^Yes and he later admitted he was wrong. I never understood why anybody believed that anyway. Purple Rain was supposed to be as big a success as possible and then you don't want to release a double album (especially if you already did two years ago) because that's just too much (both in terms of money and music) for the average listener to handle.

V10LETBLUES said: Prince needs a producer period. If you look at Prince's output since he was released from slavehood, if you look at an artist like George Lucas after Star Wars, when they are allowed to create stuff on indugent whims in a bubble, the output has been abysmal. An artist as well as people need pushback. Need criticism, instead of living in that bubble of self adoration. A Prince album that doesn't sound like Prince is surely not going to help.

You know, I am just not sure the 3rdeyegirls or their husbands are up to the task, but Prince is on the right track, getting feedback from real friends. I just wish the advice came from people with a tenure in funk music, or even jazz.

Mindfux you are a real douchebag for slagging me like that .. u cant follow basic rules and discuss the thread instead you need to shit all over me to compensate for your inability to handle being wrong .. I have 2 kids whom I raised and do a lot of other things besides music .. i just opened for gogol bordello last week and eugene came out and played a couple tunes with us as well .. I am as successful as I want to be and dont chase bs pop stardom superficiality .. and I like my privacy .. and I dont like to tour .. and I am a fucking musical genius .. and i can play real instruments unlike mindfuk ..
ufoclub .. yes a producer of a no talent wanna be pop star who cant write or perform for shit certainly does all the things you outlined .. a producer of someone who can write and perform is more of a feedback type persona .. Rick Rubin is the example i site because I know he essentially lays on a couch and listens .. he does not need to write tunes for RHCP because they do that .. when he produced gogol bordello eugene submitted 60 tunes to pick from .. Rubin is a great producer from Danzig to Beasties to Jay Z to Johnny Cash .. don't tell me I don't know what I am talking about when you have NOTHING to contribute to the conversation ..
are u gonna tell me Rick Rubin told Johnny Cash how to write a song? .. jesus .. jealous much .. say something credible for a change [Edited 7/31/14 10:48am] You know what they say? "If you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen! " I bet if Prince were ever to read any thread you have featured in, my guess would be he might just say to you what you said to me, because you do exactly the same to him as I then did to you.....and, got pretty upset, didn't you? Perhaps you might want to consider your own actions and attitudes? As a fellow musician, I find your stance abhorrent (and, for the record, I am a proficient drummer and percussionist, keyboardist, guitarist and reasonable bass-player - but then it's not like liked u to spout off from m an ignorant position, is it?!). Oh, and by the way, a producer is not the same as a sng-writer, so you're arguments are, well, not arguments. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

hey start a thread about my music and feel free to critique it all you want .. the FACT is you go out of your way to shit on me instead of discussing the thread topic .. this is a forum for prince discussion but you can't seem to handle that or my views, so u shit all over me and my music just for fun .. you are a bully .. and i never said a producer is the same as a songwriter .. so again you are talking loud and saying absolutely nothing .. prince is welcome to critique my music all he wants .. he even lifted a couple of my lines for one of his songs so i can't be that bad .. again .. feel free to start a thread or forum about ME and flame away .. i can handle the heat .. ur just rude ... and not in that cool .. people call me rude .. way ... so now you are prince boyfriend or something and you are all upset because I suggest that magnoli ears and song choices helped make PR great? jesus .. step away from the controversy shower poster on the wall that you are licking while posting .. you are not prince mama .. you don't need to defend him from us beasts who suggest he had a little help ... and my suggestions are hardly offensive to prince or anyone .. no credible reason for you to slag me so in conclusion .. u are just a jerk .. not a cool jerk .. a jerk .. go back to hitting buttons on your drum machine and the space aura button on your casio

I have a song called Kissing Angels. I recorded it about 20 years ago on an analog 8 track machine. Definitely an attempt to sound like prince in my own way. I had just taught myself drums and played all instruments on the tune. It sounds slow to me now as I play it much faster these days with my band ASTROCAT. So I had a pretty spicey thing going with a fellow orger maybe 7 years ago. long distance Online and phone calls only, never met her. But she mentioned that she told Prince to check out my tunes as she had worked for him at some point. This was one of the songs featured at the site I was using at the time. Years later I hear the montreax 2009 of Prince doing ALL THIS LOVE and I am like .. damn that line sounds a little too familiar.
My lyrics ... "your lips are soft your eyes are glowing / your hips are round and your heart is showing"
All this love lyrics ... "my lips are soft my hips are round" however on the prince sung montreaux performance he changes it back to "your lips are soft your hips are round" .. and I ask .. if I did not inspire this line .. are we really to believe that either prince or bria would say "my hips are round" i dont recall bria having hips and prince sure dont .. so where did this lyric come from .. hmmm
here is my track .. i recorded it when I was 20 something and just learning my gear but i am sure mindflux will act like i spent 2 years recording this one song and just put it out yesterday so he can shit on it .. i spent about a day on .. i tend to just throw down ideas quick because with kids i dont have much time to perfect .. still a decent song tho imo

I wasn't saying Shelby J and Morris Hayes weren't friends, but I don't know they were providing valuable editing suggestions. Were they allowed in the studio to that degree? There was talk about Prince working with a "young, upcoming producer" who was really the husband of a 3rd Eye guitarist.

No editor can save his albums from his duck-sounding voice and absolutely horrendous lyrics. Prince himself needs to straighten up, because editor or not, I highly doubt he has enough good songs to make another classic like TGE for example. His voice & lyrics are the reason I don't listen to anything post 2002.. . and LOL @TrevorAyer. "i am a fucking musical genius" lolol Maybe do, just not like did before

Well done for continuing to prove my point. I wondered how you would feel if someone spoke the same way about you as you do about other musicians and just look at the diatribe it got from you. And I wasn't even harsh on you - all I said was that you were "disrespectful" (point absolutely proven!) and "not that good".....and just look at your vitriolic reaction. Again, I say, you better think about what you say.
This had nothing to do with defending Prince, this had to do with calling out a bigot like you and defend against ANY musician (I mean, just as you go on to diss my music for simply being in the electronica genre, as though that is somehow different to "real" music - the fact being that you could only dream of writing with that sort of complexity and diversity in styles, instead of the generic yawn-fest you do produce). And, by the way, I wouldn't waste my time starting a thread about your music. You don't give it the love it deserves, apparently because you have kids. What a weak excuse! If you loved your own music, you'd give it the attention it deserves - to presume I would suggest you spent 2 years on a track that sounds like you spent a few hours own is presumptious in the extreme.
Now go back to dreaming that a similar line in a Prince song was actually Prince copying you - jeesh.....talk about conceited. Dickhead. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

so u call me a bigot and a dickhead just because i point out that you fail at discussing the op, and you choose to harrass me for whatever your own petty reasons are .. this is a prince forum, yet you need to hop on a thread just to try to insult me. i guess i am only allowed to say how 'sexy' prince is, and how pretzelbodylogic is his best song ever, because moderator mindflux is so upset that i would possibly suggest otherwise .. sorry i hurt your small little feelings so bad mindflux .. i didn't realize you were 7 years old .. i will try to only say nice things and pretend my music sucks so you can feel better about 'playing' the drum machine button on your casio ..
ps my kids are not an excuse, they are a reality .. and my success is not determined by your standards of what i should do with MY music .. considering your personality, it is a good sign that you don't dig my sound, good luck with that (personality of yours)

I called you a bigot because of your attitude to fellow musicians and I called you a dickhead for thinking that Prince lifted one of your lyrics. Do try and keep up with the debate. The lyric in question is so vague and a truism, that you might as well say that anyone who has ever used a lyric that says "the sky is blue" must have plagiarised! Had you said something more unique, such as "Like Evian and the deep blue sea, You and me got different tastes", you could easliy claim the steal. But lips being soft and hips being round.....wait a minute, has he maybe ever said that titties bounce.....?!!
Kids are a reality - I have two myself. I do less gigs these days and spend a bit less time in the studio, as I love to spend as much time with them as possible - prioritiess need to be different. Doesn't mean that anything I end up writing gets any less love and care.
And no, I will never determine your success.....and I got news for you mate....neither will you! You talk of limiting your success (again, so conceited!), when actually you have NO CONTROL over that aspect of your music-making. That entirely depends on the audience, upon people actually liking your music and demanding it. When/if that happens, you don't control it then either - other than, if you become too popular, the only way to remove that demand and resultant ""fame is to simply stop putting out music.
Anyway, nothing more to add. I've made my point, this was never about demolishing you, but seeing if you could take your own medicine. You know how I feel about that aspect of you (for all I know, the rest of Trevor is spectacular), whether you do anything about it is entirely up to you (I suspect I've fallen on deaf ears).
See you around ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I am still not following your calling me a bigot or a dickhead. You jump on a thread to tell me you think my music sucks. Great. Like I said .. start a thread about me. Post a song of mine and critique it. I got no problem with that. But to jump on a thread just to diss me instead of discussing the OP looks like pure bully harrassment and has nothing to do with the merits of my point of view. I just cant respect that or calling me a bigot for challenging your reasons for doing so.
It is completely fair for me to suspect prince may have done a little lifting of my phrasing. The 2 lines in question are quite similar, and he was aware of my music. I also think P was inspired by my live mash ups, which I was doing before he came up with his lets go crazy / frankenstein mash up. Do I know for sure? No. Is my speculation reasonable? Completely. That certainly does not make me a dickhead. However, you jumping on a thread with the SOLE purpose of insulting me does make you a jerk, and that is why I called you one.
As for my success. Believe it or not, I consider myself a complete success. I really enjoy what I do and when u have a room full of a thousand people chanting your bands name, that feels like success to me. I come from punk. Raw in your face screaming fuck you pop garbage punk. Like old fugazi, misfits, dead kennedys, black flag. From back before they were a new fashion style at hot topic. I respect prince and love a lot of his stuff, but to tell me I should work hard on perfecting my music to make it more to your liking is kind of silly.
I prefer my music to feel alive, mistakes and all. I strive for my music to sound like your favorite bootleg that is a soundboard, a bit raw, some mistakes, but a lot of magic moments. I care more about the moment than sterilizing it for perfection and radio friendliness. I actually have no doubt that I could have a hit whenever I want to. In fact someone from the org just approached me to write a hit with her due to this very discussion. Isn't that funny, considering you think I suck so bad?
Hell I have songs prince could have a hit with right now, if he wasn't so inclined to ruin good ideas these days. I mention my kids only because I have spent most of my time with them the last 20 years and only now that my youngest is 11 have I found the time to cull through the thousands of recordings I have thrown down on cassette, 8 track studio, live and digital formats over the years. All in between bouncing a child on my belly and changing diapers and driving kids everywhere and fighting with ex wives in court and all that sort of endless garbage. Oh and working some crappy day jobs too. So it is not an excuse because I really enjoy raising my children. My kids all know multiple instruments. My son at age 11 knows ukelele, keyboard, drums, guitar, sax and a little trumpet. Hell that is more than prince can claim.
So why would I consider fame and money a success when I have kids, a family, a home, freedom, and the joy of making my music to my liking whenever I want. I am famous enough for my liking. Sometimes people stop me on the street. I don't really need to live in a tour bus or make millions. Not really into the material world. But I do like prince old music and I love to discuss music and critique it and figure out what makes it work and not work. I could care less if prince ever has a HIT again. I care more about if he can make another really great record. I wanna see it happen and if it doesn't I love discussing why. I see nothing wrong with that and I certainly don't mind if people critique my music. But you don't do that. YOu just point out how my points are invalid because you think my music sucks. It is a pointless stance for you to take. You are not discussing my point of view or your point of view or my music. You are just making yourself an opportunity to simply insult me. And that is why I call you a jerk.
