Okay, full disclosure, I'm really stoned right now, which is hardly a unique state of mind for me.

With that in mind, I was just listening to Phil Collins' "Take Me Home" for the first time in who knows how long (thank u, Amazon Prime) and it suddenly occured to me that the music sounds just like that for Sign O' The Times, both the pinging synth and the little drum part, and it sounds to me like Prince may have borrowed liberally, slowing it down and modifying it.

I always thought the Sign O' The Times song was such an original piece of music ever since the day it was released, and now all of a sudden I feel like at least half the music was essentially lifted from "Take Me Home", which I also heard a million times back in the 80's, yet never made the connection until just now.

What do u think? Am I too stoned, crazy, both or neither?

Oh god, stop! I hated that song. I was joking back in 1986 or whenever that came out, that it sounded like he pressed start on a keyboard preset and then added vocals.

Phil Collins (pre-'Groovy Kind of Love') kicks ass - I'm not even kidding. Live at Perkins Palace is a great concert.

Phil Collins openly admitted it was inspired by 1999. No one got in trouble, there was no court case.

There are people on a.m.p who swore they saw something about a lawsuit on MTV back when they were young. Rudedog and Lorne, IIRC.

The best part of "Sussudio" is the 16th note bass pattern, which was programmed by David Frank of The System. He also played a lot of the synths on Chaka's "I Feel 4 U" cover.

i don't think it went to court, but there was negative publicity about it. Prince/Warners maybe didn't care? I see this in wiki: The synthesizer riff was heavily criticized for sounding too much like Prince's 1982 song "1999," a similarity which Collins does not deny, saying that he is a big fan of Prince's work.^[13]

But it was more than the main synth line of horns, it was also electronic percussion... and vaguely the lyric melodies.

I don't know about that but sussudio is a ripoff of 1999. Just like Jump by Van Halen is ripped off of Uptown

I see where you're coming from rhythmically but it seems a bit of a stretch. Uptown is arguably a take on Miss You by the Stones anyway.

I never heard a link between SOTT and Take Me Home, BUT: thematically I think it's very cool how Sign of the Times is clearly the parent to the child of The Future.

The Future is definitely from the same mold of "future warning song", and the vocal melody in the verses is almost identical in the two songs. They are sibs.

I think there is a definite similarity in the rhythm, but I don't hear enything else in common between the two.

Have you read the Sounds Like Teen Spirit-text? Besides, borrowing riffs and putting a new melody on top is what Prince has done more than once.

So 1999 was a hit three times (that we know about): as itself, Manic Monday, and Sussudio.

As for "Sussudio", yeah it's similar, but considering Collin's admitted to it, that was probably enough in Prince's book.

I swear Collins even said he took from The Jacksons "one more chance" for "one more night" LOL. Oh and Collins is charming aswell and had respect, which probably helped Prince not um per"sue" it.
