It was released on C-NOTE, but considering that the general public has no idea of the existance of that CD, and that it's long out of print, yeah it is basically de facto unreleased for most people. My pendantry aside, yeah it's great, love the juxtaposition of a haunting piano ballad with blistering guitar work, such a great combination!

I think Empty Room is one of his best songs. And yeah, it was released on C-Note, but you're right in saying it's basically de facto unreleased. It would be great to have the studio version released on an album.

There is a circulating original studio version. Also a piano demo-like version from 1992.

Although the recording dates to 1985/6 the song was played over the video screens (with new video) before the 1995 Ultimate Experience concerts.

I absolutely love the studio version. Simple but dramatic in its delivery, high end instrumentally and vocally with an overdose of reverb to give it a haunting, emotional resonance. Just how I like my Prince tearjerker ballads.
And the line about finding her hair by the bathroom window is one of his genius lyrics.

Aww, I made a mistake while being pedantic about correcting someone else's. That makes me a total dick. sad

I love Empty Room, though I do not enjoy the C-Note version as much as some of the awesome live performances: London 2002, Tokyo 2002 and NSJ 2011 come to mind.

(Unfortunately,) I only was present at NSJ; almost lost myself when I heard the intro. Absolutely brilliant version.

Any other performances worth checking?

Well C-Note is really easy to get, though, even though it's beed been OOP (strange expression for a digital release but what 2 say?) 4 years.

I'd always thought the video version had been reworked in 94 from the 85 basic tracks but u're right, according to Princevault it's the 1985 version as such. eek eek

The version played on the screens sounded from that NPG era, the version on The Dawn 4.1, not from 85

I love it even though the intro reminds me of the theme to "Days of Our Lives."
