I don't have any high expectations of this PR remaster since I know how Prince is, the best thing is to just wait and see if it gets released Welcome 2 The Dawn |

You might be right. I'm trying to recall from memory what was on the Crystal Ball set for which I already had "rough" mixes. One that comes to mind is "Movie Star". I can't really say there's a big difference between the old/new versions, but I do have only the Crystal Ball version on my iPhone.
I can tell you one thing I hear in "Movie Star" on Crystal Ball that I don't hear in the original: A pointless sample of a 1996 song, "Jam of The Year." Really stupid...almost as stupid as ruining the wonderful original version of "Joy In Repetition" with that stupid segue from Eye No to Alphabet St..which in Prince's mind was so awesome it just HAD to be used again. |

The Jam Of The Year-sample is at the beginning and you can edit it out, luckily. But I don't mind it. What I do mind is that Moviestar doesn't segue into A Place In Heaven... (with Prince on vocals and not Lisa, please pretty please)
Not having the great Joy In Repetition beginning (and end, except for the cassette version...) is definitely a crime. Stop the Prince Apologists ™ |

Prince is SMARTER that you. He only announced the Purple Rain Remaster to get the public's attention focused on his hot new Rita O'rielly single, Breakfast Can't Wait.. I mean The Breakup, or was it This Some BS from his new Prince album, I mean 3EG album... I mean attention for his new line of Purple Rain dishes?!? Or was it 3EG dishes? Look the point is Prince announced the Purple Rain remaster to get your fucking attention, because he's a legend and a fucking genius, ya' know, and now that he's 'clean' he has no other way to get money from your filthy-minded azz.. but now that he's got it, well, he's going to do something with it... eventually.. but either way he couldn't give 2 shits about a Purple Rain remaster because he doesn't look back... and just maybe he doesn't want the ghost of Purple Rain outshining all his new shit, I mean stuff, no cuss.. *sigh*

I don't get this obsessing over remasters. I already have those songs and they sound just fine through all the systems I have.
Do you think you're going to hear some bass line or guitar part you've never heard before?
Why yes, you might.
The unreleased stuff you've heard are almost exclusively rough mixes passed out on cassettes to various people for various reasons. Miles Davis was offered a cassette rough mix for something they were working on and he decided he just wanted to hold up a tape recorder in the air.
My point is, if rough mixes are made for musicians to learn and then come in a play a part, (or for Prince to drive around and listen to) then in most cases they are probably not finished. He may have added parts later, had some parts muted when making the rough mix, etc.
While there may NOT be new parts, the probability is high that there are parts you've never heard. It's been said countless times that Prince records a ton of tracks and then starts muting tracks that aren't needed in the mixing process. We've most likely never heard final mixes on any of these and I'd say the odds are about equal that you'll hear both new parts, (old but muted in the rough mixes) and old parts you're used to hearing muted.
You might be right. I'm trying to recall from memory what was on the Crystal Ball set for which I already had "rough" mixes. One that comes to mind is "Movie Star". I can't really say there's a big difference between the old/new versions, but I do have only the Crystal Ball version on my iPhone.
'Ultimate' had extended mixes also for the general p fans that had no access to bootlegs |

The other day I was playing Prince at work from my iPod. My co-workers requested another artist due to the inconsistencies in sound quality from one shuffled track to the next, mainly meaning that the older, unremastered tracks sound like crap. We'd be grooving pleasantly to Take Me With U then all jump in shock at the beginning of a gem like Ol Skool Company at jet engine decibels higher. Its an odd paradigm as the newer, less interesting tracks sound better on devices than the classic, amazing tracks.
Exactly, what's the fuss? We have and love the album, we have the extended verions, remixes, b-sides, associated artists songs, live versions, boots. We can configure them to suit ourselves.
Plus I dont know what you were listening to your msuic on but I had the same issue until I went into my music library > edit > prferences > playback > tick the box that says 'sound check - automatically adjusts songs to play at same volume level' that stopped all the jolting when a new and louder song started. |

Does seem sensible though. Release it in the bild up to christmas, aim at those customers that might grab it as a sticking filler. November seems right to me if they want to maximise sales. They aren't selling to us lot of impatient mofos that hang out here.

TurnItUp, I have it on good authority that Prince has burnt the masters for his first five albums, and that after Purple Rain he will release a single New Master Compilation-album of re-recorded Jehovah-approved songs from For You, Prince, Dirty Mind (only Gotta Broken Heart Again probably), Controversy and 1999.
Yes, there will be bonustracks, but these are 30 second snippets of the various master tapes burning on a huge pile outside Paisley Park.
It is not known yet what he plans to do with the masters post-Purple Rain

Well, SOMEBODY, at Billboard, at Warners, or (LE GASP!) Prince's people fucked up and got folks up in arms for nothing by saying this...
"As part of the deal, Prince's classic "Purple Rain" album will be re-released in a remastered deluxe version in time for the 30th anniversary of the album and movie. Other planned re-issue projects will follow and Prince will issue a new album too, although it is unclear if that title is a part of the deal."

Nobodys stopping you from complaining.
Complain all you want it still won't change the
fact that no release date has been announced.
WB said it would coincide with the anniversary.

November ,October - just don't bet on anything

By waiting until the hollidays with PR remeaster feels like WB and Prince is grasping at straws, I find it hard to belive it will sell better in November. The only possible way PR remaster might had a chance to boost sales was during the hype this summer. And Prince himself seems more focused on his new(old) album PE which at this point still hasn't any release date. But lets hope for a miracle and that Im proven wrong in oct-nov. Things never runs smoothly with Prince but its always intresting to follow his moves Welcome 2 The Dawn |

I get that, but I've always felt that the new stuff was recorded too loud. So the old stuff wouldn't need to be remastered - the new stuff needs to be UNmastered, LOL.
Someone posted a great chart showing how Prince's stuff has been recorded louder and louder and louder over the years.
Let's face it. He's recording louder and louder because his fans are getting older and older.
Nothings ever been recorded louder, its just mastered louder, something that became a trend for most artists beginning in the mid 90s. The original prince cds of the 80s are not good sounding but if they are maximized then they will officially be a failure.
I do not own all unreleased material from the era so I'm in the crowd hoping that the remasters are actually going to be a thing. Its hope filled with great doubt. |

Prince orger "Chick" had a pretty credible post about it being around November, if it's released. I think it was in the thread showing a release date poster in some wrecka stow. I'm just holding on 2 hope for November, (particularly the 4th day of November). Anyway, if we hear nothing by then, then it's safe 2 expect the worse.
