I've been listening to the two versions of the song circulating. I previously thought the longer version was simply an extended version of the shorter track. But the two versions are actually very different from each other. Different mix, different instrumentation. The playing on the shorter version seems a lot more agressive, cacaphonic even. Bass and guitar much higher up in the mix. Speed is diffrent too. On the longer version the synth intro played by Adam Holzman (?) (and possibly part of the Miles solo) have been moved to the middle section right before the bass solo.

How much of the difference is down to the sound quality on the circulating tapes?

Anyone notice further differences?

I figure it's down to a case of how the track was edited. I'm sure the shorter version is from the longer version, just cut and pieced together, which could make the alterations you probably hear.

Maybe. Not only are there extra parts in the long version, there are also parts in the shorter one not included in the long version. As well as parts having been moved around. To me it sound as some parts may have been rerecorded as well, but I'm not sure.

Reportedly toyed with it after Miles recorded his parts so yeah that's edits AND additions

the longer version leaked a few years ago when some Miles re issues were being sorted, it nearly made it on to one but probably got blocked by you know who

By the way - was the "NO"at the end reused for Alphabet Street?
