I have a Linn LM-1, and sometimes I'll run some of the individual drum outputs through my effects mixer. I ran the snare and rimshot through the flanger effect on this one.

This isn't really all that good since I was just making up a pattern off the cuff. It's kind of cool to toy around with the different effects, but the flanger is my favorite.

I was seriously considering starting a thread about this. To the best of my knowledge, the first time it was used was during The Cross from the Sign O' The Times movie. It can also be heard in his performance of Little Red Corvette in Montreux 2009. Has been used numerous other times also. It's cool and "very" Prince sounding!

I've always wondered how he got the sound for his guitar on the Lovesexy album, it's kind of a mechanical sound. He also uses it on Electric Chair. I have to put on my headphones now, will check back later.

Is it technically difficult to make?

I gather it's triggered by a peddle?

Was I correct about it being used for the first time in the SOTT Movie?

He used it on beats a lot, especially starting on the Purple Rain album. You can hear it on things like Sex Shooter, Erotic City. It's also what is on the guitar and causing the birdlike noises to come form the guitar held near the amp at the beginning of "Computer Blue".

The effect can be adjusted to sound different and do different things, but it basically bends the sound up and down in cycles.

A flanger is a funk staple and was in use long before Prince got into it, but yes, his songs with it are sick funky (drums or guitar). For another example of a non-Prince track with sick flange, check Tom Tom Club's Genius of Love. Yes, it is a pedal typically used for guitar but can be hooked up to any elecrtified instruments. Have one, love it.
