I haven't listened to those two albums with high-end earphones, but I listened the the "This Could Be Us" clip with some and then without and I was greatly surprised at the difference, I appreciated all the subtle things they're doing with that track sonically a lot more with the high end earphones.

Heck, that's pretty much every Prince song since at least the "1999" album. There's so much going on in his stuff.

I'll never forget the moment I first became a hardcore fan. I was running a proof machine in a bank in 1983, and listened to the "1999" album on headphones while I worked. I couldn't BELIEVE all the layers of music, melody and instrumentation.

Wow, I was trying to start an interesting conversation about the effect of speaker quality on how one receives different "generations" of Prince music and it looks like all I did was disturb two curmudgeons. Any one else have an opinion?

You should feel lucky that you only disturbed two of them! Trust me, there are plenty more hibernating around here.

Everyone's got an opinion and we won't all agree...I'm sure there are many little layers and intricacies in those album that used to be Princes trademark and are sadly missing from more recent releases but, for me, those 2 albums will always represent something slightly sad ; Rave always feels like he's trying desperately to rekindle something that had been slipping away from since NPS a few years earlier and TRC is almost 2 fingers up to that ...it's like 'ok, I haven't still got the thing that set me ahead if the game for do many years do I'll create my own game where I'm the only player, only I understand it and it's all about me"

I think sound-wise TRC is the best he has produced. Whether you like the lyrics or not, there is real craftsmanship in there....

Also NEWS is at similar level.

I am using UE triple.fi 10

I now that some of you will not agree, so don't start bashing...

Wow.. those are nice. Im afraid to buy something in that price range because I read reviews and people say they spent 300 dollars on earphones and the day after the warranty expires a cable becomes lose and it won't play out of one ear.

Change it one more time..

So my opinion of these two albums has been DRAMATICALLY changed by listening to these albums with high-end earphones -- specifically, Shure SE535's. Essentially, there's more subtlety and "sonic twists" to the music that I've never noticed with other speakers. I tried listening to "Dirty Mind" and "Purple "Rain" for the same effect but the difference is not as notable. Has anyone else observed this?

Makes me want to go by a pair! cool lol

The Shure headphones now have a connector between the earpiece and cables so that this is not a problem. I promise you, if you can spare the $, you'll surely appreciate the sound quality.

Wish I had some high end headphones so I could say something useful. Especially since most of this thread is stuff people could have said (and probably have said) on any number of other threads that mention Rainbow Children. I've listened to the album less than I would have otherwise because some of the lyrics threw me off--but that's not what this thread's about.

.

So--what sort of details are you hearing?

Sorry for slow reply, been traveling.

Two song segments that notably changed between high-end earphones and standard speakers are...
RAVE UN2...."Undisputed", from 2:08-2:23: Prince says something like "commercialization of the music is what brought it down" then a harpsichord plays. With standard speakers, I hear the harpsichord and Prince singing some mocking tune along with it. With the high-end earphones, you also hear a series of voices...a woman moans, Prince says "aw hell...", and then a crowd cheering along. Kind of cool, I mean where in a Prince song do you get to hear a woman moan!

RAVE UN2...."Whereever U go....",beginning: The drums playing in the beginning have some sound and texture to it that is very striking. With standard speakers like Bose speakers in a car, you hear a hint of this, but there's a lot more to it that I hear with the better earphones. Sounds like synthesizer effects overlaid on the drums. (Sorry if that's a poor description)

Minor stuff I suppose, but I like how the higher quality speakers let you discover subtleties to songs you've heard many times before.

Here's a website you may find interesting : http://princevault.com/

Everyday Is A Winding Road is the ninth track (eighth song) on Prince's 23rd album Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic (his sixth under the name ). The track is a cover version of the 1996 track by American singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow (written by Sheryl Crow, Jeff Trott and Brian McLeod, from her album Sheryl Crow, also released as a single).

While specific recording dates are not known, initial tracking likely took place in early 1999 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The track was not included on the remix album Rave In2 The Joy Fantastic, and it is not known if it was considered for inclusion.

Oh ok.. cool. thanks for that info. I've been checking a few out but when I read some bad reviews (they were probably older models from 2011-2012) I got scared.

I am going out on limb here and say that i have rethought my stance on Rave particulaly -- there is some really excellent material on it and listening to it 15 years later on a very nice hi-fi system ( I may add) it holds up production wise and as a long player. I think it's good work. Love Man 'O War, Tangerine, the Sun/Moon/Stars, I love U(but i don't trust you), Silly Game and Wherever I go/whatever I do...

It's a weird record in the sense that when you think about it there are quite a few tracks there that are at least as good as anything that he did in the 90s (let's face it, even if a lot of people don't get the appeal of "Pretty Man", it's still among his best 90s funk tracks). It's just that production-wise it's too all over the place. He tried to introduce some sort of consistency by using the LinnDrum (LM-1) again, but the tracks that don't have it on them sort of fight against that sound (he really should have used it on some other tracks too, like "Hot Wit U" for example). The drum sounds on the non-Linn tracks are just plain terrible. Some of the worst drum sounds I've heard.

As such the album's not that different than, say, picking up some tracks from Emancipation randomly and calling it an album. But even with its flaws, Emancipation had more of a natural flow to its overall sound.
