The Hat (3rdeyegirl tweet) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMj_P_6H69g&feature=youtu.be
After watching this I felt I honestly understood what this girl was saying (I'm sorry I've never heard of her) BUT I really can't see how it applies to Prince. . First - Amanda Palmer spends time with her fans after each gig, chatting to them, connecting with them, even sleeping on their sofas etc... I've never known Prince chat happily and freely to fans, very few will ever get to meet him unless they're very lucky & even when the fans were allowed on stage at the concerts it was carefully managed so there was no contact with the great man himself. . So if Prince asked me to pay for his music then Yes - I would pay BUT judging by the amount of people on this site that think his new stuff is doomed then plenty wouldn't. If Amanda Palmer is an inspiration to Prince as someone who did it and for whom it worked then he needs to take note of how far she goes to connect with the fans. Sometimes I think Prince does what Prince wants and doesn't care about the fans eagerly waiting.

WOW....I need to check out her stuff. Thanks for that .
Anyways...I guess we now know why after each listening party he's asked if they would pay for his music. Makes sense now

i'd travel from another planet to pay to see prince just act like a statue and hand out flowers. i might draw the line at drawing on him though. seriously, it would be interesting to see how he would evolve her ideas, thanks for mentioning her purple rain performance, will have to check her out. i think the majority of people are positive about prince's future music, just positivity is quiet sometimes. flowing through the veins of the tree of life...purplemaplesyrup

just positivity is quiet sometimes.[/quote] Nice. "We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. . I really like the idea of being able to access the music for free and contribute what we think is fair for the artist. However, I am fairly choosy about the music I buy or download. Many people I know download hours and hours worth of music just because they can & because its free. I don't think they would contribute because thats not what they do - they don't buy music. .
I think despite the negativity Prince fans would pay, but would the wider circle? I don't know? It could be revolutionary or it could be a massive disaster but I don't suppose there's a way to find out without trying. I can see people saying "he's got enough money already, why should I give him more when I'm struggling to pay the bills" .
I do actually think Prince tries to give to his fans, but sometimes what he gives can be more frustrating than he maybe thinks. 36 seconds of song was welcomed but frustrating at the same time. Concerts at a moments notice are exhilerating (if you get there) but when you're trying to juggle work, kids etc... and you physically can't get there it's maddening (especially when you read the write-ups later). Maybe he could come cook me an omelette. I'd settle for that

. The link is for Amanda Palmer singing Purple Rain. . The more I think about Prince releasing his music in the way Amanda Palmer does the more I like it. The way her website makes the music free whilst asking you to pay for it is ingenius. I honestly think this could be the way forward

Prince is just Prince though, he probably just avoids speaking with fans too much to avoid awkward questions and being put in a positin he isnt comfortable with, easier to not let the situations happen than to deal with them and potentially upset people I guess.

. I agree completely but I don't think Prince has a need to go to the lengths Amanda Palmer did. He could just release his music for free and ask for donations like she has?

I've watched Prince interact with fans a few times. I realized then that a lot of Prince fans are nuttier than he is. A large percentage think Prince is literally a saint or a God-in-the-flesh type being with spiritual powers. I kind of felt bad for him after, the 3rd of 4th nutcase mentioned The Bible while talking to him. But it's his own fault. I'm pretty sure he corresponds or something with some of them. He certainly didn't go out of his way to argue or avoid the situation. He just nodded his head and agreed, and sometimes pointed to various biblical passages that he felt made his point for him. After a while, you could see him starting to wear down. After that, I never really blamed him much for not being more accessible to fans.

If Prince released his music for free, surfed on fan's couches and asked for donations, here's a sample of the threads that would be created on the Org:
Prince is 300 x a Millionaire - WTF does he need a donation?
We Should B Paid 2 Listen 2 His Free "Music"
Prince's "Free" Music Is Not Worth a Penny
Before You Offer Your Couch To Prince, Make Sure To Make Him A Non-Preaching Agreement
My "Prince Slept Here" Couch Can B Yours for 10,000 dollars
After Letting Lovesexy Save My Life, I Donated My Savings 2 Prince: How do I get them back?
I'd rather pay for one good song than dowload that.

I LOVE all of these
.
The one I've made bold is particularly interesting though as I think it would be a reasonable enough question. Given that 3EG are calling their debut (something like) no$$$4limoyet (I didn't check on twitter) suggests that we should support the rest of the band as newcomers and ignore the fact that Prince (a multimillionaire) is on board? . Thoughts?

My professor showed this video to us some months back. I have mixed feelings about it, but it wouldn't work for Prince. He's an established artist and I dont see him doing something an indie artist would. Imagine the stories the press would write on it... I download lots of music I don't get around to listening to. And part of that's because a lot of it's free. I'm on vacation right now, and didn't bring any Prince with me--but I did bring a couple of Amanda Palmer, and I paid for them. Love me some Amanda Palmer.
But Amanda doesn't play with snippets, doesn't work to build "mystery"--she tells you what's coming (and in the case of Theatre Is Evil, it was fantastic). And there's nearly always something coming. She encourages fans to post videos--she posts tons herself. She's all over the internet, and it's an open community. That's why she's able to ask, and why people are there to give. Prince hasn't encouraged that atmosphere--and I don't think the supports there for him.

The best wat to make Prince NOT do something, is suggesting something he should do. Prince is very shy and reclusive. I don't see him doing a meet and greet with his fans like Olivia Munn does.

But if Prince just put his music out there FOR FREE (without any other fan interaction) but asking for donations then WOULD YOU PAY?
(even if the music wasn't the best he's done)?

greetings,
back around 1986, i showed up at Prince's house with my younger sister with a small freesia plant. it was all that i could afford. his guard called inside and then told me that Prince said we were invited to come in. i regret that i was so broke - did not have a job or funds to stay, visit, and change our airplane tickets to go home to illinois - that i muttered the words somewhat like this to his security, 'please tell him that we have a plane to catch' and we drove away. i acutally didn't have any credit left on my credit cards...do i regret this? absoultely - but, i look at the absolute value in mathematics where anything put inside of it - even if negative-comes out positive.
...'time' was not right as i have had the extreme fortune of listening to 'his' music and lyrics and see and feel what is in them that can in some way apply to my life/time/space and to allow myself to grow and not be a potted plant.
...do i beg with a hat now? somewhat, the answer is yes as maybe i have the fortune of being gifted with a very special hat from someone that embodies a most shining-beautiful Spirit.
i feel that Amanda is amazing and speaks through her heart. what a beautiful journey she is experiencing. she said so much here...celebrity is people loving u from a distance. what a statement. just remember that we are light and energy and that we can silently love without any boundaries of seeming distance. ~honey is b-ing 1 with the 1~

Greetings, a great story but would you pay for prince's music if he released it now for free? (sorry if the answer is above but the last bit was a bit cryptic for me)

yes ~honey is b-ing 1 with the 1~

In answer to the question--
Yes, I would pay for Prince music if he offered it for listener choice donations as Amanda Palmer has done some of her music.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
For me the answer would be if I thought the music is worth it. I have never had a problem paying for the music I like.

Prince has already "made it" (financially and in every other way). What A.P. shows is what her way of "making it" was or still is.
So there's actually no need for Prince to re-invent the wheel businesswise. He can go oldschool and sell CD's, he can put his stuff on itunes, he can give it away for free, he can make another exclusive deal with a newspaper - he'll get his money either way.
No actual need for him to go couchsurfing or utilize kickstarter.
Oh and don't forget - he has a new deal with WB which probably means a hefty advance anway.

. It's interesting because you'd have to download it and listen to it to decide whether it was any good or not. .
Is it then fair not to even give £1 or $1 even if it's not to your taste? . and really? are you sure there's not even one song in his new music worth paying for ? . I'm not saying there's a right or a wrong answer but I do find it an interesting argument. My personal opinion is that I would donate the price of an album however good or bad it was. Maybe I'm old but that was what I had to do when a vinyl album came out at the record shop (happy days) and I brought plenty of shit then, believe me

To me, some people are forgetting about the 90s. They either werent there or just plain forgot. He did very well with Diamonds and Pearls and the Gold Experience. These were named some of his best albums in years by critics, fans, etc. He also had great music and many underrated albums. Lets at least wait for the albums to arrive in our hands before we start to doubt him. Lets appreciate him for the earlier music. It is a totally different ballgame now in the music industry and Prince is a man of the 80s. The music that charts now is a world different from the music P puts out. So dont expect another Purple Rain or Musicology but lets just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. This Could Be Us But U Be Playin...

. The thing is, Prince seems to WANT to reinvent the wheel when it comes to releasing music. Maybe he doesn't need to but that doesn't seem to stop him trying. The fact he makes the money anyway is a bonus. That's why releasing his music with listener contributions would be an interesting exercise. And yes, he doesn't need to couch-surf or anything like that. Just release the damned music one way or another! . Sadly I think the WB deal will put paid to P even trying something new and inivative such as listener contributions for an established artist

. Agreed . I also think that a lot of Prince's stuff can hit you as being great years (even decades) after it is released. I didn't particularly like emancipation and others from around that period at the time but I revisit them every so often and I usually like them a little more with every listen . So??? ... I'm guessing you would pay for P's music through a free music/ listener contribution type of release (whether the music be good or not)? [Edited 7/3/14 6:54am]
