So lets talk Prince, What genre has the public specified him as? So I am back again with YET AGAIN another Prince thread. This is a sincere question. And this question is all about Princes success in taking over each genre of music; BUT yet it seems like EACH crowd specifes him to be a certain way. I wanna know what PRINCES genres are? As in the official crowd he plays for...orIf he plays for one at all.
He seems to play what he wants to hear. AND so far he hasn't truly failed us; but I MUST know
Is Prince pop, rock, funk, jazz, contemp?
Is he a Pop artist STILL, or has he moved on?
the black folks percevies him to be FUNK
What is he??
I think he is a funk artist.
How about you my sweet dears?

This is tough, but i think most of the general public consider him 80s era pop. We know better, as he's rock punk jazz funk soul the list goes on. Minneapolis sound has their own sub-genre But if you're anything like me I consider prince and all his artists their own genre: prince. Lol

It's such a singular mash-up of genres across his body of work. I have a Music folder on my hdd with many subfolders of different artists and next to that I have a Prince folder. Chili Sauce.

Why do you feel the need to pigeonhole Prince's music? I don't see the benefit.

Funny thing, in a record store (the ones that are still there), you always find yourself looking for the Prince section: is it under "soul" or "pop"? I don't think anyone ever found out

80's new wave mostly
probably some people consider him rnb and funk
nobody considers him a rap jazz country reggae or strait rock artist .. especially not people who listen to those genres

Limousine music Most people probably don't know the breadth of his style but would probably lump him in rock/pop category. Back when there were record stores that's where you would find his stuff "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I think most people consider him a funk artist. I would happily accept that he's one of the most versatile musicians and I wouldn't place him under a specific genre. --- However, on Spanish record shops (because both things do exist, Spain and record shops, though probably not for long) it isn't clear where to find the old man. He can be on pop/rock, he can be on soul/funk. That ambivalence is always a good thing, of course.

This is a different subject, but you made me curious: you think Spain won't exist for long?! I know about the Basques and Catalonya, but...this is new to me, compadre!

Let's start a new category for Prince by the Org. called Fusion! Prince is capable of playing just about any musical genre, he is music, so why not label him as such. __________________________________________________

He's classed as Pop/Rock in many magazines, websites, record stores etc.
For me, he's Rock/Pop/Funk/Soul/Jazz and that's what he is in my iTunes library, at least. He's a mix of all those in his musical output - even in a single track and most of his albums cover all these genres. these are the days of wild........

Well, we have almost 30% of the population unemployed and the Catalans are pushing hard to leave. But I feel more optimist today: Spain will resist! We may even see a Prince remaster before Spain disappears.

But it's all very easy for me to say this, because I live in a small country where everybody speaks the same language.

You forgot to put jazz in quotation marks. What is "jazz" anyway? Rock and roll is just jazz with a hard backbeat- Keith Richards.

[Edited 7/28/14 11:30am] Seriously - the number of people who stopped to ask what we were queuing for during the Hit N Run shows earlier in the year and then said "is he still going?", " THE Prince from the 80s, is he doing a comeback ?", "has he done anything since TMBGITW?", "I thought he'd died". Same response from my colleagues when I booked tickets for the May gigs P-p-e-n-g-u-i-n......the P is silent

Yeah, the "disappear" thing is just a way of talking, related also to the huge economic and social crisis. Anyway, I don't think Catalonia will leave, but they'll surely gain more political autonomy in the process.

Maybe the whole concept of the "nation state" will have to be put to rest in this globalizing world anyway. Because it really is a concept dating back to the French Revolution and Napoleon. Before that, people felt more connected to their home region and/or family. So maybe we can evolve into a Europe of regions rather than nations, which is, as I said, a made up concept. Think of all the harm this concept caused in Africa, Russia and China. But I'm afraid I'm drifting very much off-topic here.... [Edited 7/28/14 13:59pm]

most people are just ignorant(i mean that sincerely).they will put him in R&B because he is black. that's how basic public perception is. I would find robin thicke, timberlake and amy winehouse in the pop section and was like huh? or find lenny kravitz and saul williams in R&B/soul. i think most people (where I am from anyway) look at him as both r&b and rock. in these parts he is well respected for his tight grooves and his guitar playing.and i'm in a rural area. even rednecks love him.
