Prince an d Bilal

I know this may have been discussed before, but aside from the obvious of Bilal trying to sing a falsetto like Prince, has anyone ever noticed other techniques he's picked up from the Purple One? Don't get me wrong, I think Bilal can sing, but try to get an identity of your own. For instance, I've read where he requests certain flowers to go on his stages before he performs (much like Prince during the Purple Rain days). I've also seen him take his mic off of the stand with the holder still attached to it like Prince. And not to mention that I'm sure he was the first one to jump at the offer of singing on Common's song, *69 (w/ Prince...supposedly) with that wack-ass Linn Drum "tribute" to him at the end. Like I said, I can understand him wanting to pay hommage to one of his influences, but try to come into an identity of your own.

I think he has his own identity, but definately has roots with little man... and what's wrong with that?? Have you heard his albumn? I think he has very original songs, such that many people think his material is "not commercial" enough... Sounds familiar, but he is very passionate live and I think he is off to a great start... personally.

Like I said, I don't think anything is wrong with paying hommage to Prince...that's cool. I just haven't really seen him develop into his own persona yet and maybe that's because he isn't being marketed the right way. I actually bought Bilal's album (even had it burned before it hit the streets). I think the only difference between he and Prince is that Bilal has a more husky voice and can really growl and gut-belly like a gospel singer.

Flashback 1984. Prince at the peak of his career dresses in ruffles and psychedelic clothing. The band members at this time were auditioned to fit his multi-racial and cross gender band while pumping out song after song about love, life and happiness. Sound familiar? *cough* Sly *cough*
*cough*

Lighten up. Puleease.

In fairness it is only his first album.
This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

when bilal uses his falsetto it sometimes sounds similar to prince. okay. and maybe the other similarity is that bilal too doesn't give a shit what others think of him when onstage. besides that, bilal does his own thing imo.
and that shit about requesting flowers and holding mics is pretty stupid imho. btw, who'd you think made that "wack-ass linn drum tribute"??
don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain
i'm high, so high

Right, as with D'Angelo he get's this "Prince biter" tag but there's only a couple of songs which show blatant Prince influence besides their occasional vocal styles. Give them credit on their own thing...
