Audiophiles.......please help I have been interested in great sound for many years. I have some decent equipment and have recently begun adding accoustic absorption/bass traps etc into my room to optimize the sound.
Is it me or do Prince's albums sound terrible when you compare to other artists of his magnitude? I listen to 1985's Brothers In Arms and am blown away by the sound quality. I have heard great things about 1986's Graceland by Paul Simon. I listen Sting's album with Little Wing (NOthing like the SUn?) and it is so clean (perhaps a bit too clean).
Sarah Mclaughlin - everything sounds amazing.
I recall many years ago an interview with Sheila E where she says that Prince was not one to mic everything perfectly...he was after the feeling. So, are we just stuck with his poor recording or do we expect great improvements in the upcoming re-releases?
Let me know what you all think.
Having said all this, I do find that the One Night Alone piano album sounds good, but for a bit too much bass.

Well..... Yeah, they don't sound quite as professional as some of the other greats of the 80's, probably because Prince recorded all over the place. Mobile studios, home studios, live recordings that got overdubbed into studio recordings. But overall I don't think they are horrible, but they could definitely be better. Remastering isn't gonna help shitty recordings though.
The Brothers In Arms SACD is pretty damn awesome. Give it a listen if you have the equipment to play it back. And dont go to crazy with the absortion panels/bass traps. Before you know it your room will sound lifeless.

I forgot to ask what format are your Prince albums on? Because the vinyl versions of his 80's material sound a little better to me. They're not lightyears ahead, but noticable. Also, I'm not sure if your are an EQ person or not, but try listening to everything flat without any EQ. A few years ago I stopped EQing anything. It sounded weird as hell at first but now anytime someone has the treble and bass jacked up on their stereo it drives me nuts!!

No EQ- I have only out in two traps and two panels. I removed one trap as it removed too much bass from the room. Anyway, my point was that I care about sound quality and Prince is relatively poor. His CDs sound bad- I know Alphabet St has an awesome bass guitar part but I can't hear it well enough. That whole album sounds shiny but bad. Funny enough, Etotic City sounds good from years before. My new amp and DAC made his rhythm guitar laying standout a ell as his initial vocals befor he ak ga the first line.

Buy a decent pair of headphones i'm not kidding. Best easiest way to get hi-fi sound, even dare i say with ipod and mp3. Everything sounds better even sign of the times! [Edited 6/27/14 21:03pm] The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

In a way, it's good those records don't suffer from 80's studio sheen. Unless the remastering is really involved, there's only so much they can fix.
