Yeah his Middle Easter influence is a different topic I want to do, he's talked more about that part than any influence from places like Japan/China/Korea etc seems a lyric here or there and a lot of clothing inspiration though

Interestingly, in some languages, the term "orient" refers to the Middle East. As far as I know, only English speaking countries refer to the far east as "orient".

In most other countries, the term "orient" means Middle East.

Prince´s Middle Eastern connection is surely interesting and started in the early to mid 90s, and is still ongoing (Middle Eastern friends, co-workers, photographers like Afshin Shahidi, trips to Egypt, the concert opening with those Moroccan bongo/darbuka players in Spain in 1998, his poem The Moors of Spain, the song Cinnamon Girl, etc. etc.).

Yes I agree, in general the orient includes the Middle East I should specify the area of influence lol I can't even say Asia(n) because that includes the Middle East India & parts of Russia

.

Actually David Coleman(Lisa Colemans brother) introduced Prince to Middle Eastern forms of music and instruments:Around the World in a Day being a song with a touch of that. Lisa & Wendy also play Middle Eastern instruments and the Dream Factory version of Strange Relationships had those instruments.

David Coleman - cello, oud, fingercymbals, darbuka and background vocals

.

And of course Mayte was a trained belly dancer/dancer and middle eastern dance/culture which is and featured a lot of that influence in videos and stage performances and in her time with Prince

Like the video the song/video 7, Love 2 the 9s's and the One from New Power Soul to name a few

So I definately agree, it seems like his Middle Eastern interest is deeper and for a longer time

I think Vanessa Mae (known for her electric violin) has recorded some stuff with Prince. I'm tempted to say it was something to do with the Xpectation album - but I couldn't swear to it.

On the Album N.E.W.S. "East" has a flavour of the orient though arguably it's only one section of the piece.

C-note - has the songs "Tokyo" "Nagoya" a"Osaka". "Tokyo" has a very serene oriental feel to it IMO.

The songs "7" and "Thieves in the temple" also have aspects of the orient, but it'd be overstating the point to say the orient was a theme.

It was indeed Xpectation smile

I missed this post, thanks for the info. Forgot about this piece

All five tracks are named after the location they were recorded in. The album's title is an acronym, taken from the first letters of the five tracks: "Copenhagen", "Nagoya", "Osaka", "Tokyo", and "Empty Room".

The first four tracks are instrumentals, although the fourth features Prince repeating "Tokyo". The fifth track is a live rendition of "Empty Room" (recorded October 25, 2002 in Copenhagen), an outtake originally intended for the album The Gold Experience, though the song was likely written ca. August 4, 1985, when it was first recorded. The song is reported to have been written and recorded for Susannah Melvoin after relationship difficulty.

born in Singapore and lived in London for most of her life since the age of 4

.

Vanessa Mae discusses recording with Prince... she is referring back to her involvement in recording contributions to the Xpectation (nee Xenophobia) session(s).
.

In an edition of Record Collector (UK magazine), Mae is interviewed in the News section - primarily about a forthcoming release.
.
During the brief interview she mentions being invited by Prince to record at Paisley Park. In anticipation, she enquired when she would receive details about what she would play (specifically, which notes). Prince explained that he hadn't come up with the concept at that stage, let alone any musical detail. However, he suggested to her that she listen to Weather Report and Herbie hancock's 'Headhunters'.
.
At the recording she admits to finding it difficult to jam with the rest of those present, and that her own contributions were therefore added to the original recording.

Beethoven and Beatles, Mozart and Michael Jackson, Paganini and Prince - I like them all.
Vanessa Mae

.
Equally, people from different spheres in music, like Prince – I’ve always admired his drama, his style, his drive and he remains a legend of music. - Vanessa Mae 1.21.2014

I think some of his best songs (IMO) have 'oriental' touches to them, such as : "Thunder", "Around the World in a Day", "When Doves Cry", "Thieves in the Temple" and "Strange Relationship" (the unreleased version, with cythar) are some examples.

You might throw in the Arabic-influenced sword dancing stuff Mayte did and some of the atmospherics during the D&P tour since Oriental refers to the exoticized East from the perspective of the West.

I don't think much of it, overall. Not a thing he particularly had much handle on, just some stuff that got thrown into the mix. The guitar riff from "The Max" and 8/18/1988 "Instrumental Jam"...just little stuff like that.

Don't forget 'Habibi', the font on prince , and ATWIAD. There's a lot of this stuff.

(Also, "Oriental" refers to objects. "Orientalism"--per Said--refers to the West exoticizing and defining the East.)

Yes -- I was thinking of Said.
