WHY NO "BREAKDOWN"VIDEO?

Best new song in years, and dude is once again squandering the perfcet opportunity to remind fools who the fuck he is! Meanwhile, that horrid, horrible horror that "Breakfast Can Wait" gets a (uberwack TM) video, remixes, the whole she-bang-bang! Maybe he'll wait a couple years to drop a video like he did with, what was the name of that song?

What gives P?

sigh

That, and where's the vid 4 "Fallinlove2nite" as well?

It's a regular pattern with prince: how 2 mess up with a single's chart per4mances by not doing a vid 4 it.

TGRES: "oh, this is gonna b my new TMBGITW, wait a minute, let's wait 2 months b4 doing a vid 4 it... Oh! How comes no one is buying my single?". IIRC it was the same with Rasberry Beret and Alphabet St.: late, last minute vids. And IIWYG: "oh I'm gonna throw a very difficult, anti-gay alienating, intellectual, literary single at the world, but u know what, I'm not gonna make a video 4 it just 2 make it even more difficult... oh! I'm so sad, how come no one bought my single?!".

I guess the logic behind this is "I want the music 2 succeed by itself" but the problem is that without a vid some people will never even know the song exists in the first place. More people watch TV and roam online than listen 2 radio stations nowadays.

+ if u consider prince made dozens of videos 4 unreleased songs just 4 having them rot in the vault, why in the world not make vids 4 the songs he DOES release falloff

A video would have made no difference, this song A. is not that good and B. not appealing in today's musical climate.

It's not the point, really. Obviously if they released it (prince and WB) it's because they believe in it for better or worse. And we're not talking being #1 at the Top 200 for 10 weeks, just getting exposure. That's the key word, that's what any cultural product needs in order 2 meet its audience, however limited it may be: exposure. A music video, nowadays, probably multiplies said exposure by 3, so it's worth it. Now that u don't like that song is another matter... entirely wink

Well, it IS my point, whether you like it or not. The song is "nice" but not worthy of such an investment, the product just isn't relevant/good enough. If they (WB and Prince) had believed it was, we would have seen a major push.

Have to agree. I can see why Prince fans enjoy the song (although personally, the lyrics make me cringe), but it is absolutely NOT a hit. Fallinlove2nite is the closest he's come to writing something that might work in the current music world, but even that was just too weak and uninspired to be anything special.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Well it's OK but don't blame 4 not ageeing to believe everyone on this earth is entitled to have a "point" on every bloody subject. I know it's a popular opinion nowadays, it's not mine, I'm sorry, call me elitist if u will I don't mind, this is my point and by definition it's valid since everyone's on everything is wink

If everyone here claiming that a song or album is either genius or disastrous had a point then every album or song by prince would be at the same time genius AND disastrous. I don't mind people expressing their own taste but the tendency most people here have 2 naively believe that their perception of a work of art is the ultimate and only truth about it and therefore universal is a delusion that makes me very much at unease because it's only one step away from madness and as I already explained it numerous times on this forum, due to having had an insane mother who made a hell of my childhood, I'm very much uncomfortable with madness (something I would define, from my experience of it, by the incapacity one has to make a difference between their delusions and reality).

I'm not calling u mad, I'm just saying that I'm gonna speak my mind about this in a way that's as obstinate as urs to speak ur mind about your delusions regarding ur perception of prince's songs being universal.

And it's cool, we can fight our holy wars, the both of us, and b at peace with each other, so let's agree 2 disagree wink

You guys have no idea how songs get radio airplay and become hits. If The Breakdown had the backing of a major record company the song would have received airplay and done well on Urban AC format at the minimum. As lost as P does not have the full backing of a major lable he will not get radio airplay and any video will relegated to the internet.

I honestly do not understand why this is so hard for people on this board to comprehend. Perhaps if he puts something out WB this year with the right promotion we will see more airplay and better sales. If John Legend can wobble his ballads all over the radio I am sure the public can handle P's ballads.

People have been lied to by mass medias for the last 50 years and here's the result. Most people believe that the quality of a song/album makes its success and that, therefore, everything that's a success is good and everything that isn't is bad. I read it on this very forum almost every day. Actually 90% of what makes a song/album successful is marketing but people don't know that and I suspect they don't want to know it anyway because it would be admitting how easily manipulated they are.

That's not the point I was trying to make.

My point being, if he'swilling to give "Breakfast SHOULD Wait" the royal treatment, why not his "favorite" song? And while I can respect your opinion on the quality of the song, I disagree about the appeal. But we won't know either way unless somebody gets off their ass and do work! lol It's not about a trying to get a "hit", something I doubt Prince has in him anymore. It's about us, the fans.

Now, for all I know, there might already be vid for this song. But where is it?

No surprise.... like so many times before Prince is not doing much promotion, sometimes no promotion at all.

Nothing new..... he is really bad promoting his music.

A little sad - but I am not surprised... to why his sales are so low these days............ years...

btw, I agree with funkaholic72, the Breakdown song is not that good to begin with.

yeah I was so disappointed in Manchester 17/5 that he didn't do 'the breakdown' - especially since they did it on the LOL tour (you know the tour where they didn't sing LOL) and it had just been released. That's Prince for ya!

A proper video could have helped turn it into a song that the general public actually heard.

I find it funny... 4 the last few months b4 it was released and only circulating on boots, I hadn't heard it and I kept reading here that it was the most genius song prince had composed in years, and now that it's officially out everybody's bitching at it. I guess prince would rather leak his albums as bootlegs from now on, they'd get only praise. This is what I call the Tamar/Bria syndrome: u get an album that's arguably inferior to the other one being praised and the other one being bitched at but my bet is that Milk & Honey would have received nothing but bitching had it been released and Elixer would now be a fan favorite if it had leaked from the vault lol

I know werid isnt it? you'd have thought a new track out Warner would have pushed him a little to do it, or maybe thats exactly what they did try to do and he went against them? Wouldnt suprise me lol

It could have potentially been a successful track with the right promotion.

It shows that The Breakdown was a release for fans only, Prince obviously don't care about this song anymore. Maybe he release a video for it in 2025 who knows

Music videos are expensive to make and the song will not sell enough to even cover the cost of a music video with production values high enough for you knuckleheads.

Why doesn't he built a 3 million dollar mansion in honor of the house? Because no matter how much traditional promotion is thrown at it, it will not make 3 million dollars.

That's about it, really.

Don't know who you're referring to as a knucklehead, but making expensive videos for songs that never see the light of day has never stopped Prince before, as mentioned in this and plenty other threads. Some of which for songs that haven't been released.

And I don't WTF you're on about with this mansion shit. nuts

Precisely my point! A video WOULD have been an excellent promotional tool. But this cat waits 6 weeks to drop that half-assed visual of a cartoon lying on his back crying. The fanmade DeNiro video was UNOFFICIAL, contrary to what some halfwit dickriding, snitching ass bitches would have you believe. chatterbox

But alas, this thread is essentially a big rhetorical question. I know who I'm dealing with. Just something to get P's attention, since I know he (or his people) reads these threads. razz

Yeah, but its down to and within Warner's interest to promote the tracks, promotion costs dont come out of Prince's pocket, it's down to the Warner to fund now. Maybe they just didnt feel it was a strong enough release to justify a video? They could have commissioned a Live recording video though so people had something they could share and post on social media.
