Okay, maybe people "out there" don't love the song, but is it the one anyone "in here" skipped? I was mainly listening on vinyl back in the day (now I generally hear Purple Rain tracks when they pop up in a shuffle--I can't remember the last time I listened to the album), so I wasn't skipping anything, but I generally arrange errands out of the room during "Take Me With U"--certainly not during "Computer Blue."

People who skip songs don't even like music in the first place, listening to music is just a minor hobbie to them.

I'm not sure--if we assume that "the work" in question is an album, okay--you should listen to the whole thing (in general--but I certainly understanding choosing sometimes to listen to a particular song rather than the whole, much as I sometimes read a particular passage of a longer work (prose or verse) rather than the entirety.

But in the case of pop music in general (and Prince in particular), "the work" is often, really, the single song. The album remained what it originally was--a collection of disparate pieces. Yes, with some artists (some of the time) the context within an album might really mean something--but not always, or even most of the time. Albums were a marketing related structure--and for most pop probably never really much more than that. Individual song downloads let it move back to its individual song-based roots, but actually improved on that, in some ways--since filler sometimes isn't filler for all listeners, and you can pick and choose even from those old hodge-podges that we formerly had to pretend were actual unified works (and the fact is that many artists do record filler--but the pressure is less if we junk the idea that you have to do albums).

Even with Prince, many songs were created separate from the context of the album (in many cases), only finding a final resting place on an album after extended existence separate from that. The fact that some long-unreleased tracks might finally receive an album release doesn't mean that they necessarily "belong" there in some significant way. The fact that I can listen to a great pop track (originally built for the radio or for some other listening experience, like a dance floor) in my home as part of a collection of tracks by the same artist doesn't mean that's the only legitimate to hear them. It might not even be the most legitimate way--is a dance track in its proper environment playing in my bedroom, or in the club it was designed for?

In the late 90's I was stuck in traffic, and I was blasting Purple Rain in my car. Computer Blue was playing and it was loud. There were some road workers near the car, and when the Father's Song bit came on they dropped their shovels and all started dancing.

I think it's arguable that Computer Blue and The Beautiful Ones are Prince at his most inspired.

There are Prince songs I like better, there are other songs where his utter genius is on display, but the emotion, the songcraft, the inspiration, the energy, everything about those songs is just magical.

I know they wanted the album to be more true to form for the movie, but I think it could have included at least the 7min edit. Darling Nikki was the backward speech piece and that's not in the movie, and Purple Rain is last on the album vs in the movie, so they should have allowed at least 7min

This is actually how I feel NOW--if I were to plan to listen to it, I'd choose one of the extended ones (with hallway speech). But I just don't understand the idea of the song somehow being the weak cut on the album (even if the album version is relatively weak in comparison to the full version).

I suspect that anyone who thought the short one was weak in '84 when they were listening to the album would probably find the long one even more over-the-top (and not in a good way).
