What kind of drumkit was Prince using to record these albums? I heard it was a pearl something. But More precise?

Was Bobby Z using the same kit live?

I'm curious to this because I love experimenting with sound and learning both new and old tricks for getting a certain sound. I'm getting tired of programming music, and wants some of that real shit

Thank you. Well I love drum programming also, but personally I feel it kinda limiting the feel of a groove sometimes. Especially when you're dealing with alot of 16th notes etc. It often sounds a bit sterile. You'l have to be creative with open high hats etc to give it a more dynamic feel. However if it's too strict to the metronome, it wil sound robotic. It's ok for 1999 type of music, and if you just put some programmed kicks on the 1 and 3, and snares on the 2 and 4, you can do whatever you want with synths guitars etc in between, giving it alot more bouncy swinging feel. Prince was a genuis at making robotic beats sound quite "live". But even he sometimes would sound a bit too cold to some people. Not everyone loves his 80s stuff. The want organic shit. I love both, and therefore I need to do more drums also. As when it comes to why my songs aren't finished. I'm more used to being the producer, musician and chorus type of guy. But don't worry, I'm getting there

As I have some experience both been studying sound engineering, as well as recording music for quite some time, I think the drums must have been "muted" a bit to kill the overtones from the drum kit. The kick and snare sounds close miced also. Somebody told me the dirty mind kit also used two overhead mics to get some cymbals and a little bit of "room" sound in the mix. However there's not much room sound there. It's VERY claustrophobic and close sounding. He really perfected it production wise on Controversy. And yeah, they probably both let it "clip" a little bit recording the drums a bit too loud into the 16 track recorder. And since it's analog, it will get a thicker, compressed and without digital noise. Analog "clipping" gives you harmonic overtones instead of ugly digital noize.

I loved the grit from DIrty Mind. I don't think it will be impossible to get a similar sound. I've been listening alot to the Tubeway Army with Gary Numan, and those drums are actually style wise very similar, but more punk/new wave and less funk, and alot more open sounding. The attitude is very similar. I don't need no John Blackwell sounding drums. The vintage sound of these records are perfect imo. But it would be cool to get that sound, just with better sound quality with modern equipment and knowledge.
