The cult of Prince. Are we part of the cult because we are posting views and opinions on a fan site? It's possible.I've never been part of a cult before. Prince is great. Bowie is great. Both are alive. Thats damn cool.

I'm in a Prince group on Facebook with at least a thousand members. When I mentioned there that I'd become a mod here, a LOT of people replied with "I don't like that site, there's too much negativity and too many people complaining all the time".
Same thing on a G+ group I'm in. |

Very true! I always come here to check about news of the remasters, but I try to keep my opinions (about P) to myself. This is the only place on the internet I know of where you can say something like, "I like 'Venus De Milo'!" and someone will tell you to log off and kill yourself.

LMAO @ The Org being the Captain Jack Sparrow of Prince fan sites.
Regardless to what people may think of us...they have heard of us. [Edited 5/22/14 20:27pm] I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I just come here for the entertainment with you all these days. I can find out Prince news faster on twitter than I can here. I think people who hand on Bowie's forum are older than average. I recognize he has younger fans that are probably the product of his collab and tour with NIN and the Earthling album, but I don't see them hanging out on his fan pages or forum very much. Prince fans are just all over the place, and it seems the craziest ones can sometimes be the most vocal. There are some scarily obsessed Prince fans that I see sometimes on the internet on twitter and facebook and I'm actually very thankful I don't see them posting here. Change it one more time..

Bowie himself is a pretty big music fan, and generous welcoming spirit (at least at this point in his life), so maybe that translates to his fanbase some. Prince himself isn't someone I would expect is very exposed and open minded to other artists. I don't know, but maybe that has something to do with it.

steakfinger said: Bowie tends to inspire a classier breed of fan. I have had very intelligent conversations with vitually every Bowie fan I've ever met. Here, for the most part, we get that fucking MASTERPIECE dude/chick.
I think Housequake was where most of the reasonable fans liked to hang out.
When it shut down I had to come over here and I feel like I've lost IQ points in the process.
That mysterious, spiritual teacher bullshit brings the weirdos out of the woodwork. Game wreckonize game, I suppose.
Couldn't agree more. | |

Prince himself once said "Every artist gets the audience they deserve"

yeah, tbh i think people over exaggerate the level of negativity on here. Sure, there are some posters that have nothing but bad things to say about Prince, but then theres 5 more to that one person who will sing his praises. When i see pointless negative threads, I usually only see them once every now and again really and just ignore them.
But you know, I dont know what the org used to be like back in the day when Housequake was still up because I wasnt interested in music at that time.

People's preception is why they think what they do but if we were to do an actual anaysis, we'd see it's not as bad as they make it out to be here.

There are some FB Prince groups that are cool but you don't get the conversation and in depth talk you will here on this type of forum. A lot of FB groups people just LIKE photos and say a 1 or 2 word comment if that.

That's true as well. It's a lot more passive. |

Maybe the old Prince wasn't but I think in recent years the complete opposite is true. He shines the spotlight a lot on other artists, to the point where some orgers even start to bitch about it (e.g. all the stage time he gave Andy Allo). And I wouldn't have heard about Laura Mvula or Lianne La Havas if he never called them out.. there's plenty of other examples. Change it one more time..

. Fair point, I just find he's attracted to a certain type of artist and don't really value who he's hyping up as coming from a knowledgeable position, it's just who somehow broke into his sphere of awareness with the right timing. Bowie is a little more intellectual and knows good literature, and seeks out new music in various genres. Bowie's also kind of retired and dabbling in things he loves at this point, not actively hustling. It makes it easy for his fans to share in his interests, rather than like, fixate on his current hair length. His attitude is something that fans can pick up on...whereas with Prince, you either like his taste or you don't. [Edited 5/23/14 13:28pm]

LOL very true
Negative members always come across as the loudest, that just a mirror of society
It's funny how there are people who trash the org on FB and other sites, but always seem to know what happening on the ORG because they are always checking it out. and taking info and pics post here
We get to the nitty gritty here

I got used to threads about how horrible Prince is. 99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

. If you need Prince to point out those artists (who got tons of press), I cannot imagine how limited your musical menu is. It takes so little effort to every now and then visit some of the major music websites and check out what albums they're giving high scores to or what artists they feature prominently. . I mean: Lianne La Havas' debut album Is Your Love Big Enough? was awarded the title of iTunes Album of The Year 2012. And that's just one of many accolades she got. . Seriously, don't wait for Prince to get a clue (he only endorses safe artists anyway) and go discover great music yourself. Check out these just to get a peek at the rich musical landscape that's out there: tUnE-yArDs, St. Vincent, Mogwai, Todd Terje, The War On Drugs, Dirty Projectors, The Weeknd, SOHN, Blood Orange, Parquet Courts, Chromeo, Damon Albarn, Lorde, John Frusciante, Neneh Cherry, Warpaint, London Grammar, Chvrches, Kendrick Lamar, Poliça, The Civil Wars, James Blake,... © Bart Van Hemelen
