Emancipation is my choice; I love the symbol album, why are you guys picking on it? sad

The reasons for me go beyond the music.

I first got into Prince when I saw the Lovesexy concert on TV and bought the album. I was hooked. It was exciting going into the back catalogue. I wanted to feel the same excitement with his new releases.

First there was Batman. A good album but not particularly exciting. Oh well I thought, it's tied in with the film so not to worry.

Then Grafitti Bridge. The Prince songs on it are mostly excellent but still not very exciting. As other people have pointed out, the film seems better when it is viewed as an extended video.

Diamonds and Pearls. Better. More in the vein of SOTT. A more coherent collection of songs. However I never listen to it anymore. Brilliant tour.

When I bought Symbol and after listening to it I just thought that 4 years after hearing Lovesexy and SOTT I wanted an album that would set me alight like those two.

My Name Is Prince and Sexy MF are just average, really, really average. I mean you know it's Prince but they're just throwawy jams. Bluelight and Sweetbaby bore me. 3 Chains of Gold and Sacrifice of Victor do nothing for me.

The songs that move me are 7, 2the9's and God Created Woman.

The question I asked myself is that, do I really want to take an active interest in Prince's new music anymore. That's why I don't like this album. It leaves me cold, especially in light of his previous body of work.

ona live and trc...i've tried really hard but i'm still bored. ONA Live is filled with technically well played bland material (from ona, trc, ect.) and a few half hearted renditions of the more interesting older songs...has some bright moments but they are few and far between.

Birthday show, Cobo Hall, 86. I can't enjoy it because I don't have it. I'd LIKE to have it. I've managed to download several video clips from the show itself but it's incomplete. sigh

Probably "1999".
I'm aware it's an album full of memorable songs, but for some reason I don't know I find it difficult to listen to it from start to end as a whole.

The Rainbow Children. That thing about women having to abdicate their discernment to their husbands. As if they are some form of inferior beings without a separate identity. Which raises the question, what if a woman is at the mercy of an abusive and controlling husband? For example, he could insist that she looks fat, scold her whenever she attempts to exercise her right to eat what she needs and wipe out her self-esteem. Also, it seems to me that the Muse has no importance except as a baby machine. Once she agrees to become Queen, she cannot disagree with anything the Pharaoh says or does.
If Prince has been able to realize that slavery and racism have hurt his people, the existence of conflict between Jews and African-Americans, and the explotation of animals; what about WOMEN?
I remember that he once said that he hated feminists. Has he ever read any feminism? I bet he hasn't. If he is so daring, why is he intimidated by it?

I wish Emancipation had a lasting power w/ me, but it doesn't sigh Certain songs still sound great to me (I Can't Make U Love Me, The Love We Make, One Kiss @ A Time, Let's Have a Baby, The Human Body, a few more) but I put it in & it just sounds hollow sad

I don't even try anymore w/ NPS & C&D, Rave never had a chance...

side note: I find it absolutely hilarious that 1999 is stated anywhere on this thread!!! Individual taste is something else... nuts lol

Most 'attempted to like' Prince album, but still disappoints...

prince: 2 votes
Emancipation: 5 votes
Newpower Soul: 2 votes
Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic: 2 votes
The Rainbow Children: 5 votes
ONA Live: 2 votes

Generally speaking, it appears fans have been struggling to enjoy Prince's music during the 90s.

hmm
