That's a fair point. What I believe is an equally fair point is that the makeup of Prince's audiences at his larger arena shows also consists of the "general public" ("casual fans" as they are often labeled). He performs rock, soul and funk music for those audiences as well, and no one thinks twice about it. I generally find it baffling what people presume a particular audience can handle, and the reasoning and rationales for that mode of thinking equally baffle me. It's hard to hear it and not draw troubling conclusions about individuals' views on stereotypes and societal conventions.

Thank you engaging and indulging me. A little intellectual back-and-forth never hurt nobody. smile

A little singing never hurt anybody either...oh wait, Prince was not singing that much either...let's see, let's make the concert less than two hours, let's shorten the lyrics to the song in a medley format...and...oh yeah, let me hold the microphone out to the auidence, let them sing a bit...

It was a good show, but his insistence on singing less than usual was annoying. He also hardly played any instruments other than guitar on a few songs.

But isn't that what he's done frequently over the last few years--as in, BEFORE 3rdEyeGirl? Frankly, that's the sort of stuff he's done for a while with NPG shows, especially as he moved toward more and more festival type gigs.

I'd still probably be crazy overjoyed to finally see him live (even if he did that), but as a listening experience it doesn't work great (not that I've ever listened to recordings of shows, of course).

How does Prince's choice of bands make the band inept? confuse

It seems like the threadstarter is a racist. He wants prince to play "black music" to black people, and not that "white" music.

To label someone a racist based on this is absurd and borderline (if not outright) slander. Even if you use the term "seems". You should not accuse someone of such a heinous thing over something so frivolous. My two cents.

I wouldn't say inept but I agree that the Essence band was lacking funk. Some of it may have been the sound was crap in this huge enclosed arena but a big part of this was Prince almost never had an instrument in his hand. He is the funkiest man in the world and his musicality was missed. It was kinda like LeBron not going to the bucket and settling for 20-25 foot jumpers all night. Also think an extra keyboardist and bassist would helped bring the funk we are accustomed to seeing at a Prince show. Prince thought that NPG Hornz would fill in but didn't quite happen. Peace and be wild people.
