How familiar with Prince's catalog or musical history do you think the 3rd Eye Girl band members and Josh are ?

I was thinking the other day and wondering. Do you think the members of 3rd Eye Girl group or Josh have ever heard some of the unreleased recordings or soundboard shows that the fans hold in high regard such as Small Club or tracks such as "Wonderful Ass", "All My Dreams" or "Moonbeam Levels". And also, beyond the songs that Prince pulls out for them to rehearse, how much of the catalog do you think they have heard and are familiar with ? I was also curious if he ever lets them listen to some of the tracks in the vault for perhaps ideas or as a priviledge. We will probably never get the answer to this question but I thought it would be interesting to ask the fans on this board none. Also perhaps, what would you recommend they listen to unreleased wise that you think are quintessintial works ?

I think they knew of Princes catalog a little bit. Ida Nielsens favorite song was Alphabet St. before she even joined the band. Hannah was found by Prince when she did Prince songs on the drums. This was before she was in the group. Josh has supposedly always been a fan. He wasnt the biggest fan but im sure he knew songs such as When Doves Cry and Little Red Corvette or something. They probably dont know many vault tracks. Sure, they may know some but def. not all. P might use a vault song as an example or demonstration or something but that is just speculation on my part.

Most likely very well. By now Princey has let the Tambourine man loose in the Vault.
lol
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

So suffice to say...Josh has mastered Prince's vault and could play "Ronnie Talk To Russia" and "My Little Pill" at moments notice.

Well, i heard a rumor that for the remasters Josh was going to add some additional Tambourine work to "Tambourine" and he deleted the cowbell track on "Endorphinemachine" to replace it with him playing the cowbell. And I agree. He's a way better player on Cowbell than the original performer on the track. Cant wait for those remasters.

I wish they weren't familiar with it at all. Might lead to something fresh and new.

I have some experience meeting people that work within some insular rock star camps - and they're usually pretty flippant even defensive about competing with the super fans. I'm sure some would want to study everything their boss has ever done, but my guess is it's a fine line and they got hired in part of Prince wanting to think he's mentoring them. I'm sure he's shared some oddball tracks from the Vault, but yeah, I'd doubt they would pass a pop quiz.

My guess is they know hits. As far as outtakes and rare stuff? Probably not. Only what he shows them to play. Like if I called out wonderful ass or tricky they wouldn't know what I was talking about.

From what I read Ida was already in NPG a few years before. P went on search for some talent on the internet and found Hannah. Hannah and Josh were instructed to go find a female guitarist. They searched online for videos and thats how they found Donna.

Agreed! There's no reason why Prince's band members should be fans like us. I'd like to take it even further. I wish Prince would head off to Cuba and play with musicians who never even heared if him!

it would seem logical to me that they get to do their homework once they

got the job. they've probably listened to all of his albums, even the ones

the general public isn't too aware of. if i were a musician and i'd get a job

with someone who had a huge back catalogue, it would be a priority for

me to get familiar with all of it.

/

outtakes is another thing entirely. they don't need to know those really.

unless prince decides to dust one off to play live, in which case they will

hear it and rehearse it. he might play them the odd track when they're

just hanging out in the studio or debut his new solo material to them.

As far as rehearsal goes it was stated that they know hundreds plus of his songs by rehearsing. I doubt they are fans such as we are but they know a good amount of his music. Especially the NPG, which the 3rdeyegirl band is joined with anyway.
