Princeology 101

Hi, there! This is my first post on 'the org' even though I've been coming here for a bit. I've been a fan for about a year and have listened to first dozen albums and 'The Hits - B-Sides'. I saw that QuestLove had a course on Prince last year and thought it would make a good topic on here (I searched the forums and didn't see anything like this). So, if you were teaching a course on Prince for us newbies, what would be your curriculum? I watched the 'Purple Rain' , the live 85 show from Syracuse, the Parade era 'Birthday Show', Dortmund 88' show and everything 3rd Eye Girl has posted on youtube. I've also read several books (mostly interested in studio information) and visited princevault.com and here whenever I've sought out info. I've also listened to a bunch of 'Peach & Black' and 'Prince Podcast' Episodes.

**I edited this to make it readable. Still a newb.

I think listening to the official records from the WB era (at least) in order would be a good start. I get the feeling there's a generation of fans that are only excited by the bootlegs, and semi-legit, more nder the radar releases, on purpose.

Welcome to the Org.

Sounds like you're a model newbie, doing his homework, studying for the exam.

Don't worry it's not really an exam, but as you post topics, you will notice some folks not liking questions that have already been asked. Never mind that the Org has been in existence for ages -- for anything song or boot related, you must absolutely check Princevault or else the illustrious panel of crusty old Prince fans -- me excepting -- will mercilessly criticize you. Never you mind that there's not that much we haven't discussed yet, it upsets some of our more ancient Orgers. Don't mind them, we sometimes run out of meds.

If you can get your hands on Per Nilsen's books Dance Music Sex Romance and The Vault, you will find a wealth of information. Princevault is an excellent source, as you discovered. wink

Hi bflan!

I don't thin there a good ora a bad curriculum. Listen what you like, enjoy the flow of prince music and follow your 'purple' rabbit.

For years I went thru all studio albums, until I had the feeling to understand completely the "evolution" of prince music, then I went into boots and I discovered a new universe of pleasure. Now I listen both things, following my mood, but mostly boots. I've read some books, I loved very much an old book with all lyrics, it helped me a lot to understand P world and song, then I read Purple Reign, wich I liked, and Possessed, interesting too. Now I'm "playing" and having a lot of fun with The Vault.

Or, check out what's left of the archive of alt.music.prince and see some ancient ampers beating each other to a pulp because they were ODing on the meds for the hell of it.

My curriculum would be specialized in LIVE Prince performances from 1980 - 1990. We'd have Show and Tell with in depth discussions every day and whomever brings in something that Professor Haterwitz has never seen, would get an automatic A. wink razz lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Those were the days -- still in my view a measure of the man whose name precedes that dot.

We Prince fans are something. Hard to find a better collective of obtuse dedicated fans of an artist's past or present output.

seems like what peach and black podcast would be a good way to teach a class .. listen to each song and pick it apart and see what makes it tick and discuss ... would be awesome

Thanks for the welcoming messages. I must admit to sleeping on the greatness of Prince for a long time. I always knew about the hits and respected him, but can't really think of a more driven artist and musician. I wonder if he still spends 10+ hours a day making music.
