown in white America. Most of the time when you hear people talk about James Brown, they are talking about his hits prior to 1968 or Living in America from the 80s. They pass over an entire decade or so, for a reason. James Brown never tried to "assimilate" (whatever that means) and he didn't mince his words.
I think the same can be said about what you were writing. Obama, like many black Americans, has European ancestry. His children have European ancestry but I seriously doubt any white person in the world would look at his children and call them "white". Obama's wife, his black children and the vitriol aimed at him reaffirm how black he is, if you ask me. The same can be said for James Brown, when he made songs that SHOWED what was already there, he was off the map for white America. Trolls be gone!

That's a really interesting article. I wonder if analysis and the one that I think Shadow & Act website did will have any impact on Hollywood. Also... The OP post and others that quoted it in full are unfortunately ILLEGAL. People aren't allowed to copy an entire article from a commercial site (or most sites in general) and paste it onto another site. This is copyright infringement. Why do I care? Online publications need visits (hits) to (1) justify using a particular writer again and (2) earn income to stay in business. So if you like an article, please just copy 2 paragraphs or so and then include a like link to the original. OP or mods, can you please edit the first post to be just 2 paragraphs and fix the HuffPo link to a live link? Mods, can you also edit the replies that similarly quote the full article?
