But if he isn't by now, I doubt it. I think we had a thread on that before in general what makes certain people a gay Icon or not. I don't think Prince meets the criteria

Prince doesn't need to become a gay icon because he already is one. But more than that, Prince is an icon, period. And he is the definition of someone who absolutely does not need to become, he already is: himself, a genius, straight but embracing both his female and male sides, setting an example for others to follow by and large, although when you get right down to the details, he has not been perfect at all on gay issues. The fact that he's the man but he's not afraid to be all vulnerable and feminine, shows he has made a contribution to tolerance in our general culture.

I don't think Prince is a "liberal" anymore (if he ever was), maybe he was once, being more liberal thinking... free "sexuality", coupled with "God", and all that... it was a rather strange mixture back then in the 1980ies,

Sales? I think Prince ignorres everything about record sales. He is good in playing conserts, and in the studio, creating the music - but he isn't good in "selling" his music.

Isn't he already one? Maybe he's not Liza Minelli but the man already sang disco bare chested in a falsetto voice, wore makeup, heels, g-strings, wore lace and blouses, then sang gender role busting lyrics. That played well with a one segment of the gay community, but more importantly, it pushed the bar and helped mainstream things so that today, people aren't so phased by it. Prince was able to do it in a way that was sexy, but also a little tongue in cheek, that was non-threatening. Consider that Stonewall was in 1969, and some of this was only 10-15 years after.

Maybe the idea of a gay icon is an antiquated one anyway? There are pop stars that try to cultivate the image, and market as if they have gay followings now.

He's a gay icon, he's a straight icon, he's one of the greatest entertainers ever to have lived. of course he is going to have a large gay following.
