Bruno Mars is definitely talented, but he has ALOT more people involved making his music than Prince does/did. He doesn't write/play/produce the bulk of his stuff without some kind of help. He is more like MJ in that regard.

Search Wikipedia: Unorthodox Jukebox. Then notice the army of people involved in making Bruno's hit record.

Also, Bruno is nearly 30. Compare his career now to what Prince had done in the same amount of time. Bruno hasn't nearly had the impact that Prince did at the same point in his career. So let's revisit this silliness in 20 to 30 years.

Again, I like Bruno a lot. I bought his albums. However, he hasn't really innovated anything or broken new ground like Prince has. He's basically reheating up old soul revue style concerts (without really even putting a new spin on it) and serving leftovers to a (kinda unnappreciative) audience.

I was going to make that point, but you beat me to the punch, his albums are way more collaborative efforts than Prince has ever done. Prince's working style a lot of times is much more "this is my vision, play this like this", unless a song evolves from a jamming session, in which case the other musicians do in fact contribute to a composition, but Prince has such strong ideas (and a strong personality) that its really him guiding what ends up on a song and what doesnt. Bruno has at minimum 3 producers on a song (especially on the last album), sometimes more.

Those are interesting points and I think this issue was brought up on another thread when we were discussing the greatest artists of all time. I was wondering if we measure an artist on how much creative control they have or if we measure them by performance. The thing about Prince is that he was his own machine for the most part and he also happened to be an electrifying musician/performer. If we took away all of Bruno's producers, etc., I still think his output would be good and he'd let loose a bit on how his "sound" would be put forth to the masses. But, I think most would agree that Bruno has kind of re-introduced this notion of playing instruments, writing a song and being liked by many different kinds of people from all backgrounds.
Bruno already has a successful career going - Prince
doesn't need to give him a little boost.
I doubt Prince is going to make a public statement of
admiration of Mars if that is what you are looking for.
Yeah it's interesting that he goes on the record for any other young artist that shows some sort of musicianship and prowess on the stage. But, who knows, maybe Prince could be slightly jealous of the short, light-skinned exotic dude who does the James Brown splits

If you'll notice, any other young artist he goes on the record for happened to have breasts and a va-jayjay.

Oh come on! Prince likes Cee-Lo Green, Common and The Roots....NEXT! We ain't talking about no proteges here

Are we sure Bruno doesn't?
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Yes its clear that idea is your private joy.
You think I'm bad? I'm waiting for Naughty Kitty to get here

It is a great question. People often mean different things when they discuss greatness. When Prince departs us he'll be remembered for both performance, musical talent, genre innovation (creativity)/impact on contemporary music, impact on the music industry itself (the business side of it), and popularity.. so its kind of wide ranging. Bruno's young so he still has time to do a lot, but I think he'll probably make a name for himself with performance and potentially (if things continue to go the way they're going for him) with popularity. I dont see him making a name for himself through stellar mastery of an instrument or genre innovation or business innovation.. but who knows, anything's possible I guess.

You ain't right! Yeah, he might seem girly but he's got what appears to be some potentially deadly pipe-laying skills. Geez, I remember when Prince used to love showing his junk back and forth on stage!

I'm not a drummer but for those of you who are/were, what you do you think about Bruno's drumming compared to Prince's drumming? What do you think Prince thinks of Bruno's drumming skills? I wonder what Prince's face looked like after he saw this Here's a short clip of Bruno drumming.
Yeah, the name was familiar, I'd heard it, but I didn't have a clue who that guy was or what he was doing...
Yeah you probably heard the name, saw the face and heard the music but didn't make the connection. That happens sometimes
No I checked his vids on YT and I was absolutely unfamiliar with his face and his music, I really had just caught his name as being a celebrity name probably because he was named in passing here or there but that's all. Not the first time: I remember I learned who Lady Gaga was about 6 months after every one else back in 2009. The girlfriend who told me about her back then was like "whaaaaaaat the fuuuuuuuck? U don't know who Lady gaga is? The whole planet knows that!!!"
Thing is that for one thing I live in India, and even when I was in France it was kinda the same anyway cuz I don't really watch TV, I don't listen to the radio and I mostly listen to indie/alternative music, so sometimes I'm totally clueless when it comes to those things

Oh, don't worry, that happens sometimes Sometimes avoiding the media can be a good thing
He's still got a long way to go but I think he has a lot up his sleeve. He's got to make the record label happy by putting out catchy pop tunes, however, homeboy has a lot of amazing stuff that doesn't get radio airplay. He's got the chops and sex appeal for R&B music, so I think he will branch out and away from pop. Will he make a song like 17 Days? Well, no one but Prince can do that but the best is yet to come with Bruno I think.
Why didnt you tell me you made this thread? You know how I found out about this thread? On Google! Anyways my on what Prince thinks of Bruno? Of course I dont know what goes on in his mind but I would guess he thinks Bruno is very talented and appreciates his playing live music with a real band and that he's all about the music and no gimmicks. He may even see a bit of himself when he was younger in Bruno--the passion and hunger he has for music. I dont see how he could NOT be impressed with his SB performance--even if he wont say it...cuz Bruno slayed and impressed EVERYBODY that night!
As to why he hasnt publicly acknowledged Bruno or worked with him like he has w/Esperanza or Janelle? I think one of the reasons is cuz Bruno is a guy...now if he were a girl, Prince would have been collaborated with him by now cuz we know Prince luvs the ladies! But the other reason why he hasnt I think goes along with some of the other opinions offered here....I wouldnt say that Prince is jealous or threatened by Bruno, but I think that maybe Bruno being so gifted/talented and possibly reminding Prince a bit of himself in his younger years may have gotten in his feelings and maybe he is slightly envious...feeling that even giving him a little props will put more focus on Bruno and less focus on him. (I can just see the headline: "Prince is a fan of Bruno Mars!")
A note about Bruno's songwriting...he is both a songwriter and a producer. He is part of a production team called The Smeezingtons which is Bruno, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine. Along with working on Bruno's albums they have wrote and produced songs for a lot of other artists--they co-wrote Cee-lo's F*** You hit. Bruno did seek out other producers as well to work on his Unorthodox Jukebox album because he was experimenting with different sounds. His approach to songwriting and producing is more collaborative than Prince who does everything himself--that's mainly due to their personal preferences and personalities. Regardless of their approach both have produced major hits. Locked Out of Heaven, Just The Way You Are are classics as are Purple Rain and 1999. Although Prince has achieved more than Bruno, Bruno is still growing as an artist and I look forward to seeing the kind of work he will produce 5, 10+ years from now. He will be around for a long time like Prince has been
In this video Bruno talks about Prince alongside Janelle
I think the reason Prince hasnt shown any intrest (yet) in Bruno is because Bruno is a male. The second reason, maybe Bruno's music isn't P's cup of tea, or he just thinks he's too popular to stick with as Prince always befriends indie/non-mainstream artists.
I'm sure though that Bruno WOULD DIE to meet Prince, he's one of two iconcs he grew up idolising, MJ died and Bruno never had a chance to meet him... Let's hope this isn't gonna happen with P.
Though, there was several occasions where P could've talked about Bruno, they both appeared at the 2014 Brit Awards, at the 2013 Billboard Awards, at The Grammys... So I think it's about P.

Thanks for posting these, Shawy! Well, if this doesn't just scream "Prince let me touch the hem of your garment" then nothing does Seems like Bruno has a serious thing for Prince and almost put Janelle on blast because she doesn't bring him along to Prince events, LOL. I am pretty sure Janelle has probably asked Prince but Prince is the one saying no. Seems like Bruno's gonna be on Prince's purple jock until he finally meets him!

Totally! I sometimes wonder how Bruno would react if Prince ever invited him over to a jam session with him. I wonder if he would be able to keep it together and rock out with Prince or if he would totally lose it and freak out or have a meltdown or turn into the biggest fanboy But those two jamming together would freakin rock! OMG the epic-ness of it all, can you just imagine?

My vote is Bruno has a meltdown and then plants a tongue kiss on Prince lol
i doubt P thinks about bruno mars at all. bruno's music is absolute dreck, and i say that without hesitating even a heartbeat. really some of the most stale, lifeless pop music i've heard in ages. it's truly some terrible, terrible stuff. terrible maybe in the fact that it just truly has zero personality, creativity, or genuine artistic compositional interest, not that the musicianship or singing is technically bad. it's bad because it completely inoffensive: it doesn't take any risks. you could fall asleep to this stuff.. his music is shiny, polished, overproduced, modern and completely lifeless and hollow. comparing P to this pop singer is a massive insult to P.
.
i really, really do not think that P cares an iota about Bruno. he doesn't view him as competition, because he isn't.
