The Princes of Congress: Pols face off in friendly online Prince sing-off
Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison and New York Rep. Joe Crowley went back and forth Wednesday with their best impersonations of the pop sensation, with Ellison giving it his all on 'Purple Rain,' and Crowley singing 'Raspberry Beret.'
MATT KENT/WIREIMAGENot quite Prince: A couple pols did their best impressions, but couldn't come close.
This is what it’s like when … politicians sing.
Two U.S. congressmen faced off in a friendly singing competition on Twitter Wednesday, doing their best impersonations of pop icon Prince.
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) initiated the melodic challenge, when he posted a Vine of himself singing a verse from Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
“Can’t believe it’s been thirty years since #Purple Rain,” Ellison tweeted along with the clip.
Later in the day, Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) posted his own impression of the performing sensation — a clip of himself singing “Raspberry Beret.”
“All due respect to #purplerain, Keith Ellison, I’m partial to #raspberryberet,” Crowley wrote along with his video.
Their interplay comes just a day after a bizarre video surfaced online of a bipartisan members of Congress holding hands and singing “We Shall Overcome” at a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
